Russian strikes kill three in Ukraine's Kharkiv ahead of key White House talks

KYIV: Russian drone strikes killed three people, including a child, and injured 18 others in Ukraine's Kharkiv region overnight. Kharkiv police confirmed the casualties in a Telegram post, warning that victims might still be trapped under the rubble of a damaged five-storey apartment block. The city near the Russian border had already suffered a ballistic missile strike hours earlier that wounded at least 11 people, according to Mayor Igor Terekhov. Russian forces also attacked Ukraine's Sumy region early Monday, injuring a 57-year-old woman and a 43-year-old driver with a bomb and subsequent drone strike. Regional military chief Oleg Grygorov provided details of the Sumy assault, which occurred near the volatile border area. These attacks coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's planned Washington visit for critical talks with European allies about ending the war. US President Donald Trump stated ahead of the meetings that Ukraine regaining Crimea or joining NATO would not be considered as options. Zelensky has consistently rejected pressure to surrender territories currently under Russian control, which account for approximately 20% of Ukraine's land. Russian forces have recently advanced in eastern Ukraine while proposing Kyiv relinquish Donbas in exchange for freezing frontline positions near Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The strategic Black Sea port cities remain under Ukrainian control despite Moscow's territorial demands. – AFP

Jannie urges deeper probe into Keningau trafficking case

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Kapayan assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang ( pic ) said the recent human trafficking case in Keningau involving four girls, including minors, is a betrayal of the dignity and future of children. She said the police's swift action in rescuing the victims and placing them in protective shelters was commendable, but investigations must go deeper to uncover the masterminds behind the exploitation. In a statement on Monday, she said those who purchase sex from minors should be treated as perpetrators of statutory rape, and premises that enable such crimes must also be held accountable. She added that a holistic approach is needed, one that not only punishes perpetrators but also ensures survivors are given long-term care, education, psychological support and pathways to rebuild their lives without stigma. Jannie said this case is a stark reminder that trafficking thrives because of demand and organised networks, and urged the authorities to dismantle the entire machinery by bringing both the masterminds and buyers to justice. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
