Graeme Souness reveals how Rangers boss Russell Martin showed shades of a legend with ruthless act
Graeme Souness revealed how Russell Martin dumping captain James Tavernier and star midfielder Nico Raskin from his Rangers XI reminded him of a tactic used by the legendary Jock Stein.
Martin followed up his blast at some of his squad following Saturday's 1-1 draw against Motherwell in their Scottish Premiership owner by dropping four players, with Tavernier and Raskin the most high profile.
The new Ibrox boss - who hit out at 'egos' and 'some players jogging around' following the Fir Park draw - was rewarded with a 3-0 win over Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifier.
Ibrox legend Souness reckons Martin was setting down a marker by reading the riot act and walking the talk with his starting line up for the huge Euro clash and told how it's something Stein did with him and Kenny Dalglish when he was manager of Scotland.
Souness said of Martin's comments: 'I know he was upset by the performance at the weekend and he's put a marker down very quickly that his is not acceptable and this is how it should be.
'He went after the more experienced players, leaving the captain out, and I liken it to when I was captain of Scotland and I worked under Jock Stein.
'Jock Stein would always pick out Kenny (Dalglish) and I. He left the younger guys alone and made the point 'if I can get after them, I don't need to speak to the younger ones because that message has already got to them'.
'There's nothing wrong with that. He's said 'this is my level and nothing other than my level is acceptable'.
'It's what Jock Stein would have done - it's what he did to me, it's what he did to Kenny. He's putting a marker down that these are my standards and what better time to do it than after 90 minutes.'

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou insists Lennon Miller is preparing to face St Mirren amid continued transfer intrigue over the 18-year-old's future. I'm very sad on his behalf and on our behalf, because he was looking really good and we were really happy with the progress he's made and the impression he's made here in his first couple of weeks.' The loss of Sule intensifies Motherwell's need for attacking reinforcements, with Apostolos Stamatelopoulos the only experienced and fit centre-forward in the squad. The Australian missed most of his first season at Fir Park through injury but got off the mark in the Premier Sports Cup after six months out and got into good positions in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Rangers. 'He's worked hard in pre-season and he's looked good, he's looked better and better,' Askou said. 'He's come from a season where he had a lot of problems that set him back, but he's really looked good. I'm pretty confident that if we keep him fit throughout the season, that he will be a very decisive player for us.' Askou added: 'Obviously we are one down, who is a specific nine, which means that the guys who are left will have to do the job until he's back. Manchester Untied have reached an agreement in principle to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with the 22-year-old set to arrive in the coming days to complete a medical Benjamin Sesko turned down a bigger money offer from Newcastle, such was his desire to instead sign for Manchester United. The RB Leipzig striker is to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the dramatic transfer saga reaching its conclusion. Sesko will complete Ruben Amorim's attacking overhaul, joining in a deal that could eventually reach £74million. The Athletic report that the Bundesliga club have accepted a bid worth €76.5m (£66.4m) up front and a further €8.5m (£7.4m) in add-ons to sign. The Slovenian will arrive in Manchester for a medical after deciding against signing for their Premier League rivals Newcastle. Eddie Howe's side opened the bidding war earlier this week, offering £71m up front and more in incentives. And with Leipzig accepting both offers, it came down to the 22-year-old to make the final decision on his destination. But despite Newcastle boasting Champions League football, the Red Devils have won the race. After missing out on Europe altogether following their defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, there was apprehension they would be unable to land some of their top targets. Instead, Sesko was so enamoured with making the move to Manchester, he is reportedly leaving money on the table. Sky Sports Germany claim that Newcastle's contract offer was worth more than the proposal from Old Trafford bosses, with the striker happy to waive a portion of his salary. There is also an understanding that the player's agency was willing to give up a significant share of the commission in order to get a deal over the line. He will join Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who signed from Wolves and Brentford respectively, in a new look Manchester United attack worth more than £200m. Amorim made attacking reinforcements his number one priority this summer after a dismal season which saw them finish 15th and score just 44 league goals in the process. Amorim's attention can now turn towards a new midfield player, with Brighton's Carlos Baleba at the top of their wishlist. The 21-year-old is the latest Seagulls star tipped for massive things, following the sales of players like Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Joao Pedro. Baleba has three years remaining on his deal at The Amex, with Brighton unwilling to sell at this point. Motherwell keeper signs on at Airdrie as boss builds squad for Championship challenge
Matty Connelly has joined on loan at the Diamonds Airdrie have confirmed the loan signing of Motherwell goalkeeper Matty Connelly for the rest of this season. Connelly had been on loan at then-Lowland League champions East Kilbride in recent seasons, but had been recalled to Fir Park under new boss Jens Berthel Askou. However, Airdrie have announced the 22-year-old has signed up at the Diamonds. Connelly told the club's website: 'I'm absolutely delighted. I know it's been brewing for a few weeks, but to get it finally over the line is brilliant. 'I'm just trying to get as much game time as possible, and obviously do as well as I can for Airdrie. 'To gain experience is my main objective.' Airdrie goalkeeping coach David Hutton said: 'Matty's one we've been after for a while. We've been keeping tabs on him, and when he became available, we jumped at the chance. 'He's good with the ball at his feet, a good shot-stopper, and a good all-round goalie. 'It brings us that healthy competition for places that we want all over the park.'
