JNUSU Election Results: Left Wins 3 Key Posts, ABVP Ends 9-Year Drought
Left candidates bagged three of the four central panel posts in the JNUSU election to maintain their foothold in the premier university while the RSS-affiliated ABVP ended a nine-year phase out of office to win the post of joint secretary.
According to the results announced by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) election commission early on Monday, Nitish Kumar of the All India Students' Association (AISA) secured 1,702 votes to win the post of president.
His closest competitor -- Shikha Swaraj of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) -- secured 1,430 votes while Students' Federation of India (SFI)-supported Tayabba Ahmed polled 918 votes.
Manisha of the Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) won the post of vice-president by securing 1,150 votes, ahead of the ABVP's Nittu Goutham who polled 1,116 votes.
The DSF also bagged the general secretary's post, with Munteha Fatima polling 1,520 votes, ahead of the ABVP's Kunal Rai who secured 1,406 votes.
The ABVP clinched the post of joint secretary, with Vaibhav Meena polling 1,518 votes, ahead of AISA's Naresh Kumar (1,433 votes) and Progressive Students' Association (PSA) candidate Nigam Kumari (1,256 votes).
Meena's win marked the first time the ABVP has bagged a central panel post since Saurav Sharma's victory on the same post in 2015-16. The last time the ABVP won the post of president was in 2000-01 when Sandeep Mahapatra had emerged victorious.
This year's election saw a split in the Left alliance, with the AISA and the DSF contesting as one bloc while the SFI and the All India Students' Federation (AISF) formed a coalition with the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) and the PSA.
The ABVP contested the election independently.
Hailing the victory of its alliance on three central panel posts, AISA also raised concern over the ABVP's narrow win for the post of joint secretary and called it a challenge to the Left's dominance on campus.
"It is indeed a matter of concern that the ABVP has won the post of joint secretary with a margin of 85 votes. Despite this structural assault and corruption of the admission process to ensure BJP loyalists in faculty positions act as a ticket for the ruling regime on campus, the Left has returned to its leadership position in the JNUSU," AISA said in a statement.
It called the alliance's victory a mandate against the government's New Education Policy which, it said, undermined public-funded education and discriminated against marginalised groups.
In contrast, the ABVP called its victory "a historic shift in JNU's political landscape" and said it broke the Left's "so-called red fortress".
"This victory in JNU is not only proof of the ABVP's proactive hard work and students' faith and commitment to nationalist thinking but it is also a victory for all students who consider education as the foundation for nation-rebuilding. This is a democratic revolution against the so-called ideological tyranny established by the Left for years in JNU," the ABVP said in a statement.
Meena, the newly-elected joint secretary, said, "I am not at all considering this victory as my personal achievement or gain but it's a massive and fascinating victory of tribal consciousness and the nationalist ideology, which has been suppressed by the Left for years." "This success is an embodiment of students who want to advance in education by wholeheartedly upholding cultural identity and the spirit of nation re-building," he added.
The polls, held on April 25, witnessed about 5,500 of the 7,906 eligible students casting their votes.
While the turnout was slightly lower than the 73 per cent recorded in 2023, it was among the highest since 2012.
Twenty-nine candidates were in the fray for the four central panel posts and 200 for the 44 councillor seats.
In the March 2024 polls, held after a four-year gap following the outbreak of Covid, the United Left won three of the four central panel posts while BAPSA -- which had contested independently -- secured one.

Catholic priest's presence at RSS event in Pala raises eyebrows
At a time when the Catholic Church in Kerala has been voicing concern over attacks on Christians in central and northern States of India, the participation of a priest from the Pala diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church at an event of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has raised a few eyebrows. Father George Nellikunnu Cherivu Purayidom, director of Care Homes project under the Pala diocese and Deepika Friends Club, presided over Shankholi 2025, a student summit jointly organised by the Poonjar, Meenachil and Ramapuram units of the RSS on August 15. Addressing the gathering, Father Purayidom said that it was the generation inspired by India's spiritual heritage and the freedom struggle that went on to shape modern India. Today's younger generation must strive to project the nation's glory on the world stage, making effective use of organisation and technology. The keynote address at the summit was delivered by Desheeya Adhyapaka Parishat State vice-president Jigi Mash. However, the event has already raised a few eyebrows within the Catholic Church, especially in the wake of recent attacks on nuns and priests from Kerala in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, allegedly by Sangh Parivar activists. 'This only reflects how sections of the Catholic clergy remain insensitive to the sufferings of their fellow believers in BJP-ruled states,' observed another priest, reacting to the priest's presence. The instance has also triggered debates on social media and within the Catholic community. When contacted, Fr. Purayidom clarified that he had attended the event with the knowledge of Pala Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt. 'I decided to attend since the programme was related to Independence Day. I went there on the organisers' invitation and delivered a speech on the theme of the event. There is no need to misconstrue this in any other way,' he explained. Commenting on the issue, Fr. Jhoseph Thadathil, Vicar General of the diocese, maintained that the priest must have attended the event in his personal capacity. 'The diocese, as a matter of principle, does not interfere in the affairs of any political organisation, nor does it extend support to any. The diocese has nothing to do with the event, even if the said priest attended it,' he clarified.

Owaisi criticises UAPA misuse after acquittal of eight accused linked to SIMI
Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi criticised the misuse of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against the backdrop of the acquittal of eight men who were accused of having links with the banned outfit of the Students Islamic Movement of India. Interacting with the media at the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party headquarters in Darussalaam, Mr Owaisi recalled that when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had amended the law, he had opposed it in the Parliament. He recollected warning the then government that the law would disproportionately affect Muslims and dalits. 'Eighteen years later, the court acquitted them. Their youth has been stolen. Who will answer for this?' he asked. Drawing a parallel with recent political developments, Mr Owaisi referenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks on voter data fudging, which he described as vote chori (vote theft). 'They are saying chori, chori. But what about these men whose lives have been taken away in the name of justice?' he asked. Referring to a recent Supreme Court order on stray dogs that triggered a debate, Mr Owaisi questioned the silence around those who remain incarcerated under the UAPA provisions. 'I do not understand how those who have spent six years in jail without bail continue to be ignored,' he said. Mr Owaisi clarified that he respects the judiciary but also expressed grave concern that the some of the undertrials have up served sentences prescribed under the very sections of laws invoked against them. The Hyderabad MP also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day for the second time in which he praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Mr Owaisi accused the organisation of playing no role in the freedom struggle, calling its literature objectionable. He made a specific reference to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, an RSS leader who served as a minister in the Bengal cabinet under Fazl-ul-Haq in 1941. 'In March 1940, Fazl-ul-Haq supported the Pakistan resolution moved by the Muslim League,' he said. Criticising the narrative around Partition, Mr Owaisi argued that the voting rights of Muslims at that time were severely restricted. 'Hardly 2% or 3% of Muslims had the right to vote. These were elite, who had right to vote which was conditional,' he said, adding that a vast majority of Muslims could not vote. Touching upon the political climate in Bihar, Mr Owaisi said that his party leaders are already active on the ground working towards the upcoming polls, including those of local bodies, and then the assembly elections. He said that he would campaign in that State soon.
