Complaint Filed Against Telangana Officers for Alleged Political Bias
The grievance alleges that both Chowhan and Hari Chandana publicly claimed that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government had not issued any ration cards in the past decade, which the complainant describes as a 'blatant lie'. The complaint points out that official records indicate that over 6.47 lakh ration cards were issued during the BRS tenure. It further criticises the officers for perpetuating misinformation at an event attended by local political figures, including a minister and mayor.
The complaint highlights serious concerns about the distribution process of ration cards, suggesting that bribes of ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per person are being solicited to facilitate the granting of such cards. It calls for a comprehensive inquiry by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau into these allegations and accuses the officers of contributing to a lack of transparency in the system.
Legal violations highlighted in the complaint include breaches of AIS Conduct Rules, as well as potential infractions under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The complainant has requested immediate disciplinary action against both officers, the registration of criminal cases for their allegedly false statements, and a public apology to rectify the misinformation provided to the public.
The incident has raised questions about the expected neutrality and integrity of civil servants in India, with the complainant urging a thorough investigation to preserve the credibility of public institutions and maintain the principles of democracy. The complaint has also been forwarded to the Department of Personnel & Training for consideration in the officers' performance evaluations.

Two married women stabbed to death in two incidents in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad:Two women were murdered by their husbands in separate incidents in Ghaziabad. Police in Ankur Vihar arrested a 28-year-old for allegedly murdering his wife on Tuesday. (Sakib Ali/HT Photo) A 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed to death his 26-year-old wife at their house in Ankur Enclave on late Monday evening over suspicion of an affair, the officials said Tuesday. An FIR was lodged by the victim's father and subsequently the accused was arrested Tuesday morning from Lal Bagh, said police. The woman, identified as Kavita Gupta, 26, was a native of Sultanpur, while the husband, Sumit Gupta, 28, is from Aligarh. According to police, the couple got married in December, 2023, but two months later, the husband was jailed for cheating by personation and forgery charges. 'He was in jail for about one-and-half-year and later got bailed out. He was suspicious that in his absence his wife was seeing some other man which led to frequent fights. He finally attacked his wife with a knife around 7.30pm on Monday,' said Gyan Prakash Rai, ACP of the Ankur Vihar circle. The woman suffered about 6-7 stabbing wounds, including two on her head, said the police. Babita Kumari, the victim's sister said, ''My brother-in-law stepped out of jail about two months ago and would often beat up my sister. Around 4pm on Monday, she again called up our mother and said her husband was sharpening a knife. We didn't imagine things would turn out so tragic.' In another incident in Modinagar, a man allegedly murdered his wife after slashing her throat in their house at Gadana on Tuesday morning. The deceased, identified as Swati Kumar, 25, and accused identified as Jitendra Kumar, 27, got married about three years ago, police said. Police said her in-laws had been demanding dowry. 'They (her in-laws, primarily referring to the woman's husband) slashed the throat of my niece late Monday night and went absconding. The two were married for about four years and have a minor child,' said Omkar, victim's maternal uncle. The police said the victim's throat was slit and signs of strangulation was observed. 'The woman's tongue was protruding and throat was slashed. There were more injury marks on her body,' said Amit Saxena, ACP of the Modinagar circle, adding that the autopsy will reveal the exact cause of death. An FIR was registered against the accused and the in-laws under BNS section for dowry death at Modinagar police station, police said and added that teams are deployed to nab the suspects.

Showroom owner held after four staffers die in west Delhi fire, families allege cover-up
A day after four staffers died in a fire at an electronics showroom in west Delhi's Raja Garden, police on Tuesday arrested the owner, Manas Mahajan, for alleged negligence that led to five people being trapped on the second floor of the building. Mahajan owns Mahajan Electronics and its other branches across Delhi. He has just been booked under BNS 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire) and 106 (negligence leading to death), police said, adding that he has not yet been produced before a magistrate. Officials said that the building did not have a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as mandated under Delhi fire safety norms. The fire broke out around 3pm on Monday on the first floor of the four-storey showroom, which was stacked with fridges, washing machines and other appliances. The victims were identified as Aayushi Gupta, 21; Payal Singh, 20; Amandeep Kaur, 22; Ravi Kumar, 28; and Sandeep, 25, police said. They were on the second floor having lunch when they got trapped. Police said there was no fire extinguishing equipment on the second floor. Officials from the Delhi Fire Services added that the building did not have a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as mandated under Delhi fire safety norms. A senior police officer probing the case said the victims were seated in a narrow corridor when the fire began. 'When the fire broke out, they tried to rush downstairs, but there was only one exit, and it was blocked due to heavy smoke. The employees then rushed upstairs and tried to reach the terrace, but the door to the terrace was locked. Further, there were no windows on the entire floor. They tried to get help, but it got too late. We spoke to doctors who said the four persons who died suffered due to suffocation,' the officer said. The Delhi Fire Services confirmed the challenges during the rescue, noting that the building had only one entry point. 'We had to drill a hole in the building to reach the victims,' an official said, adding that the second floor was stacked with appliances and boxes, leaving no space to move. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said. DCP (West) Vichitra Veer confirmed Mahajan's arrest and said proceedings have been initiated against him. HT reached out to store staff and the owner, but staffers declined to comment, while the owner's family did not respond to calls. Meanwhile, families of the deceased alleged that the showroom staff misled them after the incident. Vandana Singh, sister of Payal Singh, said her 20-year-old sister had been the sole breadwinner since their father's death. 'She started working two months back. Had we known it was an unsafe place, we would have never sent her. I got a call around 6pm, hours after the incident took place. Two employees told me she was injured in a small accident... I finally found out about her death from the police. My mother kept praying for her survival. She is traumatised. What will we do now? Who will support us?' she said. Aayushi Gupta's family also levelled similar allegations. Her brother, Saurabh Gupta, told HT, 'She was only 21 years old. She worked in the accounting and sales department. We received a call around 6.30 pm about the incident. We were not told about the fire or her death. I went to the hospital and found that the company people had already identified her at the hospital, and the body was sent to the mortuary... We waited the entire night and saw her body on Tuesday… a day later. Staffers kept misleading us and told us that she got injured. If she had died, why didn't they tell us? They wanted to get her married, and she had joined the job to start saving for her wedding. The owner and senior management never came to talk to us.'

Andhra backs NDA's pick for V-P, Telangana backs Sudershan Reddy
Hyderabad: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the Vice-Presidential election CP Radhakrishnan has secured unanimous support from all political parties, including the opposition YSR Congress Party – in Andhra Pradesh. INDIA alliance Vice-Presidential candidate and former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy speaks to the media on his arrival at Delhi airport, in New Delhi on Tuesday. (Agency Photo) In Telangana, however, Radhakrishnan has got the support of only Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has eight Lok Sabha members, while the ruling Congress and its friendly party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), who together have 12 MPs, have pitched in their support for INDIA bloc candidate and retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy. The main opposition – Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) which has no Lok Sabha members but four Rajya Sabha MPs – has not spelt out its stand on whom to extend support in the Vice-Presidential elections – Radhakrishnan or Sudershan Reddy. 'We have not yet discussed the issue till now. Our party president and former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will take a call on the matter. It is too early to talk about it,' BRS spokesman and MLC Dasoju Sravan told HT. Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy sought to raise the Telangana sentiment to corner the BRS. 'The announcement of justice Sudarshan Reddy as the INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential candidate has brought pride to Telugu people, especially Telangana,' Reddy told reporters on Tuesday. Declaring Sudershan Reddy, who is a son of Telangana, born into a farming family and above political affiliations, as Vice-Presidential nominee was a matter of pride, he said. The chief minister appealed to Telugu people to take responsibility for ensuring justice Sudershan Reddy's victory. 'It is a proud moment that once again a Telugu has been declared a Vice-Presidential candidate of such stature. This is a time to rise above politics and stand united,' he said. Revanth Reddy urged leaders across party lines — including Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao, Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan, the Communist parties, and BJP MPs from both Telugu states — to extend their support to Sudershan Reddy. 'Justice Reddy is not a Congress candidate. He is a legal luminary proposed by the INDIA bloc, with no political affiliation, currently serving as chairman of an Independent Expert Committee,' the CM clarified. In Andhra Pradesh, the TDP and Jana Sena Party, which are part of the NDA, endorsed the candidature of Radhakrishnan. The TDP has 16 Lok Sabha members and two Rajya Sabha members, while Jana Sena has two Lok Sabha MPs. The BJP has three Lok Sabha members and two Rajya Sabha members from Andhra. Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan issued a statement welcoming the selection of Radhakrishnan as the NDA candidate for the Vice-Presidential elections, while a delegation of the TDP leaders led by state IT minister Nara Lokesh met Radhakrishnan in New Delhi and felicitated him. 'There is no ambiguity, only warmth, respect and resolve. The NDA stands united,' Lokesh said, after meeting Radhakrishnan along with senior TDP leaders and MPs. He praised Radhakrishnan's vast administrative experience as governor of several states, expressing confidence that his discipline, perseverance, and service-oriented leadership would inspire the younger generation and benefit the nation in the years ahead. Interestingly, the YSRCP, though it is not part of the NDA, extended support to Radhakrishnan. 'Our party president and former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy decided that we should support Radhakrishnan as he stands the better chances of winning. We cannot oppose a person just for the sake of opposition,' YSRCP parliamentary party leader YV Subba Reddy told HT. He said the NDA was first to reach out to the YSRCP seeking its support to Radhakrishnan. 'Union defence minister Rajnath Singh called Jagan personally and requested YSRCP support. It was a kind gesture and we have to reciprocate it,' Subba Reddy said. Currently, YSRCP holds seven Rajya Sabha and four Lok Sabha seats. Jagan's stance in this Vice-Presidential election may mark a decisive shift in future political alignments. Back in 2018, too, even though the TDP was part of the NDA, YSRCP had supported the NDA's decisions. The TDP subsequently exited the NDA alliance, and YSRCP, which came to power in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, maintained good relations with the NDA government. Until the 2024 elections, YSRCP supported NDA bills in Parliament unconditionally. 'Jagan still enjoys the indirect backing from the BJP, which has obviously kept him as an option in Andhra Pradesh. Right from the beginning, it has been going soft towards Jagan, because it doesn't want the Congress to resurrect in Andhra Pradesh,' political analyst and writer Ramesh Kandula said. Moreover, Jagan has been opposing the Congress since he came out of it and was jailed in the disproportionate assets case in 2012. Only a few days ago, Jagan made serious comments against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, refusing to support the latter's fight against alleged vote theft across the country. 'Rahul Gandhi has been in touch with Chandrababu Naidu on hotline regularly. So, the Congress is unreliable party,' he said. Since his sister YS Sharmila is heading the Congress in Andhra, taking a strong anti-YSRCP stand, he won't support the Congress-backed candidate in Vice-President elections, Kandula said.
