India has outperformed global growth average despite challenges: Om Birla
Brasilia/New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday said despite the global uncertainties and domestic challenges, India has consistently outperformed the global growth average. 'Rising from the 10th largest economy in 2014 to the 4th largest today is a testament to India's robust policies and the strength of its people,' Birla said while addressing the 2nd Working Session of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum here on the theme 'BRICS Parliamentary Action in Search of New Paths for Economic Development', an official statement said. He said that from 2014-15 to 2024-25, India's GDP has grown at an average rate of over 7 percent, making it the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Birla noted that India is not only the world's largest and most vibrant democracy but also a nation with stable governance, strong constitutional institutions, the rule of law, a transparent and accountable tax system, and decisive leadership that has earned the trust of global investors. The Lok Sabha Speaker said that India supports a fair and rule-based global trading system—one that adequately addresses the needs and aspirations of the Global South. 'India views the BRICS Parliamentary Forum as a vital platform—where through shared efforts and dialogue, we can redefine the contours of economic development. This forum further reinforces our commitment to mutual cooperation, solidarity, and the welfare of our citizens,' the Speaker added. Moreover, during his bilateral meeting with President of the Federal Senate of Brazil, Davi Alcolumbre, Birla said that terrorism is the biggest threat to global peace and stability. While referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 innocent civilians were brutally killed, Birla said, 'Pakistan has failed to take concrete action against the terrorist infrastructure operating from its territory; India exercised its right to respond, to prevent such cross-border attacks in the future, and to defend itself.' On Operation Sindoor, Birla said that these steps were 'measured, non-provocative, proportionate, and responsible'. Their sole objective was to destroy terrorist infrastructure and neutralise the capabilities of terrorists. 'Today's India is firmly committed to a policy of zero tolerance towards all forms of terrorism and gives a strong response to every terrorist attack,' he added. On the sidelines of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum, the Lok Sabha Speaker also held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil Hugo Motta. Birla observed that India and Brazil are natural partners. Both countries have, from time to time, provided direction and momentum to their bilateral relations through high-level dialogues. He added, 'There is extensive collaboration between the two countries in areas such as defence, technology, space, energy, and culture. The special session organised by the Brazilian Congress in 2022 on the occasion of 75 years of India's independence is a testament to our special friendship.'

PM leads nationwide green drive; kicks off Aravalli Green Wall Project
New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) On the World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded a series of green initiatives, including the launch of an ambitious 'Aravalli Green Wall Project,' aimed at combating land degradation and the growing threats of climate change. Leading by example, the Prime Minister planted a sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in Delhi's southern ridge area, further strengthening the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, which was launched last year to promote tree plantation in honour of one's mother. Highlighting the ecological significance of the Aravalli range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, Modi emphasised its crucial role in four Indian states -- Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. He reiterated the government's commitment to addressing the environmental challenges facing the region and beyond. 'To rejuvenate the Aravalli range, we must combine traditional conservation methods with modern, innovative techniques, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where space is limited,' the Prime Minister said. He added that all plantation activities would be geo-tagged and monitored through the Meri LiFE portal, ensuring transparency and accountability. Calling upon the youth to become active participants in environmental protection, Modi urged them to contribute towards increasing the country's green cover. Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister shared details of the new initiatives, describing them as a boost to the ongoing 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. He said the focus would be on restoring degraded landscapes, improving local water systems, curbing dust storms, and halting the eastward spread of the Thar Desert. 'We will work closely with local administrations to implement these measures effectively,' he added. To mark the occasion, Modi also flagged off a fleet of electric buses under a Delhi government initiative to promote clean urban mobility and sustainable development. 'This move will not only build a greener and cleaner Delhi but also enhance the ease of living for its residents,' he posted on X. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister planted a Sindoor sapling at his New Delhi residence. The sapling was a gift from the women of Kutch, Gujarat, in recognition of their extraordinary courage and patriotism during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Recalling his recent visit to Kutch, Modi described the gift as 'a powerful symbol of bravery and an inspiring tribute to the strength of women in our nation.'

Bihar sanctions compensation, pension for family of Dalit minor rape victim
The Bihar government on Thursday (June 5, 2025) sanctioned compensation of ₹8.25 lakh under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, to the family members of the 11-year-old Dalit girl who was raped and brutally assaulted with a knife, and later succumbed to her injuries at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on June 1. The State also announced a monthly pension of ₹7,700 for the victim's family, in addition to the allotment of a house under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana. According to officials, the girl, who was transferred from Muzaffarpur, had to wait in an ambulance for nearly five hours before being admitted to PMCH, as a bed was not allotted promptly. 'There is a provision under the SC/ST Atrocities Act that if any murder of an SC/ST person takes place, then a compensation of ₹8.25 lakh is given. Based on the FIR and post-mortem report, we have given the first instalment of ₹4,12,500 to the mother of the girl,' Mr. Sen said. The opposition, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Left parties, and the Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP), has been consistently attacking the State government over the incident. On Tuesday (June 3, 2025), the RJD's women's wing held a protest march against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Health Minister Mangal Pandey in Patna, while Congress leaders staged a demonstration outside Mr. Pandey's official residence. Mr. Sen also announced additional welfare measures. 'Apart from the pension, a house under Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana has been sanctioned for the family. I have instructed the Block Development Officer to ensure the house is built. In 2011-12, the family received a house under the Indira Awas Yojana but could not construct it. In this special case, we have taken the decision to provide ₹1.20 lakh for house construction and ₹12,000 for a toilet,' he said. He added that the second instalment of ₹4,12,500 would be disbursed once the chargesheet is filed by the police. According to the police, the minor was raped and found with around 20 knife wounds on and around her neck in a pit at a brick kiln in Muzaffarpur on May 26. The accused was arrested the same evening. Union Minister and ruling party leader Chirag Paswan wrote to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday, calling the incident 'a failure of the state's law and order and public health infrastructure', and demanded strict action against those responsible. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati also criticised the State government, describing the incident as evidence of Bihar's poor law and health systems. Amid mounting outrage, the State Health Department, on June 3, took disciplinary action against two senior medical officials of PMCH and Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, for dereliction of duty.
