Rob Walter hired as New Zealand's head coach after leaving South Africa job
Rob Walter has been hired to coach the New Zealand men's cricket team in all three formats as a replacement for Gary Stead.
Walter coached South Africa's teams in the one-day and Twenty20 formats from January 2023 until April this year. Before then he coached New Zealand's Otago province for five years and at the Central Districts association.
He guided South Africa to the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup and the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the ODI format and to the final of the T20 World Cup last year.
Stead was New Zealand's head coach in all three formats from 2018 until earlier this week when New Zealand Cricket announced it was seeking a replacement.
Stead announced in March he was stepping down from his roles in the limited-overs formats but intended to remain as test coach. New Zealand Cricket said it preferred a coach to lead the Black Caps in all three formats.
'It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested,' Walter said. 'I just can't wait to get started. It's exciting, it's challenging and the opportunity is enormous.'
The 49-year-old Walter was high on New Zealand Cricket's list of preferred candidates from the moment it decided to pursue another all-formats coach, ruling out Stead who guided the Black Caps to the inaugural World Test Championship.
'Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree,' NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said. 'His success in New Zealand's domestic game combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps.'
He'll take over in time for New Zealand's tour to Zimbabwe, which starts with a T20 tri-series against the hosts and South Africa before a two-test series against Zimbabwe.

Mumbai: All-rounder Radha Yadav will replace injured Shuchi Upadhyay in India's squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of England, starting later this month. India will play five T20Is and three ODIs against England, who have a new captain and head coach in Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlotte Edwards respectively. "The Women's Selection Committee has named Radha Yadav as a replacement for Shuchi Upadhyay in Team India's squads for the England tour," the BCCI said in a statement. "Shuchi was ruled out of the tour after sustaining a left shin injury, which was diagnosed during the pre-tour camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru," it added. She made her ODI debut against South Africa in the Women's Tri-Series last month which remains her only match in India colours. India's squad announcement for the tour was headlined by Shafali Verma who made her comeback into India's T20I team. Though Shafali was only named for the T20I leg of the tour, pacer Sayali Satghare made it to both squads, adding some heft to India's fast bowling stocks, depleted due to Renuka Singh Thakur and Titas Sadhu's injuries. Shafali had been out of the national set-up after last year's T20 World Cup in the UAE, where India failed to enter the semi-finals. After strong showings in the domestic 20-over and 50-over matches, Shafali amassed 304 runs from nine innings with a strike rate of 152.76 for Delhi Capitals (DC) in WPL 2025 and finished in fourth place in the run-scorers charts. That strong showing in this year's WPL has propelled the Neetu David-led selection committee to bring back Shafali into the shortest format scheme of things. For the ODIs, barring Sayali's addition, the selectors retained the side which won the recent tri-series in Sri Lanka, which featured South Africa as the third team. The three ODIs against England provide ample chances for India to fine-tune their combinations ahead of this year's ODI World Cup, to be held on their home soil in September-October. Out or not out? David Bedingham survives the handle-the-ball appeal in WTC final
South Africa batter David Bedingham found himself at the centre of a rare and controversial moment during the World Test Championship final against Australia, surviving an appeal for handling the ball - now classified as obstructing the incident took place when Australia's Beau Webster bowled a length delivery that Bedingham defended with a faint inside edge.
