9-1-1 renewed for season 9 as ABC expands franchise with Nashville spinoff
ABC's hit procedural drama 9-1-1 has been renewed for a ninth season with an 18-episode order, sources tell Deadline.
The renewal isn't a surprise, as the series continues to perform strongly on both linear television and digital platforms, including Hulu. Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the show follows the lives of Los Angeles first responders—police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and dispatchers—as they tackle high-stakes emergencies and personal challenges.
The ensemble cast includes Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Guzman, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, and Gavin McHugh.
The renewal marks the latest chapter in the show's journey, which began in 2018 on Fox. 9-1-1 ran for six seasons on the network before being canceled. Disney-owned ABC rescued the 20th Television series, picking it up for a seventh season, which premiered in 2024.
Now in its eighth season—and second on ABC—the series continues to be a key player in the network's lineup. It currently ranks second in total viewership and holds the top spot among adults 18-49 in Live+Same Day ratings.
Next season, 9-1-1 will be joined by its spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville, which ABC ordered straight to series last month. Chris O'Donnell will star as Captain Don Sharpe, a firehouse leader and rodeo rider balancing family life with hidden secrets.
Season 8 has been anything but quiet. The 118 have faced swarms of killer bees, Athena (Bassett) landed a commercial airplane on L.A.'s 110 freeway, and Maddie (Hewitt) survived a brutal throat-slashing.
The series even included a crossover with Murphy's other ABC drama, Doctor Odyssey, adding to its high-stakes drama and connected universe appeal.

It made $8.7 million at the domestic box office in its second week in theaters. And finishing up the top five was Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines, at $6.5 million. It has grossed $123.6 million so far at the domestic box office. Rounding out the top 10 were: The Phoenician Scheme ($6.25 million), Bring Her Back ($3.5 million), Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye ($3.1 million), Sinners ($2.9 million) and Thunderbolts ($2.5 million).
