Raja's decomposed body was recovered from a deep gorge near Cherrapunji, 10 days after he was last seen alive. Police suspect the murder was a contract killing, allegedly carried out by three men hired by Sonam — Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (21).
The three were arrested in overnight raids soon after the body was found. Sonam, who had initially disappeared, later surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, the hometown of Raj Kushwaha — her alleged boyfriend.
Codenamed 'Operation Honeymoon', the investigation has spanned three states — Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. On Tuesday, the SIT seized fresh evidence from the homes and hideouts of the accused in Indore and Ghazipur.
Police have secured a six-day remand for the three male accused and are seeking a three-day custodial remand for Sonam.
According to investigators, Sonam parted ways with Raja at Mawkdok — where their rented scooter was later recovered — and travelled alone to Guwahati by taxi. She then took a series of trains to reach Ghazipur. The three other accused too fled via Guwahati and eventually reached Indore by train.
Police are now reconstructing the full timeline of the crime — from the arrival of the alleged killers in Sohra to the execution of the murder — and are probing whether others were involved in planning the crime.

Bengaluru: Truck owner imprisoned for letting unlicensed man drive
Bengaluru: In a rare but significant verdict, a city court has not only punished a truck driver for causing a fatal accident but also held the vehicle owner criminally liable for allowing an unlicensed man behind the wheel. The tragedy took place on July 17, 2023, when truck driver J Puttaswamy, 58, a resident of Byadarahalli on Magadi Road, mowed down a scooterist on the Kadugodi Railway bridge. Poornima S Hegde — a freelance professional and mother of a young daughter — suffered fatal injuries. Puttaswamy fled the scene, abandoning the truck. Thanks to swift action by Whitefield traffic police and the testimony of a witness who was riding just behind Poornima, the truck driver was identified and arrested. Subsequently, the court sentenced Puttaswamy to one year and nine months of simple imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 15,500. But the case didn't end there. In a pointed move that shifts part of the blame to systemic negligence, the court also found truck owner KV Ramesh guilty of handing over the vehicle to Puttaswamy despite knowing that the driver's licence had expired. "This conviction sends a strong message to all vehicle owners," a senior police officer remarked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Allowing someone to drive without a valid licence isn't just irresponsible, it can be criminal." The court sentenced Ramesh, a resident of Vijayanagar, to three months of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. Investigators said the case was bolstered by clear witness testimony and forensic evidence. "The deposition made by the eyewitness helped in securing the conviction. He identified the driver in court during the trial, explained how rash driving by Puttaswamy resulted in the fatal accident, and how Puttaswamy, without lending a helping hand to the injured woman, ran away from the place," police said. Besides witness statements, bloodstains found on the truck matched those of the victim. "We collected bloodstains from the wheel and front portion of the truck. The same was tested at the forensic science laboratory (FSL), and reports confirmed that the bloodstains were of the victim. This matching of bloodstains also played a crucial role in securing the conviction," an investigating officer said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Indian-origin doctor Mona Ghosh sentenced to 10 years in prison in US for $2.4 million medical fraud
Dr Mona Ghosh sentenced to 10 years in prison in the US for medical fraud. Indian-American physician Dr Moa Ghosh (OB-GYN) who pleaded guilty last year to the fraud charges has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the $2.4 million medical fraud that she committed through her medical office. The 52-year-old submitted fraudulent claims to insurers for procedures which were not medically necessary, including endometrial ablations and biopsies, ultrasounds, vaccinations, laboratory blood tests, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases. The practice went on from 2018 to 2022. Ghosh inflated the length and complexity of in-office and telemedicine visits and submitted claims using billing codes for which the visits did not qualify in order to seek higher reimbursement rates. Ghosh prepared false patient medical records to support the fraudulent reimbursement claims. 'When physicians submit fraudulent claims to federal health care programs, they divert taxpayer-funded resources away from those who truly need them,' said US Attorney Boutros. 'Dr Ghosh's fraud scheme was particularly egregious because she endangered the health of her patients by performing unnecessary medical procedures, including procedures that severely limited some patients' ability to have children in the future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo We applaud the victims' strength to come forward and confront this defendant. Our Office will fight tirelessly for victims and work diligently with our law enforcement partners to safeguard taxpayer funds and hold accountable those who steal from the American public.' 'Dr Ghosh spent years traumatizing patients, lying to insurers, and stealing taxpayer money to feed her greed,' said FBI SAC DePodesta. 'The depraved conduct uncovered in this case represents an extreme betrayal of trust toward patients who were simply seeking care and integrity from their doctor. The FBI will continue to aggressively pursue and hold accountable any medical professional who seeks to harm patients for their personal enrichment. ' The convicted doctor has been ordered to pay approximately $1.5 million in restitution.
