ARLINGTON, Texas — There is no running from Devin Williams' struggles, but the Yankees are not going to run from Williams, either.
Aaron Boone said Wednesday morning the Yankees need to 'keep running him out there,' despite Williams coming off back-to-back days in which he blew the game — a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning Monday and a scoreless game in the eighth inning Tuesday, both of which ended in losses.
It seems likely that Boone will try to find some lower-leverage landing spots for Williams his next few times out, as he did earlier this season after temporarily removing him from the closer's role. But the Yankees also do not plan on hiding him.
'It's similar to after getting off to a rough start [this season], he rallied from that and really threw up a couple months of really consistent, outstanding work,' Boone said Wednesday before David Bednar secured the five-out save in a thrilling 3-2 win at Globe Life Field. 'No reason to think he can't do that again. He has the equipment to do it, and hopefully just a little rough patch here and we'll get through that.'

The Yankees believe that if they are going to be the team they think they can be, Williams will play a part in what could be a strong bullpen.
But it has not happened of late, as Williams has given up a run in six of his past eight outings with a 9.39 ERA during that stretch. It has been reminiscent of how he started the year, when he had an 11.25 ERA through his first 10 games.
In between those stretches, Williams pitched to a 2.63 ERA in 29 games, which is what gives the Yankees hope he can still be an important arm out of the bullpen.
'I think wherever he's pitching, if he's pitching like he's capable of, he's got a chance to be massively successful,' Boone said. 'Part of it is now we have, after the deadline, bringing in a number of guys that have a ton of back-end, closing-type experience. We'll try to get these guys into the best spots to be successful.

Round 2 of Anthony Volpe versus Jack Leiter went to the Yankees shortstop.
In a matchup of the best friends and former Delbarton School teammates, Volpe got the best of Leiter again with an RBI single in his second at-bat that tied the game in the fourth inning.

Volpe and Jasson Domínguez then pulled off a double steal that led to another run on a throwing error by former Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka during Leiter's final at-bat.
Volpe and Leiter had first squared off last season, when Volpe went 1-for-2, the same stat line he had Wednesday.

Mark Leiter Jr., Leiter's cousin, also picked up the win for the Yankees after throwing a scoreless inning of relief.
Fernando Cruz (oblique strain) threw his first full bullpen session Monday and could advance to facing hitters in a live batting practice session on Sunday.
Ryan Yarbrough (oblique strain), meanwhile, is set to throw his first live session on Thursday or Friday. The Yankees plan to eventually get him to the 30-35 pitch mark in his progression before deciding whether they want to bring him back as a reliever or keep building him up to reenter the rotation.

Yankees place Amed Rosario on 10-day injured list with shoulder sprain

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees put Amed Rosario on the 10-day injured list with a left SC joint sprain in his shoulder Sunday, two days after he crashed into a right field fence and the veteran is optimistic it will not be a lengthy absence. 'Right now, I think we should be able to come back exactly when the time is due,' Rosario said through a translator before the Yankees concluded a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Sunday. 'I feel day to day physically but at the same time, we can't be sure, so that's why the 10 days, but the idea is to come back when the 10 days is due.' The Yankees recalled catcher J.C. Escarra from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to replace Rosario. Rosario sustained the injury in the 10th inning of Friday's 5-3 loss to the Astros. He was attempting to make a leaping catch in front of the chain link portion of the fence on a ball hit by Yainer Diaz. Rosario raced back for the ball, collided with the fence and fell backward as center fielder Trent Grisham backed up the play and threw the ball to shortstop Anthony Volpe for the force out at second base. Rosario was checked out by manager Aaron Boone and a trainer but stayed in the game. Acquired from Washington on July 26, Rosario is 3-for-7 in four games for the Yankees. He started in right field and played six innings in Monday's loss at Texas and entered as a defensive replacement in right field in three other games, including Friday. Rosario was the second recent Yankee trade acquisition to land on the injured list. Last week Austin Slater was placed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain after he played three games following a trade from the Chicago White Sox on July 30. A former top shortstop prospect with the New York Mets, Rosario has played 30 career games in right field and 55 games in the outfield. He played once in right field with Washington before the Yankees acquired him. Escarra made the opening day roster and batted .205 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 39 games. He was optioned to the minors on July 30 after Slater was acquired. ___ AP MLB:

Liberty star Breanna Stewart reveals when she'll ‘definitely be back' by after knee injury

We've got you covered on the Liberty beat Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Madeline Kenney about all things Liberty and WNBA. tRY IT NOW Liberty star Breanna Stewart was all smiles Sunday and said she felt 'great' after she wrapped up an individual workout on the Liberty's practice court while her teammates warmed up for New York's game against the Lynx. Stewart has been sidelined for the past two weeks with a bone bruise in her right knee. While she said her rehab process is going well, the team's training staff hasn't established a target return date. Stewart echoed Liberty coach Sandy Brondello's hope that the two-time league MVP will be cleared to play by the end of this month. Stewart went as far to say that she'll 'definitely be back' before her 31st birthday on Aug. 27. 'That's a non-negotiable,' she said. 'I have to be back before my birthday.' 3 Breanna Stewart (30) of the Liberty during the last game she played against the Sparks on July 26, 2025. John Jones-Imagn Images In the meantime, though, Stewart will have no choice but to continue to practice patience while nature runs its course. Stewart left the Liberty's July 26 loss to the Sparks after three minutes of action with an apparent leg injury. Speaking with reporters for the first time since her injury Sunday, Stewart said she didn't know when she initially suffered a bone bruise. 'When I stepped, I just felt something in my knee a little bit,' Stewart said. 'But I don't know. I think I just irritated it. I'm sure the bone bruise was there already.' July 26 was the second night of a back-to-back for the Liberty. On the previous night, Stewart looked gassed and shot 3-for-12 from the field, though she said after the game that she wouldn't use fatigue as an excuse for her performance. Check out more newsletters Right now, Stewart said she's able to do just about everything but play competitive five-on-five basketball. She's been shooting and moving around the court during her solo sessions. 'There's kind of no restrictions,' she said. 'It's just about keeping the load lower. So the time period of me working out is a little bit shorter.' Her next two weeks will consist of her ramping up her cardio and lengthening her individual workouts. 3 Breanna Stewart watches the Liberty's game against the Wings on July 28, 2025. Jerome Miron-Imagn Images 'Progressing the on-court workouts to get into playing so then when I do come into the game, it's not as much of a change,' she said. 'Obviously, some things you can't recreate but as close to that as possible.' Of course, Stewart would much rather be playing than sitting out, especially considering Kennedy Burke (right calf sprain) and Nyara Sabally (right knee) are also out. Stewart has been practically begging the training staff to give her the green light to return for the past two weeks. But as much as she wants to be back, Stewart also knows she'll be better able to contribute to this team when she's fully healthy. 3 Breanna Stewart watches the Liberty's game against the Wings on Aug. 5, 2025. NBAE via Getty Images Still, that didn't make watching the Liberty struggle through a four-game losing streak from the sidelines any easier. Seeing the obvious void Stewart's absence left was almost as painful as her nagging knee injury. 'It's the worst,' she said. 'Just knowing I want to be out there helping them and fighting and battling with them is the hardest part. But they got my back. And while we're gonna go through some struggles, we went through some, it's really about the bounce back and they want me to be back healthy, too. So they don't want me to rush into it either.'
