SZA proves Glastonbury flop was a fluke but still dwarfed by Kendrick Lamar
Having seen the Kill Bill hitmaker fail to make an impact on the Pyramid Stage, the Grand National Tour announcement admittedly left me a little apprehensive.
How could she match up to the Humble legend, whose own Glastonbury headliner slot was met with rapturous applause? But SZA held her own, for the most part.
Splitting their sets back and forth was the perfect way to make sure the energy kept flowing in Tottenham Stadium.
First up was Kendrick, opening the show with a string of energy boosting tracks like Squabble Up and TV On (cut teasingly just before the crowd could scream 'Mustard').
SZA's introduction prompted huge applause from the crowd but this adoration couldn't quite last her entire performance. While the Kiss Me More singer has some stunning vocals and catchy tunes, being K Dot's counterpart didn't serve her well.
Kendrick is simply an absolute juggernaut on stage. It's hard to imagine anyone being able to match him in sheer presence — the stadium came alive every time he walked out.
It didn't help that SZA seemed to take a minute (or 30) to warm to the gig, choosing not to interact with fans until much later and only really letting her playful personality shine in moments when they were both on stage.
Her early sections opted for set pieces over movement around the walkway, and this was unfortunately to her detriment, putting up barriers between herself and the audience.
This mirrors her choices at Glastonbury and we all remember how that went. As the London night two gig went on, the clunky sets cleared and SZA appeared to relax into it.

For many fans, her input has sadly been overlooked. The might of Kendrick, especially after his explosive fame after his viral Drake beef, cannot be ignored.
And it's not just in his lyrics that he's slamming his rival; according to Viagogo, 47% more global fans searched for tickets to Kendrick than Drake, who headlined Wireless.
The difference in numbers could have reportedly filled the O2 Arena 10 times over. Ouch.
The weight of this feud could be felt as the entire stadium shouted 'a minor' during Not Like Us, a volume only reached when we finally got to shout 'mustard' later in the gig.
It's no surprise then that SZA couldn't quite match Kendrick's presence, although her popularity is rising with her page views tripling on the day the UK tour was announced compared to the day before.
Despite her own sections falling short of Kendrick's, their few duets were really where the collaborative tour concept shone.
All The Stars was a visual highlight of the show, with the duo elevated on platforms singing to a room lit with tiny stars (also known as phone torches).
SZA and Kendrick have an undeniable musical chemistry, as well as an onstage ease with each other that only adds to the harmony. Once you've seen them on stage together, you're left wondering why they ever perform apart.
Aside from the sheer dominance of Dot, the show was surprisingly let down by the staging, which remained simple other than the occasional car and a ride-on giant ant (named Anthony).
My main gripe is that several songs were sung at the very back of the stage, between the screens. This meant large chunks of songs were blocked from view if you were on either side of the stage.
Considering how much money fans have coughed up, to be left watching some songs mainly on a screen is a little disappointing, especially when they could have easily been brought forward into view.
This aside, the dancers were some of the best I've seen. Throughout the show they were completely in sync — a truly precision performance, which was never thrown off by the copious amounts of pyrotechnics. More Trending
Overall, the tour delivers on what it promises: a solid selection of Kendrick and SZA's biggest tracks with some incredible duets.
It almost feels as if the timing is wrong as the Peekaboo rapper is too big post-Super Bowl, while his duet partner has not yet come into her own.
There's an undeniable chemistry here, and they put out incredible performances but it's impossible to ignore the gulf in energy between the two artists.
Ultimately, this was the Kendrick Tour, and SZA was sadly left playing second fiddle. Still, it was leaps and bounds ahead of her Glastonbury set, so don't count her out of this race.

EastEnders star confirms different side to Oscar as things take a turn
Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier) is set to do something 'awful' to Peter Beale (Thomas Law) in EastEnders next week. The newcomer has made quite the impact on Albert Square and viewers alike ever since he arrived in the BBC One soap last week. Sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) was forced to take him in after being released from a three-month stretch in a young offenders institute, where he'd spent time for joyriding. Their mum Tanya (Jo Joyner) had made it clear that he wasn't welcome to return to her house as a result of the dodgy characters he was hanging around with. When Oscar tipped off the police about their involvement in the car robbery, they attempted to petrol bomb his property, mistakenly targeting the neighbours instead. Despite his attempts to escape his brutish mates, they've tracked him down to Walford and are seeking revenge. 'Oscar feels threatened as Mike (Tai Hilferink) is a serious guy who doesn't seem to care about getting caught or the consequences,' actor Pierre told us. 'Since he arrived in the Square, Oscar has been all fun and games, but you'll see another side of him this week because Mike wants to make him suffer for what he's done!' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video And Pierre's right – next week's episodes see him launch an attack on an apparent intruder, believing it's Mike. Lauren learns that the thug has been threatening Oscar, and has left a knife as a way of threatening him. She reckons that their their uncle Jack (Scott Maslen) should be alerted for protection. 'Oscar believes getting Jack involved will only make things worse because if Mike finds out that there's a policeman in his family, he'll be even more on [his] case,' Pierre explains. 'I think that because Oscar is a smooth talker and he's been getting himself out of tight spots all his life, he believes he can do it again…' Things soon kick off, and Jack's forced to intervene. Lauren gives her brother a final warning, but that night, his paranoia intensifies when he hears a noise coming from the hallway. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Sneaking up on a hooded figure, he goes in to attack – unaware that it's actually Peter Beale (Thomas Law) in his dressing gown. 'It's so awful for Oscar when he realises that he's done this to Peter, who has been kind enough to take him in. More Trending 'Oscar plays lots of games with people, but deep down, he'll do anything for the people he cares for, and Peter has become one of those people, so this is awful.' And, despite Oscar receiving his marching orders, Pierre reckons there could be one saving grace. Coronation Street character sacked as boss takes action
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Carl Webster and Kevin Webster (Jonathan Howard and Michael Le Vell) both recently made shocking discoveries about each other in Coronation Street. Kevin discovered that Carl has been using his garage as a base for stealing cars, in cahoots with a woman called Fiona. He tried to stop Fiona making off with a vehicle, but became unwell and Glenda (Jodie Prenger) had to take him to hospital. Kevin has been going through gruelling treatment for cancer, and of course the worry was that his collapse was related to his cancer. But when Carl got to the hospital and spoke to one of the doctors he was gobsmacked to learn that Kevin had been given the all-clear at his last appointment and is cancer free. Kevin has been letting his family think that he still has cancer, so Carl now had something on his brother that he could use to stop him telling the police about the stolen cars. The reason Kevin has been pretending to still have cancer is that he's secretly terrified that his wife Abi (Sally Carman) may be about to have an affair with Carl. His plan is that Abi won't leave him while she thinks he's still going through treatment, and he can use that time to make her fall in love with him again. In upcoming episodes Abi is angry with Carl for causing trouble with Kevin, and Carl has to bite his tongue to stop himself telling her about Kev's lies. But when Abi talks to Tyrone (Alan Halsall) about how to tell Kevin's son Jack (Kyran Bowes) that Kevin's treatment hasn't worked, Tyrone is forced to tell her that Kevin confessed to him a while ago that he's actually cancer-free. Abi is fuming and won't listen to Kevin's pleas that he only pretended about the cancer in order to save their marriage. It actually has the opposite effect and she goes straight off to find Carl, falling into his arms for a passionate kiss. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Much-loved Emmerdale legend attacked as Joe Tate revenge goes wrong
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) is desperate to prove to Kim Tate (Claire King) that he can be trusted. This is a big ask, given that only a short while ago in Emmerdale he was planning to drug her to help Crowley (James Hillier) steal all of her money. In coming episodes he's putting plans in motion to get Moira (Natalie J Robb)'s land to help build Kim's empire, but a beloved local resident ends up getting caught in the crossfire. Moira's farm is hanging in the balance after the disaster when slurry was released from the farm and contaminated the lake. Facing a very hefty fine, Moira fears she could lose her business altogether. Joe has been trying to take advantage of this predicament to get her to sign the land over to Kim. Kim herself has gone to Dubai, leaving the deal in Joe's hands and he knows this could be his one big chance to prove that he's someone she can depend on to get the job done. In upcoming episodes he warns Moira that he'll do whatever it takes to get their land, leaving Moira and Cain (Jeff Hordley) fuming. They try to reassure Kyle (Huey Quinn) and Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir) that they won't lose their home, but secretly they're worried. Later the boys hear a noise in the barn and investigate. They're shocked to see two masked teenagers inside, one of whom is April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan)'s friend Dylan (Fred Kettle). Kyle and Isaac are so shocked and frightened by discovering the masked teens that Kyle arms himself with a pitchfork and accidentally stabs Dylan in the leg before Moira arrives and scares the intruders away. Cain is convinced that Joe has put the teenagers up to this and it's part of his plan to harass them into giving up the land, and he reacts in traditional Cain style by wanting to go out and get instant revenge on Joe. Moira insists that they call the police instead, and PC Swirling (Andy Moore) duly turns up to investigate. He can't find anything to pin the incident on Joe, who naturally denies any involvement. Moira is seething with anger and frustration and goes to hit Joe. Unfortunately her back-hander accidentally catches poor Lydia (Karen Blick) instead. Bless her, missing for months and returns only to get walloped. 'Lydia jumps in front of her and gets punched in the ear which is quite horrific,' Natalie J Robb told us. 'I'm devastated that it's Lydia of all people. This is bound to cause more trouble between the Dingles.' Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Cain is worried that Lydia will press charges and has a word with her – and Sam is upset to think that Cain is issuing threats to Lydia. More Trending 'Sam doesn't like the fact that Lydia was threatened,' Natalie observed.
