'Announcing a farewell mid-season isn't the best strategy' – Ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Michael Morton implied that Jose Riveiro's announcement of his departure from the club mid-season might have affected the Buccaneers.
The 49-year-old Spanish coach has had a great three-year stint at Pirates, winning five trophies in six finals. Last month, Riveiro dropped a bombshell when he announced that he won't be renewing his contract at the end of the season when his contract expires.
At the time, Orlando Pirates were in a hunt for a treble, having already won the MTN8. The Soweto giants were already in the CAF Champions League and still in a chance to win the Betway Premiership.
Everything seemed to have collapsed when Riveiro's men were knocked out in the CAF CL semi-final by Egyptian side Pyramids. After that, Pirates slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United, which all but ended their title hopes.
This past weekend, the Sea Robbers lost their first final under Riveiro following a 2-1 loss to rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Speaking on X (Twitter), Morton asked if coaches announcing their exit mid-season was a good idea.
'Two managers, two mid-season farewell announcements, two treble pursuits…both falling short. Perhaps announcing a farewell mid-season isn't the best strategy'? The former Orlando Pirates star asked.
Many Bucs fans also felt Riveiro's departure may have affected the players' morale.
'The announcement was premature and as a result, it demoralised the team. Perhaps the coach should have waited until the end of the season,' tweeted @TSOliphant.
With only the MTN8 to show this season, Orlando Pirates will feel they could have deserved more, given how they played.

City chairman Comitis singles out big-name players after relegation
'It was like mixing oil with water. Nothing worked. They didn't stand up to be counted,' Comitis told 94.7FM. Cape Town City owner John Comitis has hit out at the performance of Cape Town City's headline signings this season. City's experienced players The Mother City outfit brought in a wealth of experience in players like Fortune Makaringe, Kamohelo Mokotjo and Thulani Serero. But it didn't work as City finished 15th in the Premiership table and ultimately failed to retain their top flight status. 'We added nine players, all big hitters with big salaries,' Comitis told Robert Marawa on 94.7FM. 'They came from big overseas clubs. They had been playing on the bench at most of those clubs, but they were big brands and we thought it was what the club needs. 'We had maturity mixed with youth and we thought it was a good mix. But it was like mixing oil with water. Nothing worked. They didn't stand up to be counted.' City sacked head coach Eric Tinkler at the end of 2024, and Muhsin Ertugral came in as interim head coach. Despite wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, however, Ertugral was unable to halt the slide. Neither was Diogo Peral, who replaced Ertugral in March. 'If Eric had stayed could we have done something more? Who knows? If we had stuck with Muhsin would we have got something out of it? Who knows? Was Diogo the right choice? Who knows?' Added Comitis. Orlando Pirates news: Mother City star available, Moloisane update
Orlando Pirates will surely be enquiring about long-term target Jaedin Rhodes, who suffered heartbreak on Wednesday at the hands of Orbit College. Cape Town City's 1-0 defeat means they are officially relegated from the PSL, opening the door for the Buccaneers to finally get their man, a player they tried to sign in January and reportedly vowed to try again this offseason – now things just easier. 'One of those reinforcements could be a long-time target, Jaedin Rhodes. Although the 22-year-old has endured an underwhelming season with Cape Town City, he remains a high priority on the Buccaneers' list,' a source said before the offseason window. 'The club [Orlando Pirates] has been met with resistance by City in previous attempts to lure Rhodes to Gauteng, but according to sources, will try once more in the upcoming window. Complicating matters will be the Citizens' peculiar situation.' Stellenbosch centre-back Thabo Moloisane is another Western Cape-based star Orlando Pirates are eyeing, however, luring him might take more convincing. The defender is enjoying his time at Stellenbosch where he has risen up the ranks, earning himself a Bafana Bafana call-up. 'I think when you have interest in your name, it shows you're doing well and you're playing well, and I'm just happy that my work is finally showing,' he told SABC Sport. 'I've prayed for days when I'm a Bafana Bafana player, and I try by all means to remain as consistent as I can, and at the moment it's just to continue doing what I can, and God is in control, so we'll see.' 'For me, I know the right time, everything that has happened in my career has always come at the right time,' the Orlando Pirates target said.
