Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry Scrap Musical ‘Golden' in Post-Production: ‘There Wasn't a Path Forward'
'Golden,' a musical inspired by the life of Pharrell Williams and directed by 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' filmmaker Michel Gondry, is being scrapped and will not be released by Universal, despite the film being in post-production and featuring a star-studded cast.
Williams and Gondry in a joint statement to IndieWire said that they mutually agreed they 'can't deliver this film,' and Variety, which first reported the news, added that it will not be released in any form or shopped by Universal to other buyers.

'When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn't a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned. We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we're disappointed, we can't deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon,' Williams and Gondry said in a statement.
'Golden,' originally titled 'Atlantis,' was a musical set during Williams' coming-of-age years in the 1970s growing up in Virginia Beach. It starred Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak, Jaboukie Young-White, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph in what would've been her first role since winning an Oscar for 'The Holdovers.' Universal had even set a release date of May 5.
While there's some recent horror stories of completed films never seeing the light of day, such as 'Coyote vs. Acme' or 'Batgirl,' those movies were shelved as tax write-offs by the studio rather than the creators. In this case, the creators themselves (Williams was a producer alongside Mimi Valdes and Gil Netter) are pulling the plug with the film already shot.
As a result, Variety reported that Universal is expected to swallow $20 million of production costs and that the film was in the early stages of post-production, meaning that it won't be completed. Variety added via sources that everyone involved has been paid for work completed.
Williams has a creative partnership with Universal, which set up and financed 'Golden.' He wrote 'Happy' for the 'Despicable Me' franchise, and Universal's specialized arm Focus Features last year released the documentary about his life, 'Piece by Piece,' which was animated entirely in Lego form. The movie made $10.6 million at the worldwide box office.
It's unclear what creatively about the movie could not be salvaged. Pharrell, while on the press tour for 'Piece by Piece,' said that while the documentary was about his life, 'Golden' was about his childhood neighborhood and that specifically it was a film that celebrated 'Black joy.'
'It's a coming-of-age story about self-discovery and pursuing your dreams, but it's so much more magical than that. It's a celebration of Black life, Black culture, and most importantly, Black joy,' he previously told Empire.
The Oscar-winning Gondry's next project is 'Maya, Give Me a Title,' which is screening at the Berlin Film Festival.

HBO's ‘Harry Potter' series reportedly casts Harry, Ron, Hermione
The spell has been cast, and so too have Harry, Ron and Hermione in HBO's new 'Harry Potter' series. Dominic McLaughlin will sport the lightning bolt scar as the titular chosen wizard, while Arabella Stanton — who recently starred as Matilda in the West End's production of 'Matilda: The Musical' — and Alastair Stout will round out the trio as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively, Variety reports. Also recently announced were the castings of John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The Hollywood Reporter first broke news of the show, based on J.K. Rowling's hit children's fantasy books, in early 2021. The show is expected to debut next year, with filming slated for this summer. The network has already promised 'a faithful adaptation of the beloved 'Harry Potter' books.' In April 2023, Bloomberg reported that Warner Bros. Discovery was 'close to a deal' enabling them to adapt each of the seven books for the small screen. Emmy experts predict Drama Series race: ‘Severance' out front, but watch out for ‘The Pitt'
As Emmy voting begins, can Severance hold onto its momentum as the Best Drama Series frontrunner, or might another show steal its thunder? Four top Emmy experts — Variety's Clayton Davis, The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg, Indiewire's Marcus Jones, Deadline's Pete Hammond — predict the race with moderator and Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum in our latest slugfest (watch above). "We have to talk about Severance — that's Apple's main play," says Jones. The sci-fi series has been the category's de facto leader all season long. HBO and Max have an incredible amount of product this year, he says, including The Pitt, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, Industry, and House of the Dragon. He also declares Hulu's apocalyptic series Paradise to be "one of the big newcomers" of the year, with "an amazing performance from Sterling K. Brown." "That's a real wild card to me because, out in the real world, everybody's watching it, but it's TBD who's watching it in the TV Academy." Hulu "There are a lot of good possibilities in the drama series category," says Hammond. The Handmaid's Tale ended its final season amid "everything going on in the world, and seemingly this show has turned into a documentary, ... Handmaid's Tale is now true life!" As for The Pitt, he thinks it's "so hard to watch" because of all the realistic medical stories, and wishes there were commercials. "I need a break [from all the blood]." Davis is already looking ahead to the Emmy ceremony, claiming, "Win-wise, I think this is Severance vs. The Pitt for the rest of the year. I think The Pitt is so Homeland Season 1 coded. I want to know how many nominations it gets before I can really cross over and say it can do it." He also creates a stir when he mentions how Pedro Pascal should drop down to supporting for The Last of Us because it's "more appropriate" after what happens to his character in Season 2. As for shows that people are actually watching "in the real world," Birnbaum singles out Matlock, with its star Kathy Bates on the cusp of being the oldest winner ever for Best Drama Actress.
