
Warmest decade on record leaves trail of misery across Africa
For decades, there have been warnings that Africa, the world's poorest continent, was the most vulnerable to climate change caused mostly by the burning of fossil fuels up north.
Those forecasts are now a grim reality, a point starkly underscored in the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO's) just released State of the Climate in Africa 2024 report.
The past decade has been the warmest on record globally and Africa has been no exception, with a trail of misery from drought to deluge left in its wake.
'Extreme weather and climate change impacts are hitting every single aspect of socioeconomic development in Africa and exacerbating hunger, insecurity and displacement,' the WMO said.
'The year 2024 was the warmest or second-warmest year, depending on the dataset … Sea-surface temperatures around the continent were at record levels, with particularly rapid warming in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Marine heatwaves impacted the biggest area since measurements started in 1993.'
The sea-surface temperature spike was from January to April and covered an area of nearly 30 million square kilometres. This state of affairs makes tropical storms more intense and devastating.
'For the first time in the satellite era, two tropical cyclones, Hidaya and Ialy, developed in May and moved over the far north-western part of the basin near Tanzania and Kenya over a region rarely frequented by mature tropical systems,' the WMO said.
Surging sea-surface temperatures will also have consequences for marine life, coral reefs, commercial and subsistence fisheries and eco-tourism industries, which are vital to coastal African economies.
This correspondent observed coral bleaching while scuba diving on reefs at Sodwana in northern KZN in March – the first time I had seen that blight in the more than 25 years I have been diving there. If you spend time outdoors, you can't help but notice this stuff.
Subsistence African farmers who rely on rain-fed agriculture are certainly taking note, with last year's scorching El Niño event a case in point.
'The aggregate cereal yields in southern Africa were 16% below the five-year average – and in the case of Zambia and Zimbabwe, 43% and 50%, respectively,' the WMO said.
Then there was the ripple effect on the wider regional economy from dam levels. Water literally evaporated under a blazing sky.
'Low water levels and low hydropower output from Lake Kariba, Africa's largest man-made reservoir, caused prolonged power outages and economic disruption,' the WMO said.
Elsewhere on the continent, the problem was too much rain. Severe floods washed over Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi from March to May last year, killing hundreds of people and directly impacting 700,000. This was followed by below-average rain from October to December, raising concerns about food security.
West Africa endured floods that affected more than four million people, with hundreds of thousands displaced by the drenching.
The cycle is truly becoming increasingly vicious – floods followed by drought or vice versa – the signature events of extreme weather being inflicted on populations that are least equipped to deal with disasters that are biblical in scale.
What this means for you
These trends could exacerbate already existing water shortages in your hood and will push up the prices of many things grown in Africa that you take for granted – coffee, cocoa and vanilla, among other products. And depending on where you live, you will find your home at increasing risk of being hit by floods or scorched by wildfires.
However, the WMO report is not just a litany of woe.
'Many countries in Africa are embracing digital transformation to improve weather forecasts and early warnings and this has been identified as a regional priority. Artificial intelligence brings new potential to strengthen service delivery,' it notes.
The bottom line here is that Africa is getting whacked by climate change mostly linked to global greenhouse gas emissions despite only accounting for around 4% of such emissions – and the biggest emitters on the continent by a country mile are South African, namely Eskom and Sasol.
These, it must be said, are well-known facts among those who keep track of such trends.
But these trends have consequences. And at this rate, things will only get worse before they hopefully get better. The apocalypse is not in the future – it is unfolding in the present, and history has a long memory. DM

His interest only deepened upon witnessing two live weasels in the wild while travelling through the Sandveld area of the Western Cape. Smith's research is guided by a team of experts and supported by the University of Pretoria's Mammal Research Institute. His ambitious plans include collaring some wild weasels—an unprecedented move for studying this elusive species, which will provide invaluable insights into their behaviour. The state of innovation in South Africa: Building an inclusive future through technology

Globally, innovation is only accelerating as countries harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, and we cannot afford to stand still. We must take the wheel to successfully transform our economy and compete effectively on the world stage. And yet, too many local innovators remain locked out because of where they live, their lack of resources, and their inability to access the necessary networks. For South Africa to be a true engine of innovation for Africa, we must change that reality. This point was driven home at a recent Innovation and Technology Master Class hosted by The Innovation Hub. Exploring the critical role of data, algorithms, computing, and applications in powering AI technologies, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the United Nations University, made it all too clear that the future will belong to those who invest in the intellectual and technological infrastructure. Likewise, his work in developing African language datasets for Google Translate showed how homegrown research can shape global technology. The lesson is clear that to succeed as a nation, we must think bigger, act more swiftly in supporting disruptive technologies, and create an ecosystem where ideas can move from concept to market without unnecessary obstacles. We must ensure that innovation is not the privilege of a select few but an opportunity for all. For Gauteng, our task is clear – to be part of the businesses and industries of tomorrow and secure our economic future, we must seek to become Africa's leading hub for knowledge-based, innovation-driven growth. Most importantly, we must do so in a way that is deliberate, inclusive, and sustainable, removing barriers to entry for innovators from all backgrounds, from township streets to university research labs, and from cleantech entrepreneurs to women-led tech startups. Innovation cannot be left to the private sector alone. That is why Gauteng's provincial strategy aims to actively create the conditions needed for innovation to thrive. The key pillars of this strategy are: Inclusive innovation and the township economy The next game-changing solution can come from anywhere. The provincial strategy emphasises democratising access to innovation infrastructure, with a particular focus on high-potential sectors in the digital economy, green economy, and bioeconomy. We want solutions that create jobs, uplift communities, drive sustainable growth, and address local challenges, and we are proud to be supporting a variety of innovations ranging from agri-tech to water purification systems. Programmes like those run by The Innovation Hub and the Motse Innovation Centre are already making this happen, supporting businesses such as QP Drone Tech, a women-owned drone manufacturing company specialising in AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, and Microsoft Co-Pilot training for South African youth. We are also focused on turning more ideas into market-ready products. That means working closely with universities, research councils, and the private sector to move innovations along the path from research to commercialisation. Key to this is investing in intellectual property development and technology transfer, laying important building blocks for building commercially successful businesses and globally recognised South African products. AI, robotics, and data analytics are no longer abstract concepts. They are already reshaping industries, from manufacturing to healthcare, and will continue to define the future of work. Through hackathons, bootcamps, and pilot programmes, we are equipping our youth with the skills needed to lead in this new economy. Partnerships with industry allow us to test and deploy new technologies in ways that deliver real public benefit. Sustainability is non-negotiable. Through the Climate Innovation Centre South Africa, we are supporting entrepreneurs developing new solutions for energy challenges, waste management, and smart mobility. Our vision for smart cities further includes smart city technologies that will strengthen service delivery, reduce environmental impact, and improve the quality of life for residents. Government must lead by example, which means embedding innovation in how we deliver public services. We are shifting procurement towards problem-solving approaches, creating living labs in partnership with municipalities, and piloting smart-city solutions in our metros. But we must go even further. To remain competitive, Gauteng must link into global networks while ensuring partnerships deliver meaningful benefits at home. From BRICS collaborations to continental initiatives under the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), we must position our province as the gateway for investment into Africa's innovation economy and attract global talent to our doors. However, this is not a journey for the government alone. It will require the united effort of business, academia, entrepreneurs, and communities. But Gauteng already has the talent, the ideas, and the will. Now we must ensure the pathways to turn them into impact are wide open. University of Pretoria recognised as leading institution for AI research in South Africa

Image: DC Studio / Freepik The University of Pretoria (UP) has been recognised as the top institution in South Africa for artificial intelligence (AI) research, according to a recent EduRank analysis. This achievement highlights UP's increasing influence in AI scholarship and its sustained investment in research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation that benefits society. The ranking is based on an evaluation of more than 61,200 academic papers and 969,000 citations from 24 South African universities. Globally, UP is ranked 532nd, and it holds the second position across the African continent for its AI research output and impact. Professor Sunil Maharaj, UP's vice-principal for research, innovation, and postgraduate education, commented on this recognition, stating, "This ranking confirms UP's role as a leader in developing AI technologies that are impactful, ethical and relevant." He added that UP's researchers are actively "helping shape the future of this field in Africa and beyond." UP's AI research capabilities have been strengthened by new international funding awarded to Professor Vukosi Marivate. Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Francis Petersen stated that the combination of this new ranking and increased research funding reflects the university's core mission. "We aim to be a thought leader in areas that matter most to society," Professor Petersen remarked. He concluded that UP's AI research serves as a prime example of how the university can deliver solutions that are "globally competitive and deeply relevant to Africa's development."
