Netflix is taking its fight with Disney to a new arena
Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters" is briefly coming to select movie theaters as a sing-along event, in a new challenge to the Mouse House.
Fans of "Kpop Demon Hunters" and its popular soundtrack can see the fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X on the big screen when the smash-hit film hits theaters in the US and Canada on August 23 and 24, Netflix said on Tuesday.
The animated flick has become Netflix's fourth-most-watched movie ever since its mid-June debut. It set records by hitting a new viewership peak six weeks after its debut and narrowly missed achieving that feat again in its seventh week.
"KPop Demon Hunters" owes some of its success to its chart-topping soundtrack. One of the movie's original songs, "Golden," is the No. 1 track on Billboard's Hot 100 rankings this week, and the full setlist is currently the second most popular album in the world.

Netflix can take on Disney without changing its tune on theaters
Putting "KPop Demon Hunters" on big screens is an intriguing move for Netflix, which has often given theaters the cold shoulder.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in April that putting movies exclusively in theaters for months is "an outdated concept," Variety reported. However, Netflix has experimented with theaters, such as by giving "Knives Out 2" a limited theatrical release in 2022 and promising to give big-screen time to Greta Gerwig's forthcoming movie based on "The Chronicles of Narnia."
"KPop Demon Hunters" has already moved from a hit to a cultural phenomenon, and creating a limited-edition event may further fuel interest on Netflix and for the soundtrack.
Putting "Kpop Demon Hunters" in theaters, even for only two days, suggests that Netflix is set on making its biggest animated film ever a full-blown franchise.
Netflix is also encroaching on what's long been Disney's territory: animated family-friendly movies with catchy songs.
Disney's most recent swing in original animation, "Elio," underwhelmed at the box office despite strong reviews. Pixar's latest film grossed just shy of $150 million worldwide, and its budget was at least that much, The Hollywood Reporter said. However, "Elio" could get a second wind on Disney+.
Netflix placing "KPop Demon Hunters" in theaters may not mean it's rethinking its broader movie strategy, but it does signify that it's trying to take Disney's bread and butter.

Sony Lost Big On KPop Demon Hunters' Record Success, Says Report
KPop Demon Hunters Netflix While KPop Demon Hunters is almost exclusively associated with Netflix as it sets record after record across two different industries, streaming and music, few may know who actually developed and produced the film, Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind Enter the Spider-Verse (you may see some similarities to that style here). The film is a colossal hit, so surely that must be working out great for Sony, right? Well, not so much. According to industry fixture Matt Belloni, the problem is how this original deal was structured. Sony made KPop Demon Hunters for $100 million, then sold the rights to Netflix. Now, reports are that Sony will end up making just $20 million in profit on the deal thanks to those terms, as anything that happens from here, that's all Netflix, since they own the property. KPop Demon Hunters Netflix At the time, that probably sounded like a deal that was just fine. It's a good movie, it would be fed into the Netflix conveyer belt of content, be watched, and everyone will praise it for a weekend and move on. But the rest is history, of course. As I write this, Kpop Demon Hunters remains the #1 movie on Netflix seven weeks after release, something we've never seen before. It has been elevated to Netflix's second most-viewed movie ever, and it has its sights set on #1, Red Notice . It has placed at #1 on almost every top music chart with its fictional group HUNTR/X's track Golden, most recently achieving the ultimate prize, landing at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first Kpop group to do so, and the first girl group to do so since Destiny's Child. Netflix reportedly views KPop Demon Hunters as its ' Frozen ' equivalent, Disney's billion dollar franchise. While KPop Demon Hunters is not making bank at the box office, it's a huge success in Netflix terms and that will spawn at least a trilogy of movies, and there are rumblings of a live-action adaptation or even a stage show. Live-action may seem a bit goofy and antithetical to the concept, but the singing voices of the three girls are essentially those characters in real life, appearance-wise, so that helps. As for Sony, its involvement in what happens from here is unclear. Netflix, of course, needs someone to make these future movies, and while Sony largely missed out on the success of this first film, I imagine that will not slip away the second or third time around. We have no announcements of what's coming next for KPop Demon Hunters , and that may be why. I've asked Sony for comment and will report if I hear back. Netflix Could Lose ‘Stranger Things' Creators After Season 5 To Paramount+
The world of streaming can be competitive to the point of being cutthroat, and there's a development brewing between Netflix and Paramount that may not go well for the former. Variety reports that Stranger Things creators/showrunners the Duffer Brothers are in 'advanced negotiations' to make movies and shows for Paramount. An existing connection there is that Cindy Holland, Paramount's new streaming head, was the exec who originally greenlit Stranger Things at Netflix, and the rest is history. It wouldn't just be an instant departure. Despite working hard on finishing Stranger Things , the Duffer Brothers have two new series coming in 2026, The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going To Happen. There's also an animated Stranger Things feature coming. Rumors of Stranger Things spin-offs have been circulating for a while, and one of those still seems to be in place. But long-term, losing the architects of one of Netflix's most popular series of all time would be less than ideal for them, and it would be a big boon for Paramount+, a service anchored on legacy series and piles of new shows from Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan like Tulsa King and Landman . Stranger Things will end with season 5 this year with a somewhat ridiculous airing schedule of four episodes airing on November 26, three episode on Christmas Day and the last episode on New Year's Day, as somehow Netflix remains allergic to a true week-to-week offering, opting for these odd breaks instead (currently, Wednesday season 2 is on hiatus until its second half airs in September). We have seen plenty of departures like this before. A recent high profile one was Mike Flanagan, who made such Netflix classics like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass . Now he's over at Amazon doing Carrie and The Dark Tower series. Netflix is clearly looking for its next Stranger Things -sized hit. That show and Squid Game end this year, though fortunately it does have Wednesday to run for the foreseeable future. It does, however, remain the clear, unequivocal powerhouse in the streaming industry. A recent report said Netflix earns more than all its major streaming rivals combined, and its revenue is surging. Even with big shows ending, it keeps producing consistent hits and retaining subscribers. Paramount+, however, has been on the up after adding a number of well-watched series and distancing itself from a service it was once compared to, Peacock, which is losing boatloads of money.
