Matt Smith will play the villain in Star Wars: Starfighter.
The House of the Dragon star has signed up to appear alongside Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the upcoming film after director Shawn Levy met with a number of actors about the key role in the movie, and executives opted for the former Doctor Who lead, Deadline reports.
Exact details on Matt's role in the film are being kept vague, but sources told the outlet it will be one of the villains.
Star Wars: Starfighter - which will begin shooting later this year ahead of a May 2027 release - will act as a standalone movie within the space opera franchise and will be set five years after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker,
Shawn, 56, recently teased the film will be a whole "new adventure" for fans.
He said: 'There are many rumours, some true, some not. … This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It's a new adventure.'
Gosling, 44, gushed: 'There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn."
The script comes from Jonathan Tropper, who has spent the past two years working on it.
Levy has been working on the movie with Lucasfilm since 2022 and last year, he said he was not planning to connect his work to any other films or TV shows in the long-running series.
Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, he said: "I'll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question. Because there's only so many times that 'Star Wars' movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me, because I don't want to do a 'Star Wars' movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie."
The filmmaker - who has teamed up with his The Adam Project co-writer Tropper on the project - added he was making the flick with "tone and characters" at the forefront.
He said: "I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves.
"And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfilment, that's Star Wars to me."

Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson to star in upcoming romance drama from Joe Swanberg

Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson are to star in an upcoming romance drama for director Joe Swanberg. The 31-year-old actress and the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star, 47, have signed on to the Uncle Kent filmmaker's untitled romance movie, Deadline has said. Cory Michael Smith, 38, is also said to be attached to the project. While plot details about the film are unknown, Deadline reports the movie - which is being written by Swanberg - is set in several different locations across Alaska. As well as starring in the flick, Fanning will produce alongside Swanberg and Ashleigh Snead, while Dan Johnson, Kathy Gitibin Parsa and Ariana Parsa serve as executive producers. The upcoming film will be the fourth collaboration between Swanberg and Johnson, with the pair having worked together on 2013's Drinking Buddies, Digging for Fire in 2015 and Win It All in 2017. Dakota Fanning is known for her role in The Equalizer 3, where she stars opposite Denzel Washington's grizzled Robert McCall as Emma Collins. In the film, retired assassin Robert McCall (Washington) seeks peace in a quiet Italian town but discovers it's under the grip of a violent mafia. As danger escalates, he unleashes his brutal skills to protect the people he now calls family. After The Equalizer 3 released in 2023, Washington confirmed a fourth and fifth movie were in the works. He told Esquire magazine: 'I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we're doing four and five. More people are happy about that - people love those daggone [God damn] Equalizers.' The Gladiator II actor, 70, added the franchise was as much for audiences as it was for him, because he loved getting the chance to be an action hero. He said: 'But I've come to realise that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they're for the people. 'They want me to go get the bad guys: 'We can't get them, so you go get them.' And I say, 'Okay, I'll get them! Just wait right there. I'll be right back!'' At the time of The Eqalizer 3's release, director Antoine Fuqua said he saw the movie as the final chapter of the franchise, but hinted he might explore a prequel using CGI to de-age Washington. Speaking to NME, the filmmaker said: 'I definitely thought about it a lot. Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff. 'Is there a story to be told how [McCall] became this person - the younger version. I've had the conversation with [writer] Richard Wenk quite a bit.' While de-aging technology has been used for actors like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Robert De Niro in The Irishman, Fuqua admitted he was unsure if Washington would be open to the idea. He explained: 'I haven't talked to Denzel about that yet. It's all so fresh and new. I'm still watching [de-aging technology advance]. I've watched Harrison Ford's film and I know there are other movies coming out. 'I think Sony has one coming out with Tom Hanks soon [Here]. And I'm hearing the technology is getting better and better and better. So I'm kind of watching it to see where it goes.'

Josh Brolin reveals his ‘trepidation' over The Goonies sequel

Josh Brolin is uncertain about making a sequel to The Goonies because he's concerned it might 'taint' the original movie. While the 57-year-old actor - who starred in the 1985 adventure flick as Brandon 'Brand' Walsh - wants a follow-up to go ahead, Brolin admitted he was also apprehensive about a Goonies sequel because he doesn't want to ruin the 'memory' of the first film. Speaking about a Goonies sequel with Entertainment Tonight, he said: 'I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation. 'It's just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is].' The Weapons star then joked about a possible plot for a Goonies sequel that would catch up with the gang when they're much older. He teased: 'It's like, 'Oh, we came out with another,' and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn't see very well. What are you going to do? I don't know.' Brolin added a Goonies follow-up could work if it had the full backing of the movie's original producer and co-writer Steven Spielberg. The Dune star said: 'Maybe it could be great. If it's great, you'll know. If Spielberg approves it, you know it's going to be good.' Even so, the Avengers: Endgame actor conceded several Goonies sequel scripts have already been presented to the Jurassic Park filmmaker, though Brolin believes none have met Spielberg's high standards yet. He said: 'I think there's been five scripts so far through the years and he hasn't approved anything yet. 'Spielberg is picky, and he has a reason to be because he has great taste.' In January, it was reported a second Goonies movie was in development at Warner Bros., with Chris Columbus - who wrote the original movie with Spielberg - slated to return for the flick. Spielberg himself was also said to have been tapped to return as producer for the film. Although no specific details about the supposed sequel were disclosed, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. was shifting its focus toward established franchises, and therefore had begun development on a second Goonies film. The Goonies - which stars Ke Huy Quan, Sean Austin, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen and Brolin - follows a group of friends who discover an old pirate map and set off on a treasure hunt to save their homes from foreclosure. Along the way, they face booby traps, secret caves, and a family of criminals hot on their trail. Brolin's Goonies co-star Ke Huy Quan previously said he had his 'fingers crossed' for a sequel. He said of a Goonies follow-on: 'Well, fingers crossed. We have an incredible writer writing the script. Chris Columbus, Spielberg, obviously, same creative team. Except we've been developing for a long time. 'I want to be optimistic this time around. Hopefully, it will happen soon.'
