As holiday plans begin to take shape for many across the globe, a dark cloud looms over the travel industry: a surge in holiday scams.
Globally, fraudsters pilfered over $1 trillion from unsuspecting victims in 2024, as revealed in a recent report by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA). Travel was cited as one of the hardest-hit sectors.
Analysis indicates that nearly $25 million will be lost to online travel fraud this year alone, potentially impacting one in five travel bookings.
This alarming trend isn't confined to the borders of specific countries; even South Africa is witnessing a sharp rise in travel-related scams.
Antoinette Turner, general manager at Flight Centre South Africa, stressed the seriousness of the situation.
'South Africa is witnessing a significant uptick in scams – from counterfeit accommodation listings to phishing emails impersonating major booking platforms. Criminals are leveraging advanced AI tools, making their tactics increasingly sophisticated. Travellers need to exercise heightened vigilance,' she warned.
In response to this growing threat, Turner offers pragmatic advice to help travellers spot red flags and protect their finances:
Stick to trusted sites and double-check URLs
Scammers are savvy, often utilising professional-looking emails or ads that appear legitimate.
To safeguard yourself, always type the website address directly into your browser, avoiding links.
Ensure URLs start with 'https' and proceed with caution if you notice minor spelling errors or odd domain endings.
Use credit cards, not EFTs
"If a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is," cautioned Turner.
Paying via credit card can offer some protection through chargeback options, while cash transferred through EFT often renders recovery impossible.
Don't go off-platform
Stick to in-app messaging and payment systems on trusted platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com.
Scammers frequently attempt to lure users to WhatsApp or email, promising discounts for direct bookings – a definitive red flag.
Watch out for urgency tactics
Be alert to pressure tactics such as fake countdown timers or last-minute discounts which can rush decisions.
Take a moment to step back and verify any claims.
Check credentials and verify logos
Scammers often mimic well-known brands to build trust.
To avoid falling victim, use official directories to verify travel agencies or operators before any transactions.
Spot fake reviews
Be cautious of overly positive reviews lacking detail, especially if they appear on multiple platforms with poor grammar.
Additionally, heed negative reviews that hint at potential scams; they can serve as vital alerts from fellow travellers.
Social media platforms are increasingly becoming the breeding ground for these scams, with Action Fraud in the UK reporting that over half of holiday scams are initiated via sites like Facebook or Instagram.
Turner succinctly captures the widespread nature of these fraudulent schemes, issuing a stark warning: "Scammers are exploiting every stage of the booking process, from initial flight and accommodation reservations to post-trip refund scams.
A holiday should be a chance to relax, not the start of a financial nightmare."

We spotlight three incredible young women: Priscilla Nkoane, Karabo Matlala and Farirai Sanyika, who are making waves in lifestyle, travel and wildlife photography. Through their journeys, they remind us of the importance of empowerment, connection, and the beauty of exploring our world. With a background in Marketing Management, Nkoane's content focuses on celebrating the beauty in everyday moments, whether it's discovering a new restaurant or sharing a hidden travel spot. 'What motivates me each morning is the simple but powerful reminder that I can try again,' she shares. This mindset has propelled her to create content that resonates with many, especially young women seeking inspiration. Nkoane's favourite local destination is Cape Town, where the stunning views and vibrant culture provide endless opportunities for exploration. Internationally, Switzerland holds a special place in her heart, with its peaceful landscapes that feel like stepping into a postcard. Nkoane's journey into content creation began during a challenging period in her life when she lost her job and her original Instagram account. Instead of succumbing to despair, she embraced the opportunity to start anew, sharing her authentic self with the world. 'There's power in sharing, in being open, relatable, and real,' she explains. Her platform aims to uplift and inspire other young women, reinforcing the idea that there's room for everyone in the industry. "Through my content, I've learned a lot, and I hope to keep creating a space that inspires and uplifts other young women like me. There's room for all of us in this industry, and I want my platform to reflect that," said Nkoane. Every day brings new adventures for Matlala, who finds motivation in the excitement of exploring the unknown. Her favourite local destination is the Kruger National Park, where the diverse landscapes and incredible wildlife offer endless inspiration. Internationally, the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia has captured her heart, with its breathtaking scenery and the majestic sight of elephants along the riverbanks. As a female photographer in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Matlala faces challenges but remains determined to break barriers. 'Every challenge I face only fuels my passion,' she asserts. Her journey is not just about capturing moments; it's about paving the way for other women to step into the field and showcasing that they too have a place in this industry. "With travel & wildlife every day brings a new chance to go out and explore, there is anexcitement about what the day may bring. What will I see today? That keeps me motivated and excited to start the day. It just reminds me that every day is another opportunity to see or photography something special," she said. WATCH: Boity Thulo's heated altercation during Instagram Live goes viral

Boity during her holiday in Greece. Image: Instagram / boity Boity Thulo has gone viral after a clip of a verbal altercation between herself and a group of unidentified women during her holiday in Barcelona surfaced online. The incident, which took place during an Instagram Live session, shows the media personality in a heated argument with what appears to be a group of unknown women. The cause of the blow-up isn't clear, as the video posted on TikTok and X does not show what led to the confrontation. In the clip, an agitated Boity is seen swearing and hurling insults. At one point, she turns to the camera and says, 'Now they're laughing. Stupid a** b**ch.' She continues, 'I hate white women because they're stupid.' Towards the end of the snippet, captioned 'Boity not having it @Barcelona', she seems to calm down but expresses her frustration, saying she didn't do anything wrong. While the footage doesn't reveal what triggered the argument, several comments under the video, posted by TikTok user @ offer some context. One viewer claimed, 'Apparently, the[y] told her to shoosh while she was live letting us know about Barcelona and that p**sed her off.' Another person, who said they had watched the live session in full, wrote: 'I was watching that live from start to finish, those white people literally aggrivated [her] to be honest and she tried to avoid it but they kept talking and that time they are behind her teling her to shush while there's music and people talking too is mad disrespect and we all know what that is.' Meanwhile, another TikToker felt Boity's response was unwise: 'Everyone thinks she did good if there's a Karen do not react or respond because that's what EXACTLY they want and you'll get even more mad when they laugh that's why is best to keep calm knowing very well you want to drag them.' Just a few weeks ago, Boity had been sharing glimpses of her holiday in Santorini, Greece, as well as her trip to Paris.
