Aldi's new £1.69 drink helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar

Daily Mirror13-06-2025
Research suggests that adding Aldi's latest product to your diet could benefit your cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and overall gut health
Aldi shoppers can keep their cholesterol and blood sugar levels down thanks to a health-enhancing beverage that's hitting shelves. The budget supermarket is now selling a kombucha drink, which is also known for its immune system and gut health-boosting properties.
Priced at £1.69, shoppers can snap up a 330ml bottle of The Juice Company Kombucha in stores. The nutritional drink is available in three flavours - including passionfruit, ginger and lemon and wild berry.

Known for its health benefits, Kombucha contains live cultures that promote a healthy gut. According to Aldi, the drink combines "a tropical tang with bubbly refreshment."

The retailer says The Juice Company Passionfruit Kombucha is "bursting with a sweet yet tart flavour", and the ginger and lemon flavour provides "a warming immune system boost along with a zesty kick of citrus to offer a refreshing pick-me-up."
For shoppers looking for something sweet yet natural, The Juice Company Wild Berry Kombucha "brings a symphony of delicious berries," according to Aldi. The new kombuca drink follows Aldi's £2.29 Kefir Frozen Yoghurt, which comes in chocolate, mango and passionfruit, and strawberry, which is packed with calcium and protein to "boost gut health and wellbeing."
Kombucha is a type of tea that has been fermented, which makes it a good source of probiotics, which have many health benefits. Aldi's The Juicy Company Kombucha drinks are available in stores now.
How can kombucha can boost your health?
Kombucha made from green tea may offer many of the same health benefits as green tea itself, such as weight loss and blood sugar management. According to Healthline, kombucha is also rich in tea polyphenols and acetic acid, which have both been shown to suppress the growth of undesirable bacteria and yeasts.
It has been shown to improve LDL and HDL cholesterol levels in rats and protect against heart disease. Kombucha also improved several markers of diabetes in rats, including blood sugar levels.

Kombucha is made by adding specific strains of bacteria, yeast, and sugar to black or green tea and then allowing it to ferment for a week or more. During this process, bacteria and yeast form a mushroom-like film on the surface of the liquid. This is why kombucha is also known as "mushroom tea."
The fermentation process produces acetic acid (also found in vinegar) and several other acidic compounds, trace levels of alcohol, and gases that make it carbonated. A large number of bacteria also grow in the mixture. Kombucha contains several species of lactic acid bacteria that may have a probiotic function.

Probiotics provide your gut with healthy bacteria. These bacteria may improve many aspects of health, including digestion, inflammation, and even weight loss.
Kombucha made from green tea contains many of the same plant compounds and presumably boasts some of the same benefits.
Studies show that drinking green tea regularly or taking supplements containing green tea extract can increase the number of calories you burn, reduce belly fat, improve cholesterol levels, help with blood sugar control, and more.

I'm a big fan of Vitamin C skincare for a fresh glow, so when I saw that Aldi was officially bringing back its much-loved Vitamin C skincare line, I was tempted. At £4.99 it was hard to resist. But I'm nothing if not loyal, and my favourite cleanser (Superfacialist Cleansing Oil if you're asking) and exfoliator (LUSH Bright and Beautiful) are pretty special. But, with hero ingredients like Vitamin C, PHA, Hyaluronic Acid, Collagen, and Caffeine, and - of course Vitamin C - Lacura is billed as delivering a top-tier skincare routine without the premium price tag. Showing a characteristic lack of restraint in the middle aisle, I gave the new Aldi range a try, and the results were illuminating, to say the least. ♬ original sound - Frankie Seamark @frankieseamark Made the most of the evening sun and went out for a lovely, healthy picnic after dinner 🧺 Vitamin C is essential in our diet it boosts immunity, supports collagen production, and helps our skin glow from the inside out ✨ but remember, it's just as powerful in skincare too 🧡 Aldi's new Lacura skincare range, landing 24th July 🧴AD @Aldi UK #ALDIUK Lacura Vitamin C Brightening Daily Cleanser (£4.99, 125ml) I started off trying this cleanser, with its soft orange scent (my little girls say it's a double for Starburst orange sweets). Formulated with PHA, orange fruit water and orange essential oil, the results weren't as dramatic as Superfacialist, but it left me with a brightened complexion. Lacura Vitamin C Brightening Gel Cream (£4.99, 50ml) Next up, I tried this gel cream, with its potent 15% Vitamin C (the equivalent of 38 large oranges!), alongside PHA and Hyaluronic Acid. The serum goes on evenly and smooths, protects, and improves skin texture. Packed with brightening pigments, it reduces dark spots for an instantly radiant glow. Aldi Lacura Vitamin C skincare range (Image: Aldi) Lacura Vitamin C Brightening Eye Cream (£4.99, 15ml) Vitamin C is the top-performing ingredient in skincare, and this multipurpose Lacura Vitamin C Brightening Gel Cream, enriched with Rose of Winter extract, goes on smoothly to help fight the daily effects of pollution as well as improving the appearance of wrinkles. Lacura Vitamin C Brightening Serum (£4.99, 30ml) This was probably my favourite product in the range, packed with collagen, caffeine and colour-correcting pigments to instantly brighten dark circles and smooth fine lines. And how do they compare to pricier brands? Superfacialist Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil, normally £14 (currently £9.33 at Boots) For scientific purposes, I reviewed my old favourites too. This, for me, is the ultimate Vitamin C cleanser. It looks like an oil, but it doesn't leave skin greasy. Despite its nourishing olive, grapeseed and rosehip oils, it transforms itself on contact with water, into a light milky texture, which gently dissolves face and eye make-up and removes daily impurities. It's expensive, but oh so good. LUSH Bright and Beautiful Vit C Exfoliating Face Scrub, £16 It's not the cheapest, but this scrub is a miracle worker. Lush's most invigorating scrub is made with charcoal, grapefruit and 10% Vitamin C to keep dullness at bay. It buffs and brightens, leaving skin incredibly glowy and can be used as a mask or cleanser. Suitable for complexions that like a more vigorous polish, it is quite simply radiance in a pot. Recommended reading: So, did Aldi's Vitamin C skincare range beat products that are three times the price? Honestly, the pricier options do have some advantages - they work more quickly and feel more luxurious. Both give an instant Vitamin C glow, where the Lacura products take a bit longer to see a difference. But, the Lacura Vitamin C range is excellent, and a really affordable alternative to luxury brands. Plus, it offers the eye gel and serum, which there's definitely space for on my skincare shelf. At under a fiver, they are a serious bargain, so I'll gladly rebuy them all, and keep an illuminated glow right through the winter (I'll be twinkling like the Christmas tree come December). Plus, with all that Vitamin C, I'll never get scurvy.

Brits warned to 'remove scent' from home as 'swarm of insects' sweep UK

The annual 'flying ant day' phenomenon is set to return to Britain and Ireland as warmer weather persists, with UK households told to remove the scent in their homes UK households are being advised to "remove the scent" from their homes as swarms of flying ants are set to invade during the warmer weather. The annual ' flying ant day ' is making its return to Britain and Ireland. ‌ Healthline advises: "Ants leave a scented pheromone trail behind when they walk. This acts as a map of food sources. Using glass cleaner may help remove the scent and deter the ants from re-entering your home. Mix glass cleaning spray with liquid detergent like dish soap into a clean spray bottle. Spray the mixture on areas where ants seem to enter from or congregate around." ‌ The event sees winged black garden ants, Lasius niger, take to the skies for their 'nuptial flight', which is part of their mating process. Healthline further suggests: "After spraying, wipe down the area leaving a light residue. Repeat the above steps as often as needed." ‌ 'I clean five-star hotels for a living – real secret to sparkling floors is 20p' The phenomenon usually happens in July or August when conditions are hot and humid with little wind, ideally around 25C, reports Birmingham Live. Good Housekeeping recommends: "Flying ants respond strongly to scent‐based disruption. So natural ingredients such as essential oils can be an excellent repellent. Mix water, a splash of dish soap and 5–10 drops of peppermint, rosemary or citronella essential oil. ‌ "Spray around windows, doors, lights and damp areas to deter them." Meanwhile, the NHS reassures that ant bites are "generally harmless, although you'll probably feel a nip". Recently, there's been a spike in internet searches for Flying Ant Day, hinting that UK households are observing more of these insects around. A spokesperson from the RSB informed BBC News: "One of the primary findings from the survey was that there is certainly not one flying ant day; the frequency in which the flying ants appear changes every year and is dependent on weather." They added: "One garden may see flying ants one day, with neighbours seeing them weeks or even months later." With temperatures rising in the upcoming week, reaching as high as 31°C, it's crucial to keep our living spaces as clean and organised as possible. By doing so, it will stop unwanted guests from taking over and potentially hurting you. It might take some extra time from your schedules, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
