Watch: Glenn Maxwell Clinches T20I Series Win For Australia With Ingenious Reverse Sweep vs South Africa
Glenn Maxwell took a brilliant catch before smashing a half-century under pressure to help Australia overcome a dogged South Africa by two wickets and seal the three-match Twenty20 series in Cairns on Saturday. In response to South Africa's 172-7, Australia were in trouble at 122-6 in the 14th over before Maxwell stepped up with an unbeaten 62 off 36 balls. There was a late twist when South Africa quick Corbin Bosch dismissed Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis with consecutive deliveries. But Maxwell crunched a boundary on the penultimate ball of the match before celebrating with gusto. Hot favourites Australia won the first match but were stunned by a 52-run defeat in game two before moving to Cairns in northern Queensland, which hosted its first T20 international. "It was a little nerve-racking," Maxwell said. "I tried to stay on strike as much as I could and cash in on anything loose." Watch: Glenn Maxwell wins it for Australia in style GLENN MAXWELL WINS IT ON THE SECOND LAST BALL! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 16, 2025 Australia captain Mitchell Marsh elected to field in helpful conditions for seam bowlers, a contrast to the batting-friendly surfaces used in the opening two games in Darwin. Veteran quick Josh Hazlewood rebounded from an errant performance in game two by dismissing captain Aiden Markram for one in the first over. Lhuan-dre Pretorius hit a quick-fire 24 before falling to Ellis, bringing to the crease Dewald Brevis who smashed a South African T20 record of 125 not out in game two. He crunched his sixth delivery onto the roof before a diving Maxwell dropped a tough one-handed chance at long-on. Brevis motored to his half-century off 22 balls. Maxwell, a brilliant fielder, redeemed himself in the 12th over with a superb diving catch in the outfield to halt Brevis' charge on 53. South Africa's innings ran out of steam and their total appeared well short when Marsh dominated a 66-run opening partnership with Travis Head. But South Africa hit back with the quick wickets of Head (19) and Josh Inglis for a first ball duck. Marsh made 54 before holing out to 19-year-old quick Kwena Maphaka, who later in the 11th over dismissed Cameron Green (nine). Australia's collapse of 6-56 was complete when in-form Tim David (17) and Aaron Hardie (one) were dismissed before Maxwell took over. The Australian players wore black armbands in honour of former captain and coach Bob Simpson, who died at the age of 89. The three-match One-Day International series between the teams starts in Cairns on Tuesday.

Glenn Maxwell's Clutch Heroics Seal T20I Series Win For Australia Vs South Africa
Last Updated: Stunning-as-always Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 62 led Australia to a two-wicket win over South Africa in Cairns, sealing the T20 series 2-1. Glenn Maxwell took a stunning catch and then scored a crucial half-century to help Australia edge past a resilient South Africa by two wickets, securing the three-match Twenty20 series in Cairns on Saturday. Chasing South Africa's 172-7, Australia found themselves in trouble at 122-6 in the 14th over until Maxwell's unbeaten 62 off 36 balls turned the game. A late drama unfolded when South African pacer Corbin Bosch took two consecutive wickets, dismissing Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis. However, Maxwell hit a boundary on the second-last ball of the match to seal the victory and celebrated enthusiastically. Australia, who were favourites, had won the first match but faced a setback with a 52-run defeat in the second game before moving to Cairns, which hosted its first T20 international. Maxwell admitted, 'It was a little nerve-racking. I tried to stay on strike as much as I could and cash in on anything loose." Australia's captain Mitchell Marsh decided to field first, taking advantage of conditions favourable for seam bowlers, unlike the batting-friendly pitches in the first two games in Darwin. Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored a quick 24 before falling to Ellis, making way for Dewald Brevis, who had scored a record-breaking 125 not out in the second game. Brevis hit his sixth delivery onto the roof before Maxwell dropped a difficult one-handed chance at long-on. However, Brevis reached his half-century off 22 balls. Maxwell, known for his fielding prowess, redeemed himself in the 12th over with an excellent diving catch to dismiss Brevis for 53. South Africa's innings lost momentum and their total seemed insufficient when Marsh led a 66-run opening partnership with Travis Head. South Africa then struck back, quickly dismissing Head (19) and Josh Inglis for a first-ball duck. Marsh scored 54 before getting out to 19-year-old Kwena Maphaka, who later in the 11th over also dismissed Cameron Green (nine). Australia's collapse of 6-56 was completed when in-form Tim David (17) and Aaron Hardie (one) were dismissed, but Maxwell took control from there. The Australian players wore black armbands to honour former captain and coach Bob Simpson, who passed away at the age of 89. The three-match One-Day International series between the teams starts in Cairns on Tuesday. Abhinav Bindra Named Among Nine IOC Mental Health Ambassadors
Last Updated: Abhinav Bindra has been named an IOC mental health ambassador to prioritise mental health in sports through open discussions and support. Abhinav Bindra, India's first-ever individual gold medallist at the Olympics, has been named one of the nine mental health ambassadors by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Alongside Abhinav Bindra, who secured gold in the men's 10m air rifle shooting at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the list includes Olympians Holly Bradshaw (British pole vaulter), Camille Cheng (swimmer from Hong Kong, China), Bruno Fratus (Brazilian swimmer), Gracie Gold (American figure skater), Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith (sprinter from Ivory Coast), Ryan Pini (swimmer from Papua New Guinea), Akani Simbine (South African sprinter), and Masomah Ali Zada (Afghan cyclist). 'The IOC believes that mental health is just as important as physical health, and no athlete should face challenges alone. That's why, as part of the IOC Mental Health Action Plan, we've brought together a group of Olympians from around the world to lead the way in creating a more open and supportive sporting environment," IOC said in a statement. 'The IOC Mental Health Ambassadors are using their voices and experiences to break down stigma, encourage honest conversations, and champion mental well-being in sport. 'Each Ambassador serves as a trusted advocate, helping to share evidence-based messages, offer valuable feedback on IOC mental health initiatives, and inspire open and honest conversations, within sport and beyond. 'Whether through social media, one-on-one conversations or IOC educational programmes, they're here to inspire and support the athlete community, and ensure that mental health remains a vital part of the high-performance environment. With athletes leading the conversation, we're working together to build a culture where mental health matters, and where every athlete feels safe, supported and heard," the statement concluded. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
