Brighton make Carlos Soler enquiry amid Villarreal talks

Yahoo2 days ago

Brighton and Hove Albion retain their interest in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler (28), however, Villarreal have made more concrete steps to sign the Spaniard, according to Marc Mechenoua.
Brighton's interest in Soler is long-standing and the player will be available this summer. West Ham United have opted against making his loan move to the club permanent, whilst there is no place for him at PSG. He, like the other returning loanees, will be shipped out of the Parc des Princes once again this summer.

A return to the Premier League could potentially be on the cards for the midfielder. Mechenoua understands that Brighton, who have previously shown an interest in the Spain international, have made an enquiry. However, a deal that would see him join Villarreal and return to his native Spain is more advanced. As per L'Équipe, talks with the La Liga side, who next season will play in the UEFA Champions League, are underway.

After conquering Europe, PSG now have sights set on Club World Cup glory

Paris Saint-Germain players step off their plane after arriving in Los Angeles on Tuesday ahead of the Club World Cup (Frederic J. Brown) Freshly crowned kings of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain arrived this week in the United States for the Club World Cup and are treating FIFA's lucrative new competition not as a nuisance at the end of an exhausting season but as a serious objective. "I think it is an incredible competition," PSG coach Luis Enrique said of the Club World Cup in the immediate aftermath of his team's UEFA Champions League triumph in Munich two weeks ago. Advertisement "Our aim is to be competitive and try to win a fifth trophy of the season." The Qatar-backed French giants could be forgiven for wanting some time to bask in the glory of their 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich which allowed them to finally win the Champions League for the first time in their history. There had been numerous agonising failures in Europe's elite club competition, as well as billions of euros spent on transfer fees on stars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, prior to captain Marquinhos raising the trophy aloft. "We have made history for the club, for the city and for the whole country," defender Lucas Hernandez told sports daily L'Equipe after the PSG squad paraded their trophy down the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, attended a reception with President Emmanuel Macron and celebrated with almost 50,000 fans at their Parc des Princes stadium. Advertisement PSG have played 58 matches since last August and also swept all the available domestic trophies in France this season, as has become the norm in recent years. - No time to stop - But there is simply no time to stop and reflect. Many of their players, including Champions League final hero Desire Doue, spent last week on international duty before returning to their club and departing for Los Angeles, where they will begin their Club World Cup adventure this weekend. "The tournament itself is a really attractive prospect," Luis Enrique told "We have to strike the balance between managing the physical and mental fatigue we're experiencing now at the end of a long season and harnessing the motivation that comes with being involved in the competition." Advertisement PSG's opening game will be against another European heavyweight as they take on Antoine Griezmann's Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, just outside Los Angeles, on Sunday. They will then also face South American champions Botafogo, of Brazil, before moving north to take on Seattle Sounders in their remaining Group B matches. Expected to qualify for the knockout phase without too many issues, PSG could end up playing a total of seven matches if they make it all the way to the final in New York on July 13 -- just a month before their scheduled first game of next season in the UEFA Supercup against Tottenham Hotspur. The strain of such a long campaign is telling, with Ousmane Dembele -- their top scorer this season with 33 goals -- struggling with an injury picked up playing for France last week. Advertisement They did not manage to add any new players to their squad during the brief transfer window that opened at the start of this month ahead of the tournament -- reported interest in Bournemouth's Ukrainian defender Illia Zabarnyi did not turn into anything concrete. But the rewards for success in the Club World Cup are enticing and should be enough to keep Luis Enrique's squad focused on their objective, with up to a stunning $125 million in prize money on offer for the best performing European team if they manage to go all the way. bap-as/ea

Diego Simeone reveals title plan ahead of Club World Cup campaign

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has fired a fresh message at his squad ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. Los Rojoblancos finished the La Liga season in the familiar setting of third place behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. Advertisement Simeone's charges did confirm their place in the UEFA Champions League qualification spots with La Liga now up to five places. Atletico Madrid have finished in the top three in 12 of Simeone's 13 full seasons in charge starting from 2012/13 with two titles won. However, the most common pattern has been for Simeone to land in third spot, in behind El Clasico rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid: Third place record From 2012/13, third place has been Simeone's most regular finishing place, ending up there eight times, including in 2024/25. Photo by AP / LaPresse / Diario Sport Despite his impressive haul of trophies in Madrid, 2024/25 reverted to type, as Real Madrid and Barcelona battled for the title – and Simeone's charges failed to keep pace. Advertisement Hansi Flick sealed the title, in his debut season in charge, as part of a Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup treble. Simeone's Atletico Madrid mission Ahead of the incoming Club World Cup, Simeone claimed there is a chance for change, and called on his players to gasp the opportunity. 'I constantly tell the players it isn't about winning a league. We're leaving a legacy here at the club. We want more, it's no longer enough to finish third,' as per quotes from Marca. 'The picture I'm missing is at Atletico Madrid is winning the Champions League, without a doubt. There's no point in hiding that.' Simeone also reiterated his pledge of wanting to win the Club World Cup with his side kicking off their campaign up against the newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain on June 15 in Pasadena.

FIFA legends Marcelo, Kaká celebrate 1-year countdown to the 2026 World Cup

To celebrate the one-year out mark from the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FOX is hosting a star-studded event in Miami. It's a look ahead to what's to come as North America prepares to host the greatest international soccer tournament. In attendance at the event were a host of FIFA legends and greats. Brazil's Marcelo and Kaka joined the festivities, as well as Italy's Alessandro Del Piero and Portugal's Pepe. During the party, Kaka was reunited with the World Cup trophy he won with Brazil in 2002, bringing onto the main stage. As FOX Sports analyst Stu Holden noted, only players who have won the trophy are allowed to handle it. Many other celebrities and icons of soccer took to Miami to enjoy the exciting festivities, which included a musical performance by country superstar Shaboozey. Kaka and Del Piero reminisced on their experiences of playing in the FIFA World Cup. Kaka helped Brazil win the trophy in 2002, while Del Piero lifted Italy to a World Cup victory in 2006. Portugese legend Pepe was also in attendance on Friday night. While he hasn't won a World Cup, he won three UEFA Champions League trophies with Real Madrid. Marcelo, who was teammates with Pepe at Real Madrid, and won five UEFA Champions League trophies, showed up basking in swagger. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
