WhatsApp could soon add an AI feature to summarise your unread chats: Here's how it works

Minta day ago
WhatsApp is bringing yet another AI-powered feature to enhance the flow of conversations and save users time. The personal messaging app will leverage Meta AI's capabilities to allow users to get a gist of their unread messages without compromising the privacy of their conversations.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is looking to implement a new feature that will allow users to generate a summary of specific conversations. Unlike the existing message summaries feature, the new Quick Recap option will provide a more detailed summary of unread messages in selected chats.
Quick Recap will save users from scrolling through long threads by presenting a concise overview of what has been discussed, using Meta AI's capabilities.
While the Message Summaries feature worked with only one chat at a time, users will be able to summarise up to five conversations simultaneously with Quick Recap. To use it, users can select the chats they wish to summarise, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and click on 'Quick Recap'.
Similar to Message Summaries, WhatsApp will take advantage of Meta Private Processing technology, ensuring that raw data never leaves the secure enclave in a readable form. It will use encryption and isolated computation to ensure that neither WhatsApp nor Meta has access to the original text or the generated recap.
This method allows WhatsApp to utilise in-house AI while prioritising user privacy and maintaining the sanctity of conversations.
Quick Recap will reportedly support summarising both individual and group chats. However, chats protected under 'Advanced Chat Privacy' will not be included in Quick Recap, respecting users who have chosen to exclude AI-powered features from specific conversations.
WABetaInfo spotted the Quick Recap feature in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.21.12. However, even beta testers would not have access to this feature for now given that it is still in development. The feature should slowly get rolled out to beta users with the upcoming updates, followed by a stable release for Android. Currently we don't have any clarity on when/if the new feature will come to the WhatsApp iOS app.

Soon, WhatsApp will show ads in Status page, promote business Channels

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out new ad formats: Status Ads and Promoted Channels (in beta) for iOS users, showing ads in the Updates tab of the app New Delhi WhatsApp is reportedly testing Status Ads and Promoted Channels for iOS users, introducing ad formats aimed at offering monetisation options for businesses and creators. According to a report by WABetainfo, these features are integrated within the Updates tab—keeping them separate from private chats, groups, and calls. Both features were previously tested on Android and now appear in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS version 25.20.10.78. Ads on WhatsApp: What is new Status Ads As per the report, Status Ads appear between user-generated status updates and are clearly labeled as 'Sponsored.' Businesses can share promotional content in a familiar swipeable format. Users can view these ads like regular statuses, with options to skip, block, or report them. WhatsApp says these ads are designed to integrate seamlessly into the Status section without disrupting the experience. The company also clarified that ads are shown using minimal data such as language, region, and previous ad interactions. Promoted Channels Promoted Channels allow brands and creators to highlight their public channels in WhatsApp's channel directory. These channels appear higher in search results and are marked with a 'Promoted' tag. For example, a brand or local business can pay to have its channel appear higher in recommendations, increasing its chances of attracting followers. User control and privacy Users will receive a banner when the features go live on their accounts. An Activity Report will also be available in account settings, listing all viewed ads, advertisers, and allowing users to block or report any of them. The report stated that WhatsApp has emphasised that no personal messages or phone numbers are shared with advertisers. Users can optionally link their WhatsApp account with Meta's Accounts Center to enable ad personalisation. This setting can be changed by the user anytime, although it is disabled by default.

Apple's foldable iPhone may not be much different from Samsung Fold: Report

Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch its first foldable iPhone model by the end of next year. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, as cited by Digit, the Cupertino-based technology giant is preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market in 2026 with a book-style iPhone fold — similar in design to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched by Samsung earlier this month. Rather than introducing a radically new approach, Apple is expected to refine existing foldable technology. This includes reducing the visibility of the screen crease on the main display and introducing a more durable hinge mechanism. Additionally, Apple's upcoming iOS version — likely called iOS 27 — is expected to include features optimised for the foldable display experience. The report suggests that the move is seen as a strategic response to rivals like Samsung, Huawei, and Honor, who have already gained ground in the foldable segment, especially in markets like China where demand continues to grow. Gurman also suggested that Apple's foldable iPhone could be priced around $2,000 (approximately Rs 1,72,580). Apple iPhone fold: What to expect Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously stated that the foldable iPhone could have a sleek design, measuring between 9mm to 9.5mm when folded, and just 4.5mm to 4.8mm when unfolded. It's expected to feature a 5.5-inch external display and a 7.8-inch internal screen with minimal crease visibility. These details were echoed by analyst Jeff Pu, who also noted that the outer screen may have a resolution of 2088 x 1422 pixels, while the inner display could be 2713 x 1920 pixels. Samsung Display is reportedly supplying the OLED panels for the device. In terms of optics, the foldable iPhone is said to sport a quad-camera setup: two 48MP rear sensors and two 24MP front cameras — one on each display. While the exact camera configuration is not confirmed, Apple could opt for an ultra-wide or telephoto lens as the secondary rear camera. The front-facing cameras are expected to sit inside hole-punch cutouts. Apple may also ditch Face ID in favour of Touch ID for this model, with the fingerprint scanner likely embedded in the side-mounted power button.

WhatsApp Ads Are Now Showing Up In Status Updates And Channels For These Users

Last Updated: WhatsApp ads are coming for your updates and channels but it will never intrude your chat space, the messaging platform has said earlier. WhatsApp confirmed ads are coming in the form of status updates and for promoted channels. And now we have started seeing signs of how this new version of the messaging app will work out in the long term. The latest Android beta update is the first version to come with WhatsApp ads, taking it one step closer to other Meta products like Instagram and Facebook. WhatsApp announced ads back in June this year, and assured users that it will never invade their chat space/feed with ads. The details about the new update and WhatsApp ads roll out has been shared by WaBetaInfo in a post recently. The tipster says users are seeing Status update ads in the beta version 2.25.21.11 that is available for select beta testers for now. Status update becomes the main hub for ads on WhatsApp and as you scroll through updates from different contacts, the messaging app will place an ad with a sponsored post label. This is similar to how you see ads between Stories on Instagram. We independently checked for ads in the Status update with WhatsApp beta version but it seems the roll out even for the beta testers is being limited to some users for now. WhatsApp is offering ads for channel subscriptions, promoted channels and Status updates. Status updates have become popular among WhatsApp users and the platform clearly sees a way out to push ads and keep its user base satisfied. WhatsApp says ads will not come where your personal chats are located but going by the earlier promises and claims made by Meta, we cannot discount that changing in the near future. WhatsApp also assures that it will never sell/share your phone number to advertisers and your chats or calls will never become part of its exercise to push personalised ads. Having said that, WhatsApp is going to use data like country, language to change the dynamics of its platform and it is now up to the people to decide if their favourite messaging app is worth the hassle anymore. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 10:25 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
