NFL kicks off preseason with moment of silence after shooting that killed 4 people in New York
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The NFL season kicked off at the annual Hall of Fame game Thursday night with a moment of silence for the four people killed earlier this week by a shooter who was targeting league headquarters in New York.
The gunman also wounded a league employee in the shooting Monday night. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told NBC he visited the employee for an hour on Wednesday and said he was improving.
There was increased security around Tom Benson Stadium, where Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
'That's real life and it's unfortunate that we live in a space right now that's a possibility and it's becoming a situation where if you're a parent, that's the first thing you think about is workplace safety for your child or for your loved ones,' Eric Allen told The Associated Press. 'And for it to specifically be the National Football League, the opening week is tonight, Hall of Fame is Saturday, and the game has made so many great strides, but it's just an example of there's still work to be done.'
The league held a virtual town hall Wednesday, giving employees an opportunity to connect and share resources. Goodell told employees on Tuesday they could work remotely at least through the end of next week because league offices would be closed.
Investigators believe Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby, then another in a 33rd-floor office on Monday, before he killed himself, authorities said.
Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies.
Tamura played high school football in California a decade ago but never in the NFL.

Lewis Hamilton says he has 'a lot going on in the background' after another tough race
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A day after calling himself 'useless,' Lewis Hamilton said he's facing issues 'in the background' after another difficult Formula 1 race. Hamilton finished 12th Sunday, the same place he'd qualified the day before, a result which had prompted him to call himself 'absolutely useless' and suggest Ferrari might consider changing drivers. His race was a world away from teammate Charles Leclerc, who was disappointed with fourth after starting on pole. 'When you have a feeling, you have a feeling. There's a lot going on in the background that is not great,' Hamilton told British broadcaster Sky Sports after the race when asked to explain his comments from a day before. Asked if he'd lost his love of racing, Hamilton said no. In response to a question about seemingly being forced off the track by old rival Max Verstappen, a standout moment in an otherwise largely quiet race for Hamilton, he said: 'I don't really remember it, to be honest.' Verstappen was investigated over the incident, but not punished. Hamilton 'waived his right to attend the hearing,' the ruling from the stewards said. A representative for Ferrari speaking on Hamilton's behalf 'confirmed that there was no contact between both cars and further stated that the driver of Car 44 (Hamilton) chose not to attempt to remain on track,' the stewards added. It was a frustrating day overall for Ferrari as Leclerc lost pace in the second half of the race and went from fighting for the win to dropping off the podium altogether after a hard-fought battle with George Russell of Mercedes. In a lengthy radio message, Leclerc suggested Ferrari was not listening to him in an 'incredibly frustrating' situation and that the car had become 'undriveable.' After the race, though, Leclerc said he'd been mistaken. Chilean rescuers recover the bodies of 4 miners who were trapped in a collapsed shaft
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — The bodies of four out of five miners trapped in a collapsed section of one of Chile's biggest copper mines for three days have been found and identified, an official said Sunday. Rescue workers at the El Teniente mine, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the capital Santiago, are still looking for the fifth miner, identified as Moises Pavez, mine director Andres Music said. The trapped miners were located thanks to GPS devices, but rescue workers had to drill through dozens of meters (feet) of rock to reach them. A section of the mine collapsed following a 4.2 magnitude quake on Thursday, killing one worker and injuring nine others. Authorities are investigating whether it was a naturally occurring earthquake or whether mining activity at El Teniente caused the tremor. Chilean prosecutors also launched a criminal investigation to determine whether any safety standards were violated. El Teniente, located in the Andes mountains in central Chile, is the world's largest underground copper mine and is owned by Chilean state company Codelco. Shortly after Thursday's collapse, Codelco halted operations at the affected section of the copper mine and evacuated 3,000 people from the wider site to safe areas. The company canceled a presentation of its first-half financial results, set for Friday morning, due to the rescue efforts.
