Gerik highway to receive safety upgrades following tragic bus crash, says Nanta
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that the assessment uses technologies like multi-laser profiler, falling weight deflectometer, dynamic cone penetrometer, and trial pit.
The assessment began on March 13 and was completed on May 13, following modern international methods.
However, the facilities and methods used depend on the allocated budget, particularly for road construction and repair, he told reporters on Thursday (June 12) after visiting the site of the June 9 bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students at KM 53 of the highway.
Nanta previously announced that the crash site is among sections of the highway identified for upgrades this year, with an allocation of RM55mil.
Various initiatives have been taken since 2023 to improve the Gerik-Jeli route, especially on the FT04 Federal Road, Nanta said.
Funds totaling RM80mil were allocated for 55 scopes of work under the Periodic Pavement Maintenance Programme to ensure the highway's good condition.
The Work Order approval will be issued based on recommendations from the assessment report, he explained.
Additionally, RM3.585mil has been allocated for the Street Light and Signal Light Maintenance Project, involving solar light installation along the highway, set to begin in July.
The solar lights will be installed at the crash site.
This project is currently in the procurement phase by the Perak Public Works Department and is expected to be completed by the end of October, he added.
The ministry assures that all allocations will be used optimally for effective highway maintenance. - Bernama

Over 1,000 accident blackspots identified nationwide for safety upgrades
TUMPAT: More than 1,000 high-risk accident blackspots have been identified nationwide, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Public Works Department (JKR) conducted a thorough review of federal roads with sharp bends, structural damage, and inadequate lighting. 'We have identified more than 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide,' said Nanta. He noted that these locations face multiple issues, including poor nighttime visibility requiring proper lighting solutions. Over 300 solar lights have already been installed along the East-West Highway (RTB) to improve safety. Additional solar lights will be placed at identified accident-prone areas and sharp bends soon. Nanta shared these updates after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry terminal. The event was attended by Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub. The ministry has requested extra funding to speed up solar light installations for enhanced road safety. Regarding the new ferry, Nanta emphasised its role beyond transportation, calling it a vital link between Malaysia and Thailand. 'It facilitates movement, strengthens trade, and nurtures cultural ties and kinship,' he said. The previous Sri Tanjong ferry served reliably for 34 years before being replaced. The new Sri Tanjong 1 ferry, costing RM7.90 million, can carry 58 passengers, six crew members, and eight light vehicles or a 44-seater bus. Nanta highlighted the ferry's upgraded capacity for both passengers and heavy vehicles. 'It will support safer cross-border mobility and boost local economic growth,' he added. He also proposed preserving the old ferry as a historical monument for future generations. - Bernama

Works Ministry identifies over 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide
TUMPAT: More than 1,000 high-risk accident blackspots have been identified nationwide, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the Public Works Department (JKR) had carried out a comprehensive review of federal roads with sharp bends, structural damage or without adequate lighting, "We have identified more than 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide. We found that these sites have various issues, including poor lighting. "Recently, we installed over 300 solar-powered lights on the East-West Highway and they are functioning well. More will be installed at accident spots and sharp bends," he said after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry terminal. Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub also attended the event. Nanta said the ministry had also applied for additional funds to accelerate the installation of solar lights at identified locations. On the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry, Nanta stated that the service connecting Pengkalan Kubor with Takbai, southern Thailand, is more than just a mode of transportation but serves as a vital link uniting the two border communities. "It also facilitates movement, strengthens trade and nurtures cultural ties and kinship. The previous Sri Tanjong ferry faithfully served for 34 years without fail. "Therefore, the replacement with Sri Tanjong 1 is a timely and wise move – not only to ensure the continuity of more efficient services but also to align with future needs," he said. The Sri Tanjong 1 ferry can carry up to 58 passengers and six crewmembers, eight light vehicles or a bus with a capacity of 44 passengers. It was built at a cost of RM7.90mil and completed on Feb 28 before it was handed over to JKR on March 11. Nanta said the new ferry had enhanced capacity and capabilities, not only for passengers but also for the transportation of light and heavy vehicles. "It is set to play a pivotal role as a catalyst for safer and more efficient cross-border mobility and connectivity, while supporting the socio-economic activities of the people. "I am confident that with its advanced operational capabilities and improved capacity, the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry will provide a more comprehensive service experience to the people. More importantly, it will catalyse local economic growth, especially in the Tumpat district and border areas," he said. Meanwhile, Nanta also suggested that the old ferry be preserved as a lasting monument for future generations. – Bernama

Too costly to build many bike lanes
THERE is no plan to build motorcycle lanes on all federal roads due to the high cost involved, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi ( pic ). However, he said the government has allocated RM20mil to upgrade existing motorcycle lanes on the Federal Highway as part of ongoing efforts to enhance motorcyclist safety. This upgrade is part of Rolling Plan 5 under the 12th Malaysia Plan, he said. 'We have constructed motorcycle lanes in selected locations on federal roads for over a decade. These included exclusive motorcycle lanes, physically separated from main roads, and non-exclusive lanes built on widened road shoulders,' he said in a written parliamentary reply to Hassan Saad (PN-Baling).
