Packers LB Ty'Ron Hopper showing 'ton of improvement' to start Year 2
Among the most improved players at Green Bay Packers training camp in 2025 is second-year linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper, who is more comfortable in the defense and better showcasing his athleticism and physicality at linebacker and on special teams this summer. "Hop's done a really nice job," coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. "He's shown a ton of improvement really in every facet of his game, on defense, on we-fense (what the Packers call special teams). Certainly, we always knew he was going to be a physical presence, you could see that going back to his college tape. He's got a better understanding of what is required of him for that position, he's got a great understanding of our defense and he's gone out there and put together a lot of solid performances." Hopper, a third-round pick in 2024, has played 74 preseason snaps and is the team's second-highest graded defensive player at Pro Football Focus. Through two games, Hooper has 10 total tackles, zero missed tackles and a team-high four "stops," or a tackle creating an offensive failure, and he's allowed only one catch in coverage. Among all NFL linebackers with at least 60 snaps played this preseason, Hopper's PFF grade of 86.0 ranks third overall. His 13 special teams snaps have included only four snaps covering punts or kicks, so the opportunities to make impact plays for the third phase have been limited. Against the Colts, Hopper made a standout play when he beat a block at the line of scrimmage and chased down the running back for a loss. Hopper was in on three stops against the run in the preseason opener. The Packers have Quay Walker, Edgerrin Cooper and Isaiah McDuffie locked in as the top three linebackers in Jeff Hafley's 4-3 base defense, but Hopper has made a strong case for being the No. 4 option despite the addition of veteran Isaiah Simmons, who has struggled in preseason games. As a rookie, Hopper played only 18 snaps on defense across three games. Like most young players, he needed a development year, and he's now beginning the jump as a second-year player. Green Bay Packers Weapon May be NFL's Unluckiest Player
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Green Bay Packers are rife with talent on the offensive side of the ball, which should make for a very interesting battle in the NFC North. We know the Packers are loaded with wide receivers, but they also have a very compelling backfield led by Josh Jacobs and with young pieces like Emanuel Wilson and MarShawn Lloyd. But in the case of the latter, staying on the field has been a trying exercise. More news: Panthers QB Bryce Young is Already Making People Worried Green Bay selected Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft and had high hopes for him heading into his rookie campaign, but he played in just one game due to a variety of medical issues. He mostly dealt with hamstring injuries, but when he was finally ready to return late in the year, he fell victim to appendicitis. Well, now, Lloyd is injured again. The 24-year-old suffered another hamstring injury during the Packers' preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts this past Saturday, and his status for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions is up in the air as a result. Lloyd just can't seem to catch a break, and Green Bay running backs coach Ben Sirmans went as far to say that Lloyd may be the unluckiest player that he has ever seen. "It's just, for whatever reason, just unfortunate occurrences for him," Sirmans said, via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. "To be honest, I have not, and I don't think any of us have, or very few of us have (coached a player as unlucky as Lloyd) ... you've just got to believe that at some point, he will get past all this and be fine." A detailed view of a Green Bay Packers helmet during an OTA practice session at Don Hutson Center on May 31, 2023 in Ashwaubenon, at what point do the Packers run out of patience? Green Bay's rushing attack should be fine. Jacobs is a star, and Wilson flashed considerable promise last season. Even Chris Brooks is an intriguing candidate. But the Packers were definitely hoping to see some progression from Lloyd in 2025, especially after such a strong final collegiate campaign at USC. More news: Steelers' Mike Tomlin Explains Why Aaron Rodgers is 'Contagious' Lloyd rushed for 820 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a hefty 7.1 yards per carry with the Trojans in 2023. He actually began his NCAA career at South Carolina in 2021 and spent two seasons with the Gamecocks before transferring to USC. The Wilmington, De. native definitely has talent, but if he isn't able to actually play in the games, that talent isn't going to mean all that much. Hopefully, Lloyd is able to shake off this latest injury and return in full force for the regular season. For more on the Packers and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
