Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued a decree on Wednesday designating Thursday, 24 July 2025, an official paid holiday in observance of the anniversary of the 23 July Revolution.
The holiday, initially scheduled for Wednesday, 23 July, has been postponed to the following day, in line with the government's policy of shifting midweek public holidays to Thursdays to create more extended weekends.
The decision applies to employees across ministries, government offices, public authorities, local administration units, public sector companies, and state-owned enterprises.

Al-Azhar retracts statement on Gaza for fear of hindering truce talks - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's Al-Azhar clarified on Wednesday that it had retracted its recent statement on Gaza for fear that it could be used as a pretext for stalling or hindering the progress of ongoing truce talks. In a statement, Al-Azhar said the decision was made after its media centre closely monitored public reactions on social media regarding the retracted statement. The world's leading Sunni Islamic institution explained that the decision stemmed from the responsibility it bears before God towards Arab and Islamic nations' issues, foremost among which is the Palestinian cause and supporting Gaza's oppressed people. "Stopping the daily bloodshed in Gaza is a higher priority for Al-Azhar," it affirmed. Moreover, Al-Azhar expressed hope that the negotiations would result in an immediate ceasefire and the provision of the direly needed aid to the oppressed people of Gaza. Late Tuesday, the institution released a statement calling for urgent international intervention to save the Gaza people from the near-famine conditions imposed by the Israeli army. The statement spotlighted the plight of Palestinian people, denounced the global silence toward their suffering, and urged people of conscience from all over the world to act immediately. However, shortly after the statement's release, Al-Azhar deleted it from its official Facebook page. This came as the retracted statement sparked widespread controversy, with many believing it, coming from such a prominent and official religious body, could negatively impact ongoing Gaza truce talks. Dabaa Nuclear Plant's 1st unit to start operations in H2 2028: Egypt PM - Energy

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly confirmed on Wednesday that the first unit of the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant will begin operations in the second half of 2028. PM Madbouly made this statement while discussing the project's timeline during his visit to the site. He added that the remaining three units are slated for completion in 2029. According to a cabinet statement, Madbouly stated that over 80 percent of the project's workforce is Egyptian, with tens of thousands working on-site. "It is a great honour that Egyptian personnel are trusted to carry out this ambitious undertaking," he expressed. He explained that the plant consists of four nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts (MW), each with a capacity of 1,200 MW, and construction is currently underway across all phases of the project. The premier clarified that the Dabaa project is part of Egypt's commitment to having 42 percent of its electricity generation sourced from renewable and clean energy by 2030. According to a separate cabinet statement on Wednesday, the project will be operated entirely by qualified Egyptian personnel from the very first day of operation. Egypt has recently witnessed a sharp increase in electricity loads, culminating in a record high of 37,600 MW last Thursday — the highest so far this year. In previous summers, the country had faced frequent power shortages, leading to rolling blackouts. In 2023, the government introduced a load-shedding programme to alleviate the strain on Egypt's gas network caused by rising temperatures and increased air conditioning use. National dream The prime minister said the project fulfils a national dream the Egyptian people have had since the mid-20th century. 'It is now a tangible reality that reflects our national will and firm determination to possess advanced, safe, and sustainable sources of electricity generation,' he stated. Madbouly added that the project had remained a mere plan on paper for many years, until President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's strong political will and determination made it a reality. In 2015, Egypt's Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) and Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) launched the Dabaa nuclear project in the northwestern governorate of Matrouh. The project is Egypt's first nuclear power facility in the Mediterranean coastal city of Dabaa, approximately 300 kilometres northwest of Cairo. In April 2025, ROSATOM Director General Alexey Likhachev stated that Egypt's Dabaa NPP will become the world's largest nuclear construction project in terms of geographical scale once it is completed by 2030. Germany approves Eurofighter jet delivery to Turkey - Region

Germany said Wednesday it had approved the delivery of Eurofighter jets to Turkey, clearing the way for a deal that had been delayed by tensions between the two countries. Turkey had been in talks for several years on buying 40 of the aircraft, which are constructed by a consortium from Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain. The Typhoon jets are to be built in Britain and London is leading the negotiations. But all members of the consortium must sign off on the sale and Germany, which has clashed with Turkey over Israel's war on Gaza, had objected. However, the defence ministry had now "sent a written confirmation to the Turkish government confirming the approval of the export", government spokesman Stefan Kornelius told journalists in Berlin. News outlet Der Spiegel reported that Chancellor Friedrich Merz had bowed to pressure from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as the project is expected to support about 20,000 jobs in Britain. After Germany gave the green light to the sale, the Turkish and British defence ministers signed a preliminary agreement in Istanbul on Wednesday for the delivery of the jets. The sale "will strengthen the decades-long friendship between key NATO allies and will be an important step towards enhancing Turkey's advanced air combat capabilities", Turkey's defence ministry said. British Defence Secretary John Healey said the deal would "strengthen NATO's collective defence, and boost both our countries' industrial bases by securing thousands of skilled jobs across the UK for years to come". Turkey's request for the planes was submitted to the German government more than two years ago, but the two countries have since clashed over the war in Gaza. Ankara has vocally criticised Israel's offensive in the Palestinian territory while Berlin has been a staunch supporter of Israel, although it has voiced some criticism over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
