India, EU keen to complete FTA by end of this year: Jaishankar
Marseille [France], June 13 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday that India and EU have set the goal of trying to complete the Free Trade Agreement by end this year and noted that the negotiators and the stakeholders are reacting to a global environment where the importance of doing this FTA has become much more.
Jaishankar, who is in France as part of his three-nation visit, said India also seeks to conclude a defence and security partnership with the European Union.
'We are putting so much focus on Europe because we can see a quantum jump into multipolarity. There's a realisation in Europe that a lot of its problems and solutions will have to be analysed and thought through by Europe itself. Today's Europe is more self-aware, self-reliant and strategically autonomous, and will want to look for partners who can work with Europe in that respect... That gives an additional impetus to India-Europe relations, which were evolutionary, but I predict a very sharp acceleration in that,' he said
'In Brussels, we made strong progress in our Free Trade Agreement negotiations. We seek to conclude a defence and security partnership with the European Union. We are looking at a space agreement. We have individual agreements with the states of Europe on talent mobility. We are now trying to see if we can get across an understanding across the entire Union... There is a lot of discussion about connectivity because if you're going to do more business and we're all trying to de-risk and stabilise the global economy, connectivity is very much part of that conversation,' he added.
He spoke about the progress in FTA negotiations.
'We have set the goal of trying to complete it by this year. I'm told that half the chapters are done, and for the remaining half, considerable progress has been made. Our trade ministers have met 3 times in the last 6 weeks. We will see another round of meetings by the end of this month. There is a certain urgency and energy that is different. The negotiators and the stakeholders are reacting to a global environment where the importance of doing this FTA has become much more,' he added.
India and France have completed 25 years of strategic partnership. The bilateral relations with France are rooted in deep trust and commitment, and the two countries cooperate closely across all domains of strategic and contemporary relevance besides sharing similar outlook on many regional and global issues. India has distanced itself from a statement issued by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on the Israel-Iran conflict. In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday, India clarified that it did not participate in the discussions that led to the group's remarks. Maintaining its independent stance on the Israel-Iran conflict, India urged both Israel and Iran to use dialogue and diplomacy to work towards de-escalation of the situation. 'The SCO has issued a statement on recent developments between Israel and Iran. India's own position on the matter had been articulated by us on June 13, 2025, and remains the same. We urge that channels of dialogue and diplomacy be utilized to work towards de-escalation, and it is essential that the international community undertake endeavors in that direction,' the MEA said. The MEA stated that External Affairs Minister Jaishankar discussed recent developments between Israel and Iran with his Iranian counterpart yesterday, urging the avoidance of any escalatory steps and an early return to diplomacy. India disassociates itself from SCO statement on Iran-Israel tensions
New Delhi: India on Saturday disassociated itself from a statement by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) condemning Israel's military strikes on Iran, saying it was not involved in discussions on the statement. The external affairs ministry said in a statement that India had articulated its position on developments between Israel and Iran on Friday, when New Delhi called for dialogue and diplomacy to be used to work towards de-escalation. India believes it is essential for the international community to 'undertake endeavours in that direction', the statement said. The SCO statement issued on Saturday expressed serious concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East and 'strongly condemned the military strikes carried out by Israel on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran'. The statement was critical of Israel, saying that 'aggressive actions against civilian targets, including energy and transport infrastructure, which have resulted in civilian casualties, are a gross violation of international law'. The SCO statement had also said that members of the grouping 'consider any unlawful actions directed against SCO member states unacceptable'. Besides India and Iran, the other members of SCO are China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Jaishankar spoke on phone with both Araghchi and Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar on Friday to discuss the evolving situation. Sa'ar also briefed Jaishankar during their phone call. Earlier, the external affairs ministry had expressed deep concern at the developments between Iran and Israel, and said it is monitoring the evolving situation, including reported attacks on nuclear sites. 'India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support,' the ministry said in a statement. India's move to distance itself from the SCO statement came hours after it abstained at a vote at the UN General Assembly on a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution was adopted with the overwhelming support of 149 countries. This reflected the Indian government's reluctance to back any moves seen as critical of Israel, a critical supplier of military hardware that was also used during the recent hostilities with Pakistan.
