Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering Infrastructure Ltd has been fined Rs 94.68 crore for illegal excavation of minor minerals during road construction in Maharashtra's Jalna district, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule informed the legislative assembly on Friday. The violations occurred along the Shegaon and Pandharpur pilgrimage routes, prompting multiple penalty orders - Rs 38.70 crore by the additional district collector of Jalna and Rs 55.98 crore by the Partur tehsildar.advertisementThe issue was raised by BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar during the session.
To secure the release of its seized machinery, Megha Engineering deposited Rs 17.28 lakh, amounting to one percent of one of the fines, while simultaneously challenging the orders. However, the additional revenue divisional commissioner in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar rejected the appeal.Minister Bawankule also revealed that seven additional cases are pending against the company, suggesting sustained regulatory scrutiny. This development adds to the company's mounting legal troubles. Trump's 50% pain, India's 100% gain

The paradox of power is that it burns the hands of those who mistake a mandate for a flaming sword. When a democratically elected leader like Donald Trump wields his mandate not as a trust but as a cudgel, slamming down sweeping tariffs to prop up the shimmering illusion of his 'America First' mirage, he does more than rattle rivals; he risks setting fire to the very foundations of his perverse economic dreamscape. Trump's terrible tariffs are a thunderbolt aimed at India's economic heart. Pharmaceuticals ($12.2 billion), textiles ($8 billion), electronics, and automobiles—key pillars of India's $74-billion US exports—face a 50 percent levy, potentially shaving more than 0.50 percent off the GDP, according to various estimates. The rupee, teetering at 87.95 to the dollar, amplifies the pain for India's 400-million-strong middle class, whose purchasing power drives 50 percent of consumption. Yet, in this storm lies India's chance to reshape its destiny with audacious reforms that ignite demand, attract investment, and rival China's manufacturing might. It requires a major reversal of economic model which places emphasis on supply. In fact, excessive supply hasn't been able to create demand proportionally. To spur demand, India's middle class, burdened by a 30-40 percent income tax on earnings above Rs 15 lakh, needs urgent relief. Cutting the rate to 15 percent for incomes under Rs 15 lakh would lift disposable income by 12-15 percent, unlocking $50 billion in fresh consumption, according to Niti Aayog's 2024 estimate. In rural India—where consumption grew just 4.5 percent in 2024 versus 6.2 percent in cities—direct cash transfers are essential. Expanding the Rs 2 lakh crore PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana to provide Rs 5,000 a month to 100 million rural families could drive a 10 percent surge in rural demand, adding 0.5 percent to GDP. Such a bottom-up strategy would replace the failed trickle-down approach, which has poured Rs 1.45 lakh crore into corporate tax cuts since 2019 with little to show for it in jobs.

Deputy CM Pravati Parida tied a 'Subhadra rakhi' on Majhi's wrist to mark Rakshabandhan. "Subhadra Yojana has successfully created a new chapter of progress and transformation in the lives of many women. It not only strengthened their families economically but also empowered them to become entrepreneurs," said Majhi. On the occasion, the CM also laid the foundation stone for 436 projects worth over Rs 452 crore and inaugurated 126 projects worth Rs 309.42 crore for Koraput district. These included important infrastructure projects in education, health, bridges, roads and tourism. "Once implemented, these projects will further accelerate the development of the district," Majhi said. Techno Mag Learn More Undo Describing Subhadra Yojana as a ray of hope for mothers who are forced to give up on their dreams due to financial constraints, the CM said, "The govt's goal is to empower all such women to become self-reliant and contribute to building a self-reliant India." Through the govt's dedicated efforts, women in Kotia panchayat were also successfully linked with Subhadra Yojana. Out of 2,078 applications from Kotia, 1,797, 1,795 and 1,783 beneficiaries received the first, second and third instalments, respectively. Parida said the govt's aim is to empower all women to become self-reliant. "No eligible woman will be left behind, whether she lives in the heart of Bhubaneswar or near the remote borders of Kotia," she added. The Subhadra portal reopened from Saturday for fresh applications. Women who achieved success through the scheme and those who contributed significantly to its implementation were also felicitated. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Subhadra Yojana for the empowerment of women on Sept 17 last year, his birthday, in Bhubaneswar. The scheme promises financial aid of Rs 50,000 to eligible women over a period of five years, with two instalments of Rs 5,000 every year being directly transferred to their bank accounts. State govt had announced that the two instalments will be released on International Women's Day on March 8 and on Rakshabandhan every year.
