Kelly Clarkson Beaten To No. 1 By 2025's Breakout Music Star

Kelly Clarkson had been teasing new music somewhat indirectly for much of 2025. The singer doesn't drop new tunes as frequently as she once did, as her focus these days is on her eponymous daytime talk show. Whenever she does share something new, though, her legion of followers — both those who have been with her for decades and countless daily viewers — rush not just to hear the track, but buy it.
The Grammy and Emmy winner nearly nabs a new champion this week on the Billboard charts but misses out, coming in behind one of the hottest rising stars in the music industry.
Clarkson launches her new single, 'Where Have You Been,' at No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart, Billboard's ranking of the bestselling tunes across the U.S. Luminate reports that in its first tracking period of availability, Clarkson's latest sold a little more than 5,500 copies. That's a fairly small sum for the second-bestselling release in the nation, but this May has turned out to be a relatively quiet period in terms of major new releases — especially when looking strictly at pure purchases.
Clarkson is beaten only by 'Ordinary' by Alex Warren. That breakout track, which is quickly turning the singer-songwriter into one of the most exciting new names in the business, remains at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart. The tune has led the tally for three of the 10 frames it has spent on the ranking.
Warren beats Clarkson by fewer than 1,000 purchases, as 'Ordinary' sold another 6,400 copies last frame. That sum is down more than 10% from the period before, but it's still larger than any other cut managed during the same period.
'Where Have You Been' marks Clarkson's first new single as a lead artist — excluding holiday fare — in about a year. In the spring of 2024, she shifted focus to tracks from her most recent album Chemistry, which arrived in the summer of 2023. That set produced a handful of singles, although none of them became big wins in the U.S.
As 'Where Have You Been' arrives, Clarkson earns her milestone fifteenth top 10 on the Digital Song Sales chart. That list includes a trio of rulers, as she's led the charge with 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You),' 'My Life Would Suck Without You,' and, most recently, 'Piece by Piece.' Looking at the full list — which used to run longer than the 25 spots it includes these days — the American Idol winner has sent 43 different tunes to the competitive roster.

Bob Dylan, 83, Sends Hilarious 80th Birthday Message to Fellow Rock Legend

When iconic guitarist for The Who, Pete Townshend, turned 83 this week, there was another legendary rocker waiting to welcome him to his ninth decade on the planet: 83-year-old Bob Dylan. Dylan took to X to wish his fellow Grammy winner a happy birthday on Monday, May 19, writing, "Happy birthday Pete. Who's the new boss? Is he like the old boss? Have you met him yet? Say hello to Roger.' As fans the world over know, Dylan's message was a witty reference to the iconic Who song 'Won't Get Fooled Again" — written by Townshend — which features Roger Daltrey singing the lyrics, 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.' Music lovers knew exactly what Dylan was talking about, with one person quoting "The Seeker," a song by The Who that name-checks the "Like a Rolling Stone" singer: "I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles, I asked Timothy Leary, but he could not help me either." Another fan shared a pic of Townshend and Dylan posing from what appeared to be the '80s writing: "Fashion icons." Townshend and Dylan have praised each other's talents over the years, with Townshend even crediting Dylan for helping to inspire the classic Who song "My Generation." '(He) definitely created a new style of writing," Townshend said, per Far Out Magazine. "Dylan was the one who I think got the message across to The Beatles. (That) was that you can write songs about subjects other than falling in love.'

‘Wicked' Star Cynthia Erivo Fires Back at MAGA Hate for Playing Jesus

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has some thoughts about the MAGA outrage—fueled by Elon Musk—over her casting as Christ in the Hollywood Bowl's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. 'You can't please everyone,' the Tony, Grammy, and Emmy-winner told Billboard in a new interview. 'It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, 'Oh, it's a musical, the gayest place on Earth.'' The show will run August 1-3. Many MAGA fans slammed Erivo's Christ casting as 'blasphemy' on social media when her role was first announced in February. What seemed lost on several critics was the tone of the show itself. The 1971 Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera has always been a provocative, at-times critical take on Christ's life, that over time became a cult favorite among queer audiences. Musk seemed to have missed that bit of information as well as he chimed in on X with an eyebrow-raised emoji in reply to an X user who wrote, 'Imagine doing this to any other religion' next to Erivo's casting news. Critics with similar complaints flooded Variety's social media post announcing the casting with one user in the replies called Erivo playing Christ 'anti-Christian bigotry' by 'Hollywood.' But Erivo told Billboard, 'Why not?' as she shrugged off naysayers. 'The more yourself you are, the more you are in front of people who don't necessarily understand, the better understanding starts to happen,' she said. As much as she wants to be 'a person you can get positive things from' since 'that is the only way you can balance this stuff,' she couldn't help getting in a jab at Donald Trump for his takeover of the Kennedy Center, where Erivo played some of the most iconic performances of her career. 'I don't know who gains what from that. I hope that it comes back,' she said. 'It's really sad to have to watch this happen to it. The Kennedy Center is supposed to be a space of creativity and art and music for everyone.' That said, assimilating to appease Trump and his 'anti-woke' mob isn't on the star's to-do list, she added. 'I want to encourage people to not decide to just tuck away and start hiding and not being themselves anymore,' she said, 'because that is exactly what they want.'

Cynthia Erivo Responds to Backlash Over Her Jesus Casting in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar' Musical

Cynthia Erivo has responded to the backlash she received for her upcoming lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl. After it was announced earlier this year that the Wicked star would be playing Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical, some conservatives were quick to criticize her for taking the role as a Black queer woman. However, during a recent interview with Billboard, Erivo couldn't help but laugh at the negative response. 'You can't please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, 'Oh, it's a musical, the gayest place on Earth.'' The actress will take to the stage at the famed Hollywood venue from Aug. 1-3, alongside Adam Lambert, who is set to play Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. The musical is a rock opera that follows the final days of Jesus Christ, leading up to his crucifixion, seen through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas. The musical was initially a concept album before making its Broadway debut in 1971. It has also received several revivals over the years, as well as a film adaptation, directed by Norman Jewison, in 1973. Erivo, who won a Tony for her performance in Broadway's The Color Purple, has previously played Mary Magdalene in Morgan James' all-female version of the musical's concept album.
