Arun Nehru demands cold storage at Musiri to help banana farmers
The Musiri-Kulithalai belt in Tiruchi and Karur districts, falling under Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency, is a major banana-growing region in Tamil Nadu.
'The belt encompassing Musiri, Thotttiyam, and Kulithalai, situated on the fertile banks of the Cauvery, is one of the largest banana-producing hubs in the State. Our farmers cultivate several important varieties such as poovan, rasthali, and nendran, which are supplied across the country, and form the backbone of the local agricultural economy. The region lacks modern cold storage infrastructure,' Mr. Arun Nehru said while raising the issue in Lok Sabha recently.
Pointing out that banana was a highly perishable fruit, Mr. Nehru said without adequate cold storage, farmers were frequently forced to sell the produce at throwaway prices. This caused significant financial loss and negated the farmers' year-long hard work, the MP said.
The presence of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's National Research Centre for Banana in Tiruchi underscores the strategic importance of the crop in the region, he said and urged the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to sanction a 'large-scale, modern cold storage facility in Musiri.' This would empower farmers by reducing post-harvest wastage and significantly boost the rural economy, he added.

Chennai: The time has come for states to reclaim federal rights constitutionally, said chief minister M K Stalin , accusing the Union govt of snatching the powers of states in key sectors, including education and health. Delivering his Independence Day address after hoisting the tricolour at Fort St George on Friday, Stalin said that at a time when states working closely with people need more funds and autonomy, the Union govt was doing the opposite by snatching away powers. "State govts are forced to depend on the Union govt due to the discrimination in devolution of funds, policies, and court judgments," he said. Besides, two driving academies in every zone and a state-level driving academy will be set up. The govt will also impart a skill training programme at a cost of ₹15crore for the benefit of college-going children of construction workers who are registered members of the welfare board, he said. The monthly aid for ex-servicemen from the state who served during World War II would be increased to ₹15,000, he said. Minister sounds alert over 18 dilapidated crest gates at Tungabhadra Reservoir
Koppal: The minister in charge of Koppal district, Shivaraj Tangadagi, has sounded a word of caution, saying that 18 out of the 33 crest gates at are in critical condition, with six of these impeding the flow of water into the river. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a media briefing, following Friday's Independence Day celebrations here, Tangadagi said the dam safety committee's evaluation has revealed that 18 crest gates need to be replaced immediately, apart from one other gate that was lost earlier. However, the company that was given the tender for repair and replacement work said the process would take a minimum of eight months. "The dam safety committee conducted a thorough inspection of all the 33 crest gates of the 72-year-old Tungabhadra Dam and assessed their capacity. According to their report, 18 gates are almost completely worn out and need immediate replacement. The 19th crest gate is still awaiting installation," said Tangadagi, adding that the tender for the replacement of all gates has been finalised. "Due to the malfunction of the crest gates, the reservoir is currently storing a maximum of only 80 TMC feet of water," he said. Though he assured that there will be no shortage of water for the first crop, Tangadagi added: "The Tungabhadra Board (TB) has resolved to supply water for one crop. Therefore, farmers are urged to cooperate." "If the inflow exceeds 1.5 lakh cusecs, it will pose a challenge to release water from the reservoir. Hence, measures are being implemented to prevent such a scenario," he further said. The minister said TB ought to include officials from both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. "Despite numerous appeals from the Karnataka govt, the Union govt has remained unresponsive. Additionally, the TB has postponed installation of the dam gates," he said. On August 14, TB officials who inspected the construction site of the crest gates near Adavi Somapur village in Gadag district told the contractors that "all 33 crest gates of the dam must be replaced by June 2026".
