GERIK: The Works Ministry is preparing a report on the Pavement Condition Assessment to facilitate maintenance and paving work on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway, set to begin soon.
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that the assessment uses technologies like multi-laser profiler, falling weight deflectometer, dynamic cone penetrometer, and trial pit.
The assessment began on March 13 and was completed on May 13, following modern international methods.
However, the facilities and methods used depend on the allocated budget, particularly for road construction and repair, he told reporters on Thursday (June 12) after visiting the site of the June 9 bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students at KM 53 of the highway.
Nanta previously announced that the crash site is among sections of the highway identified for upgrades this year, with an allocation of RM55mil.
Various initiatives have been taken since 2023 to improve the Gerik-Jeli route, especially on the FT04 Federal Road, Nanta said.
Funds totaling RM80mil were allocated for 55 scopes of work under the Periodic Pavement Maintenance Programme to ensure the highway's good condition.
The Work Order approval will be issued based on recommendations from the assessment report, he explained.
Additionally, RM3.585mil has been allocated for the Street Light and Signal Light Maintenance Project, involving solar light installation along the highway, set to begin in July.
The solar lights will be installed at the crash site.
This project is currently in the procurement phase by the Perak Public Works Department and is expected to be completed by the end of October, he added.
The ministry assures that all allocations will be used optimally for effective highway maintenance. - Bernama

Heavy vehicle speed limiter rule to be enforced from October

SHAH ALAM: Enforcement of the use of speed limiters in heavy vehicles will be carried out in three phases, with the first stage set for October, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the enforcement exercise will begin with the verification of speed limiters and their activation, with full implementation by July next year. Under the first phase, heavy commercial vehicles registered after Jan 1, 2015 must obtain verification that their speed limitation devices are functional before October. He said this applies to all tour buses and express buses, and heavy vehicles with a maximum weight of over 3,500kg. ALSO READ: Mandatory heavy vehicle speed limiter policy being drafted This verification could be obtained from the vehicle manufacturer, technical service providers, workshops and service facility providers recognised by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). It may also be obtained from Standards Department-accredited bodies that are recognised by the JPJ. 'This must be renewed every two years. 'The document must also be brought to vehicle inspection centres when applying for a new permit or renewing an existing one,' he told a press conference here on Friday (June 13). Loke said the second phase will make it mandatory for heavy vehicles registered before Jan 1, 2015 to activate their speed limiters. ALSO READ: Mandatory speed limiters for heavy vehicles can reduce accident risks, say experts 'The document confirming activation must also be renewed every two years and be present in the vehicle at all times in case of enforcement checks,' he said. Enforcement under this aspect will begin in January, Loke added. Heavy vehicles exceeding 3,500kg and those ferrying more than eight passengers that do not have speed limiters at present must have them fitted according to JPJ specifications, he said. 'This aims to ensure that the devices (comply with) the necessary technical specifications,' he said, adding that enforcement of this requirement will begin in July next year. ALSO READ: Doubts over speed limiter reliability for heavy vehicles 'We understand that there are many vehicles without the devices, so we are giving ample time for (the installation),' he said. Earlier this week, Loke said the government is drafting a policy that includes the mandatory use of speed limiters for heavy vehicles as part of efforts to enhance road safety. He said the policy is being thoroughly reviewed to ensure there are no loopholes or opportunities for manipulation once implemented. This came after a chartered bus travelling from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with an MPV on the East-West Highway near Gerik on Monday (June 9). It caused the deaths of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and the driver and three passengers of the MPV. The bus driver has since been arrested.

Toll collection begins June 13 for WCE Section 2 stretch linking Banting to SKVE, rates start from RM1.32

SHAH ALAM, June 13 — Toll collection for the Section 2 stretch of the West Coast Expressway (WCE), which connects the SAE Interchange (KESAS) to the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE) Interchange and the Banting Interchange, will commence at 12.01 am on Friday, June 13, 2025. WCE said toll collection for the 7.2-kilometre stretch, which has been toll-free since its official opening on Jan 22 by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, will be entirely electronic, utilising Touch 'n Go cards, SmartTAGs, and RFID technology. 'The toll rates and payment methods for Section 2 of the WCE are fully integrated via the SKVE through the Tanjung Dua Belas Interchange. 'The toll rates imposed take into account the entire journey of the users, including the portions on the SKVE,' the highway operator said, adding that toll charges will vary based on vehicle class and travel distance, ranging from RM1.32 to RM13.85. Highway users are advised to ensure that their e-wallets and Touch 'n Go cards have sufficient balance before starting their journey to avoid any inconvenience at toll plazas, WCE said. Further information regarding toll rates and payment methods can be found at the WCE website, the WCE App, the WCE Infoline at 1700 81 6600 and via email at [email protected]. The WCE spans 233 km from Banting, Selangor, to Taiping (Changkat Jering), Perak. Once fully completed, it will serve as a vital transportation corridor connecting towns along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. — Bernama

Nanta: East-West Highway safety works are coming

GERIK: The Works Ministry is preparing a road condition assessment (PCA) report to facilitate maintenance and paving work on the Gerik-Jeli route of the East-West Highway (JRTB) to be carried out soon, says its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic). He said the PCA is being done 'according to the latest, modern and internationally applicable methods'. 'However, all the facilities and methods used depend on the allocations given, especially in building and repairing roads,' he said during a visit to the location of the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. Nanta previously announced that the crash location was among the sections along the highway that had been identified for upgrading work this year, with an allocation of RM55mil. The minister also said that various initiatives had been put in place since 2023 to improve the Gerik-Jeli route, especially on the FT04 federal road, Bernama reported. He said funds totalling RM80mil were also allocated to cover 55 scopes of work under the periodic pavement maintenance programme, which aims to ensure that the route on the JRTB is in good condition. Nanta added that RM3.58mil was allocated for the street light and signal light maintenance project involving the maintenance of traffic lights and the installation of solar lights along the JRTB, which will begin next month. He said the installation of solar-powered lights would also involve the location of the fatal bus crash. 'This project is currently in the procurement process by the Perak Public Works Department, and is expected to be completed by the end of October,' the minister said.
