Express Tribune02-05-2025

In a high-octane fusion of film and motorsport, IWC Schaffhausen celebrated its partnership with the upcoming F1 movie during the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
The exclusive event featured Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team Principal Toto Wolff and driver George Russell, alongside Hollywood powerhouses including producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Kerry Condon and Simone Ashley.
The collaboration marked a unique crossover as real Formula 1 met its cinematic counterpart. The film, which stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, was shot over two years at actual Formula 1 Grands Prix™, providing fans with an unprecedented level of realism. Mercedes driver George Russell spoke about the surreal moment of sharing a podium with Brad Pitt and his excitement heading into the Miami Grand Prix.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actresses Kerry Condon and Simone Ashley expressed their thrill at shooting during live F1 races, emphasizing the film's commitment to authenticity. Toto Wolff echoed this, calling the movie a true representation of the sport's spirit and adrenaline.
IWC Schaffhausen, a long-time Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS partner, also sponsors APXGP, the fictional 11th team featured in the film. As part of the project, IWC designed an exclusive APXGP watch collection, worn on-screen by Brad Pitt's character Sonny Hayes and other cast members. The Ingenieur Automatic 40 with its striking green dial is the star of the collection and was showcased at the event.
The celebration not only highlighted the synergy between Hollywood and Formula 1 but also positioned the F1 movie as one of the most authentic motorsport films ever produced.

Mercedes-Benz proposes tariff offset system with US, Spiegel reports

BERLIN: Mercedes-Benz has proposed a deal under which U.S. cars could be imported into Europe duty free in exchange for tariff waivers on the same number of vehicles that EU automakers export to the U.S., the company's CEO said in a German magazine interview. 'For every car that leaves the USA or Europe, a car from the other side comes in duty free,' Ola Kaellenius told Spiegel. 'We have put this idea to both sides and it is a possible component of the negotiations between the USA and the EU.' Such a deal could act as a precedent for other industries, Kaellenius added. Mercedes-Benz, and German rivals BMW and Volkswagen, are in talks with Washington over a possible import tariff deal, sources told Reuters last month. In a separate interview with the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper also published Thursday, Kaellenius said Mercedes-Benz was available as a 'sounding board' for - and to contribute ideas to - EU and U.S. trade talks. Mercedes signs deal with Luminar to develop latest lidar sensors 'As a company, we hold talks with political decision-makers – in the EU as well as in China and the U.S.,' said Kaellenius. 'However, negotiations take place at EU level because trade policy falls within the EU's remit. We are available as a sounding board, contributing ideas and presenting scenarios showing how certain decisions would affect us,' he added. Kaellenius' interviews were published hours before Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, holds his first face-to-face talks with U.S. President Donald Trump as Europe seeks to stave off looming U.S. tariffs.

Piastri triumphs in Spain with McLaren one-two

McLaren's Oscar Piastri celebrates on the podium after winning the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmelo. PHOTO: AFP Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri won the Spanish Grand Prix from pole position in a McLaren one-two on Sunday to forge 10 points clear of teammate Lando Norris in the title battle. The Australian's win, by 2.4 seconds, was his fifth in nine races this season and McLaren's seventh. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium after passing Max Verstappen's Red Bull six laps from the end following a safety car period that triggered the main talking point of the afternoon with the champion demoted from fifth to 10th. "It's a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend," said Piastri, who finished third last weekend in a race won from pole by Norris. Verstappen, who made four stops in total and ended up on the slower hard tyres against rivals on softs, collided with Leclerc and twice with Mercedes' George Russell after the safety car restart. The angry Dutch driver was given a 10-second penalty added to his overall time for the second Russell collision that was clearly his fault. He and Leclerc also faced a post-race investigation for their clash that could lead to further sanctions. "I tried to push him to the left, there was a bit of contact but fortunately no consequences," said Leclerc. Verstappen claimed the Monegasque had rammed into him and should have given back the place. Russell finished fourth after eventually being let through by Verstappen, who reluctantly did as his team told him. Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg finished a surprising and morale-boosting fifth for the future Audi team after passing Ferrari's seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap. Hamilton was a disappointing sixth, Isack Hadjar seventh for Racing Bulls and Pierre Gasly eighth for Renault-owned Alpine. First points Home hero Fernando Alonso scored his first points of the season with Aston Martin, who had only one car on the grid due to Lance Stroll's withdrawal through injury after Saturday's qualifying. Piastri led away cleanly at the start with Verstappen seizing second from Norris while Hamilton and Leclerc moved up to fourth and fifth as Russell lost out.

Piastri stays on top in Spanish GP practice

McLaren's Oscar Piastri is three points ahead of teammate Lando Norris in the standings. PHOTO: AFP Championship leader Oscar Piastri topped the times again ahead of title rival and McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in Saturday's third and final free practice ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Australian clocked a best lap in one minute and 12.387 seconds to outpace Norris, who is three points behind him in the drivers' championship, by 0.526 seconds. Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari, seven-tenths off the pace, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Racing Bulls' impressive rookie Isack Hadjar. Kimi Antonelli was seventh in the second Mercedes ahead of two-time champion and local hero Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari and Liam Lawson in the second Racing Bull. Piastri will on Sunday seek not only to increase his lead in the title race, but also claim an eighth consecutive podium for McLaren, a feat achieved previously by only two drivers – Hamilton and three-time champion Ayrton Senna. The session began in hot and dry conditions with Alpine new boy Franco Colapinto leading the way soon followed by home favourite Alonso, greeted by a loud cheer from a big Saturday crowd basking in the sunshine. In a slow start, Lance Stroll and Gabriel Bortoleto joined in, but after 12 minutes only Bortoleto and Colapinto had set times. The true action did not begin until the half-hour mark with Sainz clocking 1:14.124 followed by Leclerc and Hamilton taking over before Norris and Russell trimmed the top spot lap to 1:13.396. Emerging last, Antonelli promptly endorsed the impression that Mercedes, like Ferrari, had found time overnight by going second on his first timed lap. Russell was four-tenths clear. With only 17 minutes remaining, only six cars were on track as teams conserved tyres at a high-degradation circuit. It offered little entertainment for the fans before Verstappen, after set-up changes, went top in 1:13.375. On their second runs, McLaren lifted the bar with Piastri clocking 1:12.387, a second faster than McLaren. Norris went second, 0.526 adrift and Leclerc third. Unexpectedly, the range of times from first to 10th was 1.4 seconds.
