Missing Clark, Fever soar past Lynx 74-59 to win WNBA Commissioner's Cup
The Fever were missing All-Star guard Caitlin Clark, who has been sidelined since June 24 with a strained groin. That didn't slow down the Fever, who overcame an early 13-point deficit with balanced scoring and a stout defensive performance against the team with the best record in the league.
Minnesota had its worst offensive performance of the season, shooting 34.9% from the floor and making 4-of-16 3-pointers after averaging 9.4 3-pointers this season.
Sophie Cunningham scored 13 points while Aliyah Boston, Aari McDonald and Kelsey Mitchell each scored 12 points.
Alanna Smith led Minnesota with 15 points. Napheesa Collier had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Courtney Williams added 11 points but had six of the team's 16 turnovers.
Smith hit a 3-pointer and made an acrobatic layup to cap a 12-0 run that gave Minnesota an 18-9 lead.
The Lynx stretched their lead to 27-14 early in the second quarter. But they were held scoreless for the final 8:17 of the half, gong 0 for 10 from the floor as the Fever stormed back. Cunningham hit a pair of 3s as Indiana closed the quarter on an 18-0 run to take a 32-27 lead at the half.
The Fever built their lead to double figures as Howard scored 10 points in the third quarter and the Lynx never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
When Minnesota rallied to cut their deficit to 60-51 midway through the fourth quarter, Cunningham buried her third 3-pointer of the night to silence the crowd and send the Fever on their way.
The Lynx beat the New York Liberty on the road in last year's Commissioner's Cup final. Minnesota earned home-court advantage this year by virtue of its league-best 14-2 record.

DETROIT — The Red Wings are adding some size to their bottom six, signing winger Mason Appleton to a two-year deal with a $2.9 million average annual value, league sources told The Athletic's Chris Johnston on Wednesday. Appleton had 10 goals and 22 points last season for the Jets but is only one year removed from a 14-goal, 36-point campaign in 2023-24. Detroit had been looking to add size and hardness to its lineup, and Appleton will help with that as a 6-foot-2 winger with good territorial impacts. Appleton profiles as a true third-liner and could slot in alongside fellow former Jet Andrew Copp, JT Compher, or both in that role for Detroit. The Red Wings have needed a harder element in their lineup, and Appleton looks like that style of role player who can still chip in some secondary offense. What's interesting is that the move comes a day after the Red Wings added James van Riemsdyk, who also would have been a logical third-line fit. It's possible both van Riemsdyk and Appleton could flank Copp or Compher on that line, with the other either playing up the lineup or centering the fourth line. It's also possible the veteran van Riemsdyk could get a look high in the lineup after a 16-goal campaign last season. Neither of those options would classify as the kind of splashy top-line addition fans in Detroit were hoping for, though. Mitch Keller pitched seven innings, Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run single in a four-run eighth and the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out St. Louis over a three-game series, winning 5-0 Wednesday to extend their winning streak to a season-high six. Pittsburgh pitchers extended their scoreless streak to 31 innings as the Pirates finished a 6-0 homestand that started against the New York Mets in which they outscored opponents 38-4. Keller (3-10) won his second straight start following a 15-start winless streak. He allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked one. Dennis Santana and Isaac Mattson completed the six-hitter with one inning each. Pittsburgh, last in the NL Central, hadn't had three straight shutouts since 2015. The Cardinals were blanked in three consecutive games for the first time since 2022. San Diego shut out Colorado in three straight games from April 11-13. Tommy Pham hit an RBI single in the first off Sonny Gray (8-3), who allowed four runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings in his first start since a one-hit shutout at Cleveland. Gray retired 14 straight batters until walking Nick Gonzales starting the eighth. Pham had another run-scoring single, Kiner-Falefa followed with his single and Spencer Horwitz followed with an RBI single. After the game, the team was in a celebratory mood and while Clark may have been too hurt to step onto the hardwood, she wasn't too sore to enjoy some alcohol.
