Yankees announce lineup vs Texas Rangers on Wednesday as they try to avoid sweep
It was another night, another blown save for Yankees reliever Devin Williams, who has now surrendered as many earned runs this season than he did his last three years combined with the Milwaukee Brewers.
After Jasson Dominguez failed to bring in a fly ball on the warning track, Williams proceeded to walk the next two batters before allowing the go-ahead, two-run single by Rangers first baseman Rowdy Tellez in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Those runs were the only ones scored Tuesday night in Arlington, as the Yankees' bats went silent with only a hit each from third baseman Ryan McMahon and shortstop Anthony Volpe, the eighth and ninth respective batters in the lineup.
Aaron Judge went 0-3 with two strikeouts in his first game back since he missed 10 games with a flexor strain in his right elbow.
The Yankees have lost five or more games in a row for the third time this season and are now 6.5 games back of the Blue Jays in the AL East and trail the Red Sox by 3.5 games, who are on a seven-game winning streak and have won nine of their last 10 games.
More importantly, if the Yankees fall short and get swept, they will officially be on the outside looking in on a playoff spot. The Rangers, who are only a 1/2 game behind the Bronx Bombers entering Wednesday, would leap frog them for the third and final spot in the American League wild card with a win.

It seems likely that Boone will try to find some lower-leverage landing spots for Williams his next few times out, as he did earlier this season after temporarily removing him from the closer's role. But the Yankees also do not plan on hiding him. 'It's similar to after getting off to a rough start [this season], he rallied from that and really threw up a couple months of really consistent, outstanding work,' Boone said Wednesday before David Bednar secured the five-out save in a thrilling 3-2 win at Globe Life Field. 'No reason to think he can't do that again. But it has not happened of late, as Williams has given up a run in six of his past eight outings with a 9.39 ERA during that stretch. It has been reminiscent of how he started the year, when he had an 11.25 ERA through his first 10 games. In between those stretches, Williams pitched to a 2.63 ERA in 29 games, which is what gives the Yankees hope he can still be an important arm out of the bullpen. 'I think wherever he's pitching, if he's pitching like he's capable of, he's got a chance to be massively successful,' Boone said. 'Part of it is now we have, after the deadline, bringing in a number of guys that have a ton of back-end, closing-type experience. In 111 innings with the Twins, Paddack held a respectable 4.95 ERA, 4.42 FIP, and 1.27 WHIP. He wasn't spectacular, but his addition to the Tigers' rotation is going to be crucial down the stretch. In two starts with the Tigers, Paddack has thrown 10 innings and surrendered five runs on nine hits without a walk.
