Mikel Arteta coy on Gyokeres, but says ‘a lot of time left' for transfers

SINGAPORE: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was reluctant to talk Monday about transfer target Viktor Gyokeres, but said there was 'a lot of time left in the window' to strengthen his squad.
'He's not part of our group yet,' Arteta told reporters in Singapore of Sporting Lisbon's Swedish striker ahead of pre-season friendlies against AC Milan and Newcastle United this week.
'And I don't have anything concrete to offer to any player who is not part of the group yet,' he added.
English Premier League Arsenal have so far signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and, most recently, Noni Madueke from Chelsea.
Arteta is still looking to beef up his attacking options, with Arsenal reportedly offering a deal worth £70 million ($94 million) for the prolific Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals in 52 games in Portugal last season.
'There's still a lot of time in the transfer window, and we are still seeking the numbers,' said Arteta
'We are short, and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad.
'But for now, I'm focusing on the players we already have, and I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far.'
Arteta is acutely aware that Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004 and that his squad need to go one better after finishing second in each of the past three seasons.
'I don't have to convince (the players) about winning the Premier League. I know how good they are, and we all want to take the next step,' said Arteta.
'Our job is to put ourselves in the best competitive position to achieve our goal. That's our individual responsibility,' he added.
The North London side will play AC Milan in Singapore on Wednesday, followed by a clash with fellow Premier League side Newcastle on Sunday.

Childhood fan Mbeumo joins Man Utd re-build

Bryan Mbeumo came through Troyes' academy before joining Brentford in 2019. Photo: AFP/File Cameroon winger Bryan Mbeumo said he "grew up wearing" the Manchester United shirt after joining the club from Brentford on a deal until 2030, with an option for a further year. Mbeumo, 25, will reportedly cost the 20-time Premier League champions an initial £65 million ($87 million) having scored 20 goals in 38 league games last season for the Bees. Tottenham, now managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, were also chasing the France-born attacker before United's improved offer sealed the move. United's third bid, worth an initial £65m with £6m in add-ons, was accepted last week. "As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams," Mbeumo said in a United statement. "The team whose shirt I wore growing up. "This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies," he added. United coach Ruben Amorim has signed two other players during this summer in an attempt to avoid a repeat of last season's catastrophic display. They lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final and a 15th-place finish in the top flight was their lowest since 1973-74. Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and teenage Paraguayan defender Diego Leon have also moved to Old Trafford. 'Primary target' Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled as Amorim's main strikers last term. "My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday," Mbeumo said. "I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players. Mbeumo blossomed in six years at Brentford, scoring 70 goals and providing 51 assists in 242 appearances in all competitions following his move from French club Troyes in 2019. "There is always a right time for a player to move on and, for Bryan, that time is now," Brentford director of football Phil Giles said. "He has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world, and we are very happy for him," he added. Mbeumo helped the Bees win promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and was instrumental in their impressive 10th-place finish in 2024-25. "We are delighted to have secured another one of our primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour," the Red Devils' director of football Jason Wilcox said. "The experience in the US will be the perfect opportunity for Bryan to work with Ruben and his new team-mates as we prepare for an exciting season ahead," he added. In terms of United outgoings, Marcus Rashford is set to leave his boyhood club for Barcelona and an announcement could come on Tuesday. Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia continue looking for new clubs and are not expected to fly to the US as part of the tour squad. United start their pre-season tour of the United States on Sunday by facing West Ham before their opening game of the new Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17.

Germans eye England revenge in potential Women's Euro final repeat

OBERENTFELDEN: Germany are plotting their path to a potential revenge mission against England at the Women's Euros, with former international Melanie Leupolz already dreaming of a rematch of the 2022 final after the Germans' agonising 2-1 extra-time defeat. First, both teams must navigate tricky semi-final hurdles, with England facing Italy on Tuesday before Germany take on reigning world champions and tournament favourites Spain a day later. 'It would be a good revenge, that would be amazing, so fingers crossed they win against Spain and make it to the final,' Leupolz said at an Adidas event in Zurich on Sunday. There was no shortage of drama in the quarter-finals, with England edging Sweden in a hair-raising penalty shootout, Italy scoring a last-minute winner against Norway, and Germany beating France on penalties to set up an intriguing pair of semis. 'I won't underestimate Italy, I think they are playing a good tournament, a lot of passion and just giving it all. So I think it will be very difficult for England as well,' Leupolz, who played for London club Chelsea for four years until 2024, said. 'I think they (England) had a few ups and downs during the tournament, some good performances, some not so good. So I think they have to have a good day on this day to win against Italy.' England beat Sweden in sensational penalty shoot-out to reach Women's Euro semis Germany recovered from an early red card and the concession of an early goal to draw 1-1 with France after extra time before going on to win 6-5 in the shootout to send them into the last four. 'Just fingers crossed for Germany. But I think after yesterday's game with so many challenges, I think they just take all of the confidence they got from yesterday and take it into the semi-finals against Spain.' Having gone from playing for the team to cheering them on from the sidelines, the 31-year-old Leupolz said that retirement had left her with mixed feelings. 'I already miss the 90 minutes of football for sure, but everything around the travelling, the trainings, everything you have to invest, I think I won't miss,' she explained. 'I think it was the right time, but when I see games like yesterday, just like really highlight games, the 90 minutes, I will miss for sure.'
