4,000+ motorists speeding on Coastal Rd challaned this year
Additionally, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) challaned another 596 motorists for crossing speed limits, including several high-end vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi. Next, the police plan to go after motorists driving in the bus lane as it hinders the removal of broken down vehicles during emergencies.
Residents of south Mumbai have long complained about reckless driving and noise on Coastal Road. "The Coastal Road has become a racing track for fast cars because of the low volume of traffic on the stretch.
Fast cars are modified to create loud noise. This is disturbing our peace," said Worli resident and businessman Viren Shah. He added on Sundays, racing enthusiasts gather at a set time, with over a dozen motorists participating.
Mukul Mehra, secretary of Nepean Sea Road Citizens Forum, said dangerous driving is witnessed regularly. "Incidents include motorists cutting across three lanes of traffic, at times, in sports cars.

The Forum has shared video evidence with the police to substantiate our claims," he said. "There could be a major collision where these fast cars could be a cause, even if not directly involved in the crash," said Mehra.

Prompted by such complaints, the RTO set up an interceptor vehicle on the Coastal Road. The vehicle captures speed and generates challans. Traffic police also set up a similar interceptor vehicle earlier this year.
"On the south-bound arm of the Coastal Road at Worli and on the north-bound arm near the tunnel, electronic displays have also been put up that show the speed of vehicles passing in the lane beneath. Seven speed cameras are being set up for automatic generation of challans," said a police official.
Of the total 596 challans issued by the transport department, Tardeo RTO generated 306 and Wadala RTO 290. Four squads have been positioned near crucial entry and exit points to monitor violations.
Mehra argued that owners of high-end vehicles spend around Rs 1,500 just on fuel for travelling from Haji Ali to Marine Drive, raising doubts as to whether the fine of Rs 2,000 is deterrent enough.
A Breach Candy resident said speeding during the day time appeared to be somewhat under control due to the interceptor vehicles. "But speedsters have figured out that early morning and late night could still work for racing, especially on weekends," she said. The Coastal Road accommodates a daily average of 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles.

Mining dept on month-long drive to recover fines, verify data
1 2 Jaipur: State's Department of Mines and Geology (DMG) began a month-long statewide campaign on Aug 2 to recover pending fines and tighten oversight in the mining sector. The department's director, Deepak Tanwar, issued strict instructions to all mining engineers and assistant mining engineers, calling for immediate action and accountability. Under the 30-day drive, officers have been directed to recover fines listed in various inspection reports. Daily progress reports must be submitted to the vigilance wing through respective zonal heads. Serious irregularities were identified in the Department of Mines and Geology Online Monitoring System (DMGOMS). According to a senior official, "Some engineers made illegal stock entries amounting to lakhs of tonnes without any actual mineral dispatch, causing substantial revenue loss. Less than 2% of the total penalties mentioned in inspection reports had been recovered so far." The misuse of e-Ravanna permits and weighbridges also raised concerns. In several cases, vehicles were shown as weighed and confirmed within just two minutes, despite routes covering up to 40 kilometres. Empty weighbridges were found issuing valid permits, and in some instances, permits from closed mines were misused to transport illegally mined minerals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo Tanwar instructed officials to carry out online verification of weighbridge data and initiate action against leaseholders and weighbridge operators involved in malpractice. "Any further lapses will result in disciplinary action against the responsible mining officers," the directive warned. The department also found that some officers, while preparing inspection reports against illegal mining, failed to cancel the corresponding mining leases. In some cases, proceedings under the Land Revenue Act (LR Act) were initiated despite leases still being active—an attempt seen as misleading higher authorities. DMG clarified that such action must only follow formal lease cancellation. Officers have now been asked to cancel non-compliant leases promptly, take possession, and proceed with auctions. Long-pending LR Act files in several offices have also drawn criticism. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Police target drug sales near schools in state-wide crackdown
Vijayawada: Director general of police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta on Thursday said the police department booked a total of 25,807 cases and imposed a fine of Rs 40.62 lakh during the five-day (July 8-12) anti-drug checks conducted under the 'Safe Campus Zone' initiative. This drive aimed to eradicate illicit drug sales within 100 yards of educational institutions, following the TOFEI Guidelines framework in the state. The DGP stated that the five-day state-wide operation was conducted across all 26 district police units against the illegal sale of narcotic drugs, including ganja, NRX drugs, cough syrups, cigarettes, tobacco products, and gutka being sold near or within 100 yards of educational institution premises. The state-wide crackdown was executed by SPs/CPs of all 26 district police units under the strategic direction and coordination of EAGLE IG Ake Ravi Krishna. The DGP further said the police department verified a total of 16,806 establishments during the continuous five-day raids. Visakhapatnam (3,468), Kakinada (3,115), and Prakasam (4,015) district police units emerged as the top three performing districts in terms of the number of cases registered, Gupta said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo Explaining the operational methodology employed by the department, the DGP said the department used a systematic approach, including intelligence-led targeting of hotspots within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions. This involved multi-agency coordination with the district intelligence wing and special branch, maintaining a surprise element through operational secrecy, and ensuring legal compliance under the NDPS Act 1985, BNSS 2023, and BSA 2023. "Operation 'Safe Campus Zone' successfully achieved its primary objective of disrupting drug sales near educational institutions. The substantial number of cases registered and fines imposed demonstrate the operation's effectiveness in creating a strong deterrent presence. The comprehensive state-wide coverage and systematic approach have laid the foundation for sustained anti-drug enforcement around educational premises," the DGP stated. The ongoing anti-drugs drive will continue with surprise operations at identified hotspots in coordination with educational institutions, Gupta added. Election Commission asks Rahul Gandhi for signed oath, proof of vote fraud claims
Bengaluru: Hours after Rahul Gandhi , Congress MP and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, alleged large-scale voter fraud in Karnataka, chief electoral officer (CEO) V Anbu Kumar formally wrote to him, seeking a signed declaration supporting his allegations and promising appropriate action if substantiated. Kumar suggested the declaration could be submitted in person since Rahul, together with a Congress delegation, is scheduled to visit the CEO's office in Bengaluru between 1pm and 3pm on Friday to submit a memorandum on vote fraud. Kumar's letter, issued under Rule 20(3)(b) of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, asks Rahul to provide specific details — names, part numbers, and serial numbers — of voters he believes were either wrongly included or excluded from the state's electoral rolls. The CEO released the letter along with the declaration format on its social media handles Thursday. Enclosed with the letter was a formal declaration format, which reads: "I, Rahul Gandhi, Member of Parliament, do hereby solemnly affirm and state on oath the statement I am about to make under Rule 20 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960 concerning… is true to the best of my knowledge (sic)." The declaration also warns of penal consequences in case of false statements. "Giving false evidence is punishable under Section 227 of Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023." If proved, the offence may invite imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of up to Rs 10,000. The CEO's communication followed Rahul's allegations at a press conference in New Delhi where he declared there was "vote chori" involving 1,00,250 votes in one Karnataka constituency. He alleged 11,965 duplicate voters in one assembly segment, 40,009 voters with fake or invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk or single-address voters, 4,132 voters with invalid photographs, and 33,692 voters who allegedly misused Form 6 for new registrations.
