They've earned this chance, and we see it as a key part of our long-term plan for preparing for the 2026 Asian Cup. As defending champions, we're here to win, and do the best we can for the country and our fans. We believe in the depth of our squad and we're ready to showcase it," Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso said.

Filipinas aim for title defense in ASEAN Women's Championship with eyes still on bigger picture

The Philippine Women's National Football Team is in Vietnam for the 2025 ASEAN Women's Championship (MSIG Serenity Cup) and its aim is to defend the title it won in 2022. However, for head coach Mark Torcaso, they are still keeping an eye on the bigger picture which is another stint in the AFC Women's Asian Cup and a possible slot in the FIFA Women's World Cup. The Philippines is grouped with Myanmar, Australia U23, and Timor Leste in the group stage of the regional tourney. "I'm not entirely worried about the opponents that we've got in our group," Torcaso said. "I think if we focus on ourselves, I think we can go to another World Cup." "We're going to really focus on what we need to do over the next six to eight months and make sure that we're 100% ready and it starts with this AFF tournament," he added. The lineup from the 2022 edition of the tournament, however, is quite different from this year's roster. READ MORE | Filipinas lineup for 2025 ASEAN Women's Championship Sarina Bolden had an ACL injury last April, while the likes of Katrina Guillou, Sara Eggesvik, and Meryll Serrano are with their respective mother clubs as the ASEAN tournament falls on a non-FIFA window. Still, Torcaso believes this is a good opportunity for some of the young players to get experience and step up for the team. "We also have to consider that there are a lot of young players here. We want to give the opportunity to play senior international football and see if they're ready for the Asian Cup because that's obviously what we want to aim for and that's where we want to go to another World Cup," he said. Among those who moved up from the youth team are Isabella Alamo, Lyka Cuenco, Jaycee DeFazio, Azumi Oka, Aaliyah Schinaman, Tea Pidding, and Adelaide Wyrzynski. Veterans such as Hali Long, Inna Palacios, and the Mcdaniel sisters Chandler and Olivia are also returning for another tour of duty. Prior to the opening match against Timor Leste on Thursday, Torcaso said he plans to have five to six training sessions with the hopes of integrating the new players in the system, "We've got three new faces in this camp, and then we've got two or three U-17 players that are coming in for the first time too. So we're going to use as much of the training sessions to integrate those new players, get them familiar with each other and show what our culture is in the team and what our fighting spirit is as a country," said Torcaso. After Timor Leste, the Filipinas will face Australia U23 on Sunday and Myanmar on August 13, Wednesday. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Jack Animam draws inspiration from Ja Morant

Ja Morant (in white) and Jack Animam (beside Morant, fourth from right) in the Make Them Watch Tour (Photo: Make Them Watch Tour/Nike) Jack Animam has weathered her share of highs and lows in her ongoing quest to uplift the local women's basketball scene. As she continues that mission, she also draws strength from a mantra by NBA star Ja Morant that resonates deeply: 'Nobody said it's gonna be easy.' Morant made his first visit to the Philippines last Friday as part of his 'Make Them Watch' tour, giving players like Jack Animam a rare opportunity to showcase their game in front of the Memphis guard. "The lesson is that nobody said it's gonna be easy but you have to continue working and keep going and keep the faith," Animam told the media after the exhibition game. "...because darating 'yung one day mo na you're gonna be in the spotlight. All the lights are gonna be on you and that just shows Ja Morant's journey." For Animam, Morant's journey is one that extends beyond personal inspiration, saying it echoes the aspirations of many in the basketball community, including those of the Gilas Pilipinas Women. The youth-laden Filipinas are coming off a gallant stand at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. Gilas kept its Division A status after pulling off a narrow 73-70 win against Lebanon with Animam joining forces with young guns Naomi Panganiban, Sumayah Sugapong, Kacey Dela Rosa, and Kent Pastrana. "Hindi medyo, bata talaga. But I think that just shows how resilient we are, us athletes, especially Filipina athletes," Animam added. "Kahit na kung sinuman ang nasa harap, walang aatrasan 'yan. Laban talaga 'yan and I think that's what we showed." Animam also hopes to see more international basketball stars engage with the local scene, especially with the Philippines being one of the most passionate basketball nations in the world. "Personally, makita 'yung ganitong karaming babae to join in this event, sobrnag happy. We're a basketball-crazy country so dapat lang 'yung mga basketball stars dito pumunta," Animam said. "And the kids can see kasi representation matters and to see these girls play, and hindi lang basta maglaro kasi talagang may skills at talent, just wow. Amazing." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Alas Pilipinas Women escape Indonesia to seize SEA V. League bronze

The Alas Pilipinas Women recovered from a Set 3 collapse to carve a 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-13 win over Indonesia and capture the bronze medal at the 2025 SEA V. League Leg 1 on Sunday in Thailand. The Filipinas, who ended the first leg with a 1-2 win-loss card, cruised to their third-straight third-place finish after seizing the same output in both legs of the 2024 edition. Indonesia, on the other hand, capped off its run with a winless 0-3 campaign. Alas struggled to put a stop on the tandem of Ersandrina Devega and Megawati Pertiwi, who both led Indonesia's convincing Set 3 comeback that dragged the Filipinas to a fourth. But Alas roared back in the fourth frame with Alyssa Solomon capping off a scorching 4-0 start before Fifi Sharma came up with back-to-back rejections that sent the Philippines to a 10-3 cushion. Solomon continued to dazzle after the former National University standout launched an ace and unleashed a hammer from the back to make it a huge 12-5 advantage for Alas. Eya Laure made her presence felt with two consecutive kills from the left wing before team captain and seasoned setter Jia De Guzman scored from the service line, sending the Philippines to an 18-6 lead. But Indonesia refused to surrender after unloading back-to-back blocks against Laure while Arneta Putri Amelian served an ace to fuel a 3-0 run, 18-9, and force Alas to call for a timeout. Alas heeded the call with young guns Solomon and Angel Canino scoring the next three points before Sharma took advantage of a one-man block and converted a quick to clinch the match point at 24-14. Canino put the punctuation after soaring from the back to seal the deal. Tournament recap —JKC, GMA Integrated News
