Hunter Goodman blasts 25th homer as Rockies nip Diamondbacks

Reuters2 days ago
August 16 - Hunter Goodman homered, Kyle Karros added two hits and scored once as the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 in Denver on Friday night.
Tanner Gordon (3-5) allowed three runs on five hits in five-plus innings and Victor Vodnik picked up his fifth save for Colorado, which snapped a four-game skid against Arizona.
Jake McCarthy had two hits for the D-backs, who lost for just the fourth time in the last 13 games.
Arizona entered Friday with a streak of 12 games in which it scored a run in the first three innings, but the Rockies were the ones who jumped ahead in the first inning. Goodman hit the first pitch he saw from Brandon Pfaadt in the seats in left-center field to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.
It was Goodman's team-leading 25th homer of the season.
The Rockies tacked on another run in the third when Ryan Ritter led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on Mickey Moniak's sacrifice fly.
Arizona tied it in the fourth. Corbin Carroll had a one-out single, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled and McCarthy singled to drive in Carroll. Gurriel scored on a groundout off the bat of Tyler Locklear to make it 2-2.
Colorado went back in front in the bottom of the inning when Karros scored on a groundout put in play by Yanquiel Fernandez.
Tyler Freeman led off the fifth with a triple and scored on a two-out double by Jordan Beck that put the Rockies ahead 4-2.
Pfaadt (12-8) got out of the frame without further damage. He allowed four runs on eight hits and walked two in six innings of work.
The Diamondbacks mounted a rally in the sixth. Ketel Marte led off with a single and Carroll walked, ending Gordon's night. Jimmy Herget got Gurriel to ground into a fielder's choice, moving Marte to third, and he scored on McCarthy's single but Carroll was thrown out at third to snuff out the rally.
Herget, Juan Mejia and Vodnik held the D-backs to one hit over the final four innings.

WNBA superstar Sophie Cunningham screams in pain and is carried off the court after suffering potentially serious injury

WNBA star Sophie Cunningham was taken to the locker room with a leg injury after wincing in pain on the court during Sunday's Indiana Fever game against the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham, who has been integral to the Fever this season, especially in Caitlin Clark 's absence, was standing under the basket and playing defense when a collision with Sun guard Bria Hartley occurred. Hartley attempted a pass around Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell, and collided with the lower leg of Cunningham, who stayed on the court in pain until team personnel helped her to her feet. As soon as Hartley made contact with Cunningham's lower right leg, the Fever standout immediately grabs it and falls to the court. When cameras focused back on Cunningham during a stoppage in play, she was visibly yelling in pain. The possible serious injury comes at a time when Cunningham's popularity has never been higher, after joining a roster and becoming close with Clark. Sophie Cunningham heads to the locker room after this Hartley pass and crash on her right leg. The three-time All-Star returned to Houston on Sunday after completing rehab work at the club's spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Fla. Alvarez, 28, is batting just .210 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 29 games this season. He last played in a game with the Astros on May 2. Gabriel denies ‘entertainers' jab was aimed at Browns teammate Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel has denied he was referring to his teammate Shedeur Sanders when he aimed a jab at 'entertainers' in the NFL. 'There's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on doing,' Gabriel told CBS from the sidelines during the Browns' preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. Gabriel completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards and an interception. Many on social media thought the comment was a reference to Sanders, the son of hall of famer Deion Sanders, who has received huge amounts of media attention since the Browns took him in the fifth round of this year's draft. The Browns picked Gabriel in the third round of the same draft and the duo are in a battle with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett to win the starter's job this season. Flacco is expected to start in Cleveland's opening game, but Sanders was impressive in his preseason debut last week before an oblique injury forced him to miss Saturday's game. 'I'm all about our team and each other,' Gabriel said after Saturday's game. 'I would never make that [comment about Sanders] and I've said it before that's why it's interesting, but for me I've explained it entertainers are you all, competitor, that's what I am, and all my teammates and we both have jobs to do, so that's it.'
