Netflix is taking its fight with Disney to a new arena
Netflix is taking its fight with Disney to hallowed ground: family-friendly sing-alongs. Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters" is briefly coming to select movie theaters as a sing-along event, in a new challenge to the Mouse House. Fans of "Kpop Demon Hunters" and its popular soundtrack can see the fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X on the big screen when the smash-hit film hits theaters in the US and Canada on August 23 and 24, Netflix said on Tuesday. The animated flick has become Netflix's fourth-most-watched movie ever since its mid-June debut. It set records by hitting a new viewership peak six weeks after its debut and narrowly missed achieving that feat again in its seventh week. "KPop Demon Hunters" owes some of its success to its chart-topping soundtrack. One of the movie's original songs, "Golden," is the No. 1 track on Billboard's Hot 100 rankings this week, and the full setlist is currently the second most popular album in the world. press release. Netflix can take on Disney without changing its tune on theaters Putting "KPop Demon Hunters" on big screens is an intriguing move for Netflix, which has often given theaters the cold shoulder. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in April that putting movies exclusively in theaters for months is "an outdated concept," Variety reported. However, Netflix has experimented with theaters, such as by giving "Knives Out 2" a limited theatrical release in 2022 and promising to give big-screen time to Greta Gerwig's forthcoming movie based on "The Chronicles of Narnia." "KPop Demon Hunters" has already moved from a hit to a cultural phenomenon, and creating a limited-edition event may further fuel interest on Netflix and for the soundtrack. Putting "Kpop Demon Hunters" in theaters, even for only two days, suggests that Netflix is set on making its biggest animated film ever a full-blown franchise. Netflix is also encroaching on what's long been Disney's territory: animated family-friendly movies with catchy songs. Disney's most recent swing in original animation, "Elio," underwhelmed at the box office despite strong reviews. Pixar's latest film grossed just shy of $150 million worldwide, and its budget was at least that much, The Hollywood Reporter said. However, "Elio" could get a second wind on Disney+. Netflix placing "KPop Demon Hunters" in theaters may not mean it's rethinking its broader movie strategy, but it does signify that it's trying to take Disney's bread and butter.

Here's Why People Are Praising "Zombies 4"
If you're a millennial or elder Gen-Z, then you know what a HUGE deal Disney Channel movies were growing up. The Cheetah Girls, Gotta Kick It Up!, we had it ~so~ good. Aside from a few bright gems like the Descendants films, there haven't been a ton of memorable Disney Channel Original Movies in recent years. But we may be entering a DCOM renaissance. Everyone can't get enough of Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, and I totally get why. The fourth installment in the Zombies franchise, which originally launched in 2018, follows Zed (Milo Manheim) and Addison (Meg Donnelly) as they embark on a summer road trip after their first year of college, only to find themselves caught in the middle of a high-stakes conflict between Daybreakers and Vampires. The cast also includes Kylee Russell (Eliza), Chandler Kinney (Willa), Malachi Barton (Victor), Freya Skye (Nova), Julian Lerner (Ray), Swayam Bhatia (Vera), Mekonnen Knife (Vargas), Lisa Chappell (Vampire Eldress), and Jonno Roberts (Commander Bright). Recently, Reddit user u/Illustrious-Term-539 kickstarted a convo about how Zombies 4 captures what made those OG Disney Channel movies so good in the first place: "I can't express how much I love this movie," they wrote. "[It's] what we have been missing for years now. It brought the magic of Disney Channel back. ... Disney Channel cannot stop making these movies. The new generation needs something to hold on to like we had years ago." A lot of people agreed and chimed in to offer their own thoughts on why Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires stands out: "It was INCREDIBLE. I absolutely loved it, and I totally agree about how important it was for the Disney Channel. I especially loved that when they sang 'Ain't No Doubt About It' this time, they didn't have the little 'I hope' or any other uncertainties. It was a beautiful moment." "I was about 18 or 19 when the first zombies came out, and it really had a lasting impact. Fast forward to now at 4 is here, and I may be past the ideal age, but I couldn't pass up watching it. It brought back nostalgia from when I was wrapping up my late teens/early adult years of my life. Seeing Milo and Meg pass the torch down to the next generation was so bittersweet and kind of sad to know its the end of an era, but its time for the next generation to take charge of these films. Between the Zombies films and the Descendants films, we were eating good, and I hope Disney continues to develop shows and movies like this for the next generation." "Having Eliza back really made Zombies 4 feel like a return, not just an imitation." "I LOVE every Zombies movie. I'm 42. My kids are 8 and 6. They watch these on repeat and I'm not mad. My daughter's last b-day was Zombies themed. I know the words to every song. ... They are great, wholesome movies teaching them about [accepting] differences." "I LOVE the fact [that they] did a rendition of the 'Someday' dance. I was really hoping for it!" "The movie wasn't perfect, but thats fine. It was better than I thought and actually cleared up a small plot hole about Zed's Z-band. There was some cringey dialogue, but hey, it's a Disney Channel movie, so that should be expected. Personally I enjoyed this more than Rise of Red. ... I think having Milo and Meg as executive producers helped [because] they literally spent their teen years doing this franchise." "I'm 27 and loved it. The songs are a vibe, the actors are SO cute, and it's a cheesy, feel-good vibe! I downloaded some of the album on my phone hahaha! I miss old Disney, and this took me back!" "I liked Zombies 4 more than D4 [Descendants: Rise of the Red], and I think it's because there was still consistency of the lead characters. I also thought the songs in Z4 were really catchy?? It felt like the best of the different movies combined in one. I thought Z3 was too similar to Z2, but Z4 felt different because they were passing the torch to new leads, and it was a whole new storyline." "I know MD and MM have said they want more behind the camera work too, but I (selfishly) hope that Zed and Addison aren't done with. Would be cool to see them older and (in the far future) having a family. I get I'm too old for Disney etc., but it's also kinda like Wizards and their passing of the torch." "In the lyrics to 'Possible,' Zed and Addison said to Victor and Nova that they are passing the torch. 'Ain't No Doubt About It' was a message to viewers that we'll be fine and everything is okay. Yes, the Zombies franchise is changing, but it will still be alright. Eliza and Willa waving weren't actually waving to Zed and Addison, it was their final wave goodbye. And the movie itself ended with Victor and Nova to show they are the two remaining and the franchise will be moving forward with THEM as the new 'Zed and Addison.'" What are your hopes for future Disney Channel movies? Tell us in the comments! Stream Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires on Disney+.

41-year-old ex-Navy SEAL who became a Harvard-trained doctor: A ‘healthy amount' of insecurity can make you highly successful
Plenty of people try to conceal their insecurities, especially at work. You may not want your boss to know that you're terrified of public speaking before leading a big pitch meeting, or to tell your work bestie that you're worried about making a mistake on the job. But those feelings of doubt can help you become highly successful, according to Jonny Kim, a 41-year-old from Los Angeles with a lengthy resume: He participated in over 100 combat missions as a U.S. Navy SEAL, then got a medical degree from Harvard Medical School and flew to the International Space Station on April 8 as a NASA astronaut. Kim spent some of those Navy missions as a combat medic. In that role, he got comfortable knowing he didn't always have the answers, but it was his job to do all he could to save people's lives anyway, he said on bestselling author Simon Sinek's "A Bit of Optimism" podcast, in an episode that aired on August 5. "I think insecurity is something that we've all dealt with and it's a part of being human," said Kim. "I think a little tinge of healthy insecurity keeps the humility in check or keeps the ego in check." "Being unconfident in my abilities" during that time was a defining moment in his life, Kim added, driving him to pursue his degree in medicine and dedicate the rest of his career to be of service to insecurity can feel isolating, the average U.S. adult experiences a lack of confidence five times per day, says a February 2023 survey of 2,000 Americans by OnePoll. Real estate millionaire Barbara Corcoran, a longtime judge on ABC's "Shark Tank," says she sees the trait as an unexpected workplace strength: It means you care about what you're doing and want to put your best foot forward, she said at Fiverr's Bridge the Gap webinar in March 2023. On the TV show, "I look for a [competitor] who's mostly insecure, because I know I've got myself a winner," said Corcoran. "They have the ambition. They're going to work twice as hard, which, I think, is the great upside to feeling like you're an impostor." "The more successful someone is, the more self-doubt they have, because that's what drives them," she added. "I've never met a secure person who was a stellar star." When you catch yourself in a moment of insecurity, you can reply to your own brain with a few helpful phrases, Headspace mindfulness and meditation teacher Dora Kamau told CNBC Make It in February 2023: You can also express your emotions to someone you trust, instead of harboring them in your mind — or, if you'd rather keep them private, write them down on paper, Kamau added. Either way, expressing your emotions helps your thoughts "live outside of your body," she said — helping you process them without fixating on them.
