Retired forest official from Gujarat's Rajkot duped of Rs 8.93 lakh in digital arrest scam
The victim, a former Forest Head Clerk at Bahumali Bhavan, lives near Patidar Chowk in Rajkot. On November 28, 2024, he received a call from a woman identifying herself as Diya Sharma from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). She claimed that two Jio SIM cards linked to his number were being misused and needed to be deactivated immediately.
Minutes later, a second call came, this time from someone posing as Inspector Mohit Handa from the Maharashtra Cyber Crime Cell. The caller alleged that an HDFC Bank account had been opened using the victim's Aadhaar-linked SIM, through which Rs 68 lakh had been fraudulently transacted. The scammer claimed the money belonged to a woman who had since died by suicide and that an arrest warrant had been issued against the retired clerk.
As the victim hesitated, the imposter escalated the pressure. Through a video call, he showed a man in police uniform seated at what appeared to be a police station and claimed the only way to avoid arrest was to provide a security bond of Rs 2 lakh. Terrified, the retired official agreed to cooperate.

4,000+ motorists speeding on Coastal Rd challaned this year
Mumbai: More than 4,000 motorists were challaned by Mumbai traffic police for speeding on the Coastal Road so far this year, with fines issued running up to Rs 82 lakh. Around 1,500 challans have been cleared and Rs 31 lakh in fines paid by offenders so far, the police said. Additionally, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) challaned another 596 motorists for crossing speed limits, including several high-end vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi. KOLKATA: Calcutta high court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench has commuted the death sentence of 22-year-old Aftab Alam to life imprisonment without parole for 20 years, ruling that justice must not be "bloodthirsty" and punishment should focus on reform, not revenge. Aftab had been convicted of murdering his maternal uncle Mehtab during a robbery attempt at the victim's Dhupguri home in north Bengal on July 28, 2023. The trial court sentenced him to death, calling his act a "betrayal" against the man who had sheltered him after his father's death. Land fraud racket: 5 arrested with Rs 32L cash, 5 vehicles
1 2 Mohali: Mohali police have dismantled a land fraud syndicate, arresting five key members and seizing Rs 32.5 lakh in cash along with five vehicles used in the scam. Two other accused remain at large, with police hot on their trail. The arrested individuals were Avtar Singh alias Bahadur Singh (Dayalpur village, now in Sante Majra Colony, Kharar), Jagdish Kumar alias Jeet Singh (Kalahehri village, Ropar), Jagtar Singh alias Satnam Singh (Badeshah Kalan, Fatehgarh Sahib; now in Sunder Nagar, Morinda), Bhupesh Mehta (Morinda), Gurbaj Singh alias Gurbhej Singh (Paprali village, Ropar). Still absconding are Manga Singh and Kulwinder Singh alias Kali, both from Luhar Majra Kalan village in Fatehgarh Sahib.
