Modi renews ties with Maldives with offers of infra projects, funds

Observer2 days ago
MALE: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a visit to the Maldives on Saturday, renewing ties by offering infrastructure projects and vital financial assistance to the cash-strapped Indian Ocean nation. Regional powerhouse India had been concerned that its small, yet strategically located neighbour was drifting towards the orbit of its rival China following the 2023 election of President Mohamed Muizzu on an anti-India platform. Since coming to office, Muizzu has secured the withdrawal of a small contingent of Indian military personnel who operated search-and-rescue aircraft in the archipelago. But he has since toned down his anti-India rhetoric and on Friday he touted the two nations' collaboration on security and trade.
'India has long stood as the Maldives' closest and most trusted partner', Muizzu said in a banquet speech alongside Modi, whom he met with twice last year. 'We deeply value the friendship of India and are grateful for the timely assistance your country has extended to us in moments of need', Muizzu added.
Shortly after his arrival on Friday, Modi unveiled a $565 million credit line for the Maldives, which is facing a severe foreign exchange shortage despite its thriving tourism industry. India also reduced annual repayments of an earlier credit line from $51 million to $29 million and the two sides discussed a potential free-trade agreement.
Muizzu said the new credit line would bolster the Maldives' security forces and improve healthcare, housing and education.
During his two-day trip, Modi also inaugurated a new defence ministry headquarters and several India-funded infrastructure projects, including roads and a 4,000-unit housing scheme. Modi's visit had set 'a clear path for the future of Maldives-India relations', Muizzu wrote on X on Saturday as the Indian leader left the capital Male after 60th Independence Day celebrations. 'Our relationship continues to grow, shaped by people-to-people ties and cooperation in various sectors', Modi wrote in his own post on X. 'India remains committed to supporting the aspirations of the Maldivian people'.
Known for its luxury tourism and pristine beaches, the Maldives is also a geopolitical hotspot, with key global shipping lanes passing through its 1,192 islands, stretching across 800 kilometres of the equator. China and India are the Maldives' two largest bilateral lenders.
India remains apprehensive about China's growing presence in the Indian Ocean, particularly in the Maldives and neighbouring Sri Lanka. Global east-west shipping lanes pass through the nation's chain of 1,192 tiny coral islands, stretching around 800 kilometres across the equator. India's government has traditionally regarded the Maldives, along with Sri Lanka, to be within its sphere of influence. — AFP

India Inc's revenue grew tepid 4-6% YoY in April-June: Crisil

New Delhi: India Inc's revenue likely grew a modest 4-6 per cent year-on-year in the April-June quarter of this current fiscal, slowing from 7 per cent growth in the previous two quarters, due to sluggish performance by the power, coal, information technology (IT) services and steel sectors, which collectively account for a third of the revenue, according to Crisil. Crisil reached this revenue estimate after analysing over 600 companies. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) likely rose 4 per cent year-on-year. However, the EBITDA margin likely fell 10-30 basis points (bps), weighed down by IT services, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and pharmaceuticals, the rating agency said. Pushan Sharma, Director, Crisil Intelligence, asserted that the early onset of monsoon and lingering geopolitical uncertainties are expected to have materially impacted some sectors in April-June. "To wit, the rains-induced cooler summer culled demand for electricity. Consequently, the power sector's revenue is seen declining 8 per cent on-year. The lower demand also pushed down spot prices of electricity, and led to a 2-3 per cent lower demand for coal," Sharma said. "On the other hand, geopolitical uncertainties impacted the IT services sector, where revenue growth is seen flat on-year due to project delays stemming from tariff worries, which led to a slowdown in activity." The steel sector's revenue is expected to have grown a moderate 1-3 per cent year-on-year, due to planned maintenance shutdowns at major steel mills and a 2-4 per cent year-on-year decline in prices. The auto sector's revenue is foreseen rising 4 per cent year-on-year, owing to higher retail sales, partially offset by high inventory. An increase in prices, stemming from changes in the product mix and higher export realisations, likely helped revenue grow. Despite no significant increase in the Union Budget allocation for the construction sector, its revenue is expected to rise 6 per cent year-on-year, as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies benefited from a low base effect caused by disruptions from the general elections in the first quarter of the last fiscal year. Five sectors -- pharmaceuticals, telecom services, organised retail, aluminium and airline -- likely drove revenue growth, Crisil said. Revenue for pharmaceuticals is expected to increase by 9-11 per cent year-on-year, surpassing corporate India's revenue growth over the past 10 quarters, driven by strong export demand and a stable domestic market. Telecom services revenue is expected to grow 12 per cent year-on-year, fueled by higher realisations of 11 per cent due to costlier subscription plans. Organised retail revenue is likely to rise 15-17 per cent, led by the value fashion and food and grocery segments. Airline revenue is expected to rise 15 per cent year-over-year, driven by a 10-12 per cent increase in volume due to expanded supply resulting from reduced aircraft groundings and the addition of new aircraft. Elizabeth Master, Associate Director, Crisil Intelligence, said, "The top 10 sectors, which collectively account for over 70 per cent of India Inc's revenue, likely showed a mixed trend in the Ebitda margin. While the margin rose for the power, cement, steel, telecom services, construction and aluminium sectors, it likely declined for IT services, automobile, FMCG and pharmaceuticals."

India's industrial output to stay weak in the near term

New Delhi: India's industrial outlook is expected to remain weak in the near term due to the above-normal monsoon, mining and electricity output are expected to stay subdued, according to a report by ICICI Bank Additionally, the report mentioned that the ongoing geopolitical developments are affecting manufacturing exports at a time when urban demand is already underperforming. It stated, "With monsoon rainfall continuing to be above normal, mining and electricity output is likely to remain muted in the near future. Manufacturing performance too is likely to be lackluster amidst geopolitical developments and its impact on manufacturing exports when urban demand is under-performing." India's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by just 1.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in June 2025. This is the lowest growth recorded since August 2024. As a result, the average IIP growth in the first quarter of FY26 (April to June) stands at 1.9 per cent, a sharp drop from 5.5 per cent in the same period last year (Q1FY25). What is more concerning is the slowdown in sequential momentum. The IIP contracted by 2.7 per cent in June 2025 compared to the previous month. This is worse than the 2.4 per cent contraction in June last year. June also marks the second month in Q1FY26 and the third time in 2025 when IIP momentum has turned negative, raising worries of a credible slowdown in industrial activity. The mining sector dragged the overall index lower, with a sharp contraction of 8.7 per cent YoY in June. This is the sector's weakest performance in nearly five years. The poor showing is largely due to early and excessive monsoon rainfall as well as the base effect. Electricity output also fell by 2.6 per cent YoY in June, adding to the downward pressure. On the positive side, manufacturing sector output grew by 3.9 per cent YoY in June, helping to hold up the overall index. The growth was mainly supported by the production of fabricated and base metals. For the full quarter, manufacturing grew by 3 per cent YoY, compared to the overall IIP growth of 2 per cent. Consumer non-durables declined for the fifth straight month, contracting by 0.4 per cent YoY. Output of consumer durables and capital goods also remained soft, indicating weak urban demand and low private investment. Overall, the data pointed to a slowdown in industrial growth, with weather disruptions, weak demand, and global uncertainties playing a major role.

AI and machine learning jobs rise by 42 per cent YoY in June: Dept of Economic Affairs

New Delhi: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning roles recorded a significant 42 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in June 2025, highlighted the Monthly Economic Review released by the Department of Economic Affairs. The report also stated that hiring in Global Capability Centres (GCCs) also rose by 9 per cent YoY, reflecting India's expanding role in global services delivery. It stated, "AI and machine learning roles saw 42 per cent YoY growth." The report further highlighted that fresher hiring witnessed a notable 11 per cent YoY rise in June 2025, pointing to improved employment opportunities for new entrants. The overall labour market remained steady, with white-collar hiring showing a strong rebound, supported by a double-digit growth on a yearly basis. Formal job creation continued to gain momentum, with the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) recording an all-time high in net member additions during May 2025. The EPFO added 20.06 lakh members in May, the highest monthly figure since it began tracking payroll data in April 2018. The department also cited findings from the Naukri JobSpeak June 2025 report, which confirmed a revival in India's white-collar job market. The hiring index rose to 2,854 in June 2025, registering a 10.5 per cent YoY increase in hiring activity across sectors, cities, and experience levels. The rise in hiring was led by the insurance sector, which saw a 32 per cent YoY jump. It was followed by hospitality and travel at 21 per cent, BPO and ITES at 19 per cent, real estate at 16 per cent, oil and gas/power at 15 per cent, healthcare at 11 per cent, and education and FMCG at 10 per cent. India's manufacturing and services sectors also continued to contribute to job creation. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) employment sub-index stayed in the expansionary zone for the 16th consecutive month. While manufacturing employment growth increased, the services sector saw a slight easing from the record levels achieved in May 2025. An analysis of EPFO's new subscriber data for May 2025 showed that 59.5 per cent of new members were in the 18-25 age group, 22.8 per cent were aged 26-35, and 16.6 per cent were over 35. This indicates that a large portion of the organised workforce is made up of young adults, primarily first-time job seekers. The report concluded that the increase in formal job creation and workforce participation reflects the consistent efforts by the government to generate employment opportunities for the country's aspiring workforce.
