Would Nets' Cam Thomas be better off taking his qualifying offer?

USA Today21 hours ago
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas heads into August unsigned despite coming into the offseason as one of the better free-agents on the market, restricted or not. Brooklyn has taken care of business this summer by taking five players in the 2025 NBA Draft and trading for forward Michael Porter Jr., but the negotiations to re-sign Thomas have been slow and deliberate.
"Cam Thomas is in a complicated situation. The Nets still have a whole bunch of cap space, even when you account for agreed-to-but-not-signed deals for Day'Ron Sharpe, Ziaire Williams and Ricky Council IV," Spotrac's Keith Smith wrote when discussing Thomas' restricted free-agency. As of this writing, it seems that Thomas is unsigned because he wants more money than Brooklyn is willing to give him given the circumstances.
"But because they are the only team with cap space, Brooklyn has no reason to move on a new deal for Thomas that they don't deem a fair value," Smith continued. "Thomas has been outspoken about where he sees himself as a player. That's understandable, as tagging the scoring guard with the 'empty calories' tag is unfair. Thomas has improved as a playmaker and can score in a variety of ways that is only matched by the best scorers in the league."
Thomas, 23, is coming off his best season of his four-year NBA career as he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. While Thomas came into the offseason as one of the better free-agents on the market, he is restricted, meaning that the Nets had more leverage over Thomas than normal.
Additionally, only a few teams came into this summer with enough cap space to give Thomas a substantial offer sheet that would make Brooklyn think twice about keeping him or not. At this point, the Nets are the only team with cap space, meaning that they are essentially competing with themselves to sign the former LSU Tiger. To that point, Smith is one of many pundits to suggest that Thomas' best move could be to take his $5.99 million qualifying offer (QO).
"This situation is a flashing warning light for Thomas to sign the qualifying offer," Smith wrote. "That will see him paid $5.9 million for the upcoming season, which is a steal for the Nets by any measure. Following this year, Thomas will be an unrestricted free agent. And, crucially, he'll have a no-trade clause this year, as Thomas would lose his Bird Rights if traded while playing on the qualifying offer."

Boston Celtics point guard Payton Pritchard just dominated another pro-am tournament

Boston Celtics backup point guard Payton Pritchard just dominated another offseason pro-am tournament. The NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year set himself a new personal (and all-time) scoring record in the annual Canadian pro-am tourney "Ball Don't Stop," besting his previous tournament record of 61 points scored in a single game with a new bar of 68 points. Fast PP did it against a mix of the best NBA and other pro players mixed with streetball sensations and NCAA standouts, not some collection of guys plucked out of a men's league, making the achievement not a minor one. Ahead of a season the Celtics will need the University of Oregon alum to step up in a major way for Boston, this is the sort of thing one doesn't mind seeing for offseason recreational activities for Pritchard. the hosts of the CLNS Media "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Rayshawn Pleasant named All-American by Sporting News

Auburn junior Rayshawn Pleasant was tabbed a Second Team All-American kick returner by Sporting News this week. The transfer from Tulane was a phenomenal special teamer for Tulane in his first two seasons of college football before making his way to the Plains this offseason. Likely a reserve in the Auburn defensive backfield, Pleasant should see the bulk of his playing time this season as a return specialist. The West Monroe, Louisiana native excelled in the role while playing for his home state Green Wave, averaging nearly 39 yards per return across 13 kickoffs. He scored twice. While the junior didn't return punts, we could see him take over the role as a Tiger, especially considering he's unlikely to play nearly as many defensive snaps as he did a year ago. With the uncertainty surrounding wide receiver Malcolm Simmons, and head coach Hugh Freeze's possible inclination to save him for offense once he gets back onto the field, it would make a lot of sense for Pleasant to take over punt returning as well. The 6-foot, 200-pound defensive back gives Hugh Freeze's squad added depth to a special teams unit that has mostly struggled since Freeze took the job a few short years ago. Here's when the OKC Thunder will release their entire 2025-26 regular season schedule

It looks like the Oklahoma City Thunder won't have to wait much longer to fill out their calendar. With Opening Night and Christmas matchups already reported, the NBA is set to release its complete 2025-26 regular season schedule on Thursday, Aug. 14. The Atlanta Hawks posted on social media that their schedule will be dropped on that day. Which means the other 29 NBA teams will follow suit. That date is similar to the previous two years, when the full schedules were released on Aug. 15 and Aug. 17, both on Thursday. As is tradition, the Thunder will kick off the 2025-26 season as the reigning NBA champions. They will host the Houston Rockets Opening Night on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Kevin Durant will attend OKC's pregame ceremony of the banner drop and rings being handed out. It will also be the first game in the new NBC broadcast era. After being snubbed last year, the Thunder are back on the Christmas Day slate. They will host the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, Dec. 25. The NBA promotes the holiday as one of its biggest days of the regular season. It only made sense to have the NBA champion on it. Until then, thought, expect regular-season schedule news to slowly trickle in until Aug. 14. Special regular-season matchups — such as OKC's 2025 NBA Cup group games — could be announced sooner in the next few days. The Thunder already know their opponents for the in-season tournament. It's now about when they'll play them. In the driest part of the NBA calendar, August's schedule release day is an oasis for the two-month snoozefest. The Thunder will enter the 2025-26 season as a popular pick to repeat as NBA champions. They're running it back with mostly the same roster that just had one of the greatest seasons ever.
