Access Advance Welcomes Global Technology Leaders as Licensees and Licensors to New Video Distribution Patent Pool

Business Wire02-07-2025
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Access Advance LLC ("Advance") today announced the inaugural roster of licensees and licensors for its Video Distribution Patent ("VDP") Pool, marking a significant milestone in the program's rapid market adoption since its January announcement. The participation of major global companies heavily involved in video codec technology demonstrates strong industry support for the comprehensive licensing solution covering HEVC, VVC, VP9, and AV1 codecs.
The licensees' participation provides immediate access to the wide-ranging patent portfolio while benefiting from the fixed tiered pricing structure designed to scale with business size.
The VDP Pool has successfully attracted a group of licensees/licensors including ByteDance, Kuaishou, NTT Docomo, and Tencent. This represents the beginning of what Access Advance expects to be widespread adoption among content streaming providers seeking simplified codec licensing. The licensees' participation provides immediate access to the wide-ranging patent portfolio while benefiting from the fixed tiered pricing structure designed to scale with business size.
"We're pleased to welcome ByteDance, Kuaishou, NTT Docomo and Tencent as our first VDP Pool licensees/licensors. Their commitment to the VDP program demonstrates the practical value of our one-stop-shop approach and the fact that the VDP program has successfully struck a balance between patent owners and implementers," said Peter Moller, CEO of Access Advance. "This milestone shows that the VDP Pool is delivering on its promise to provide simplicity and predictability for online video distributors, allowing them to focus on innovation and content delivery rather than complex patent negotiations."
The VDP Pool has also confirmed a large group of licensors representing a strong and substantial portfolio of standard essential patents for video codecs, positioning the pool to provide extensive intellectual property coverage for video streaming services. This initial group of patent owners includes the following internationally recognized technology leaders whose innovations are fundamental to modern video streaming infrastructure:

"The strong participation from major industry players and patent holders validates our approach and demonstrates that the VDP program is the preferred solution to the market's need for a unified licensing solution that balances the interest of patent owners and implementers," Moller added. "These licensors bring not only essential patent portfolios but also the credibility and scale necessary to make the VDP Pool the preferred licensing destination for streaming video providers globally."
The announcement comes as the industry increasingly seeks to license video codec patents directly to content streaming providers, who have benefited significantly from the use of patented, efficient video codecs. Access Advance's approach aims to provide broad access to patented technology while promoting continued innovation in video codec technologies.
Access Advance is in the process of finalizing agreements with several more licensors and licensees. More announcements will be made in the coming days and weeks. In addition, the VDP Pool rate structure has been posted to the Access Advance website (https://accessadvance.com/vdp-pool-royalty). Why Trump is starting ‘not to give a crap' if TikTok goes dark — at least briefly

President Trump is starting 'not to give a crap' if TikTok briefly goes dark as the end to the latest ban extension looms, On The Money has learned. Trump has tired of China dangling TikTok as a carrot to gain an advantage in ongoing trade talks over tariffs, people with knowledge of the discussions said. The two sides have been close to a trade deal, Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have said in recent days, ahead of next Tuesday's deadline for an agreement. 3 There's a 50-50 shot TikTok fades to black come the Sept. 17 deadline for a deal – at least for a while until both Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping settle on a trade pact that includes keeping the app live. Donald Pearsall / NY Post Design But those talks could also stretch into the fall as they hammer out the final details, Bessent has suggested. That's why the betting inside the TikTok deal pool is that there's a 50-50 shot it fades to black come the Sept. 17 deadline for a TikTok deal – at least for a while until both Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping settle on a trade pact that includes keeping the app live. You might be thinking that Trump just might kick the can down the road with another executive order extension, right? Well not so fast, I am told, including by one person close to the TikTok talks who relayed the lack of 'crap' Trump feels if the video-sharing app is briefly yanked. The deal only works if US investors are ready to put up tens of billions of dollars to buy the app from the Chinese company ByteDance, and if the Chinese are willing to give up enough control to satisfy the ban law. 3 The deal only works if US investors are ready to put up tens of billions of dollars to buy the app from the Chinese company ByteDance, and if the Chinese are willing to give up enough control to satisfy the ban law. AFP via Getty Images Investors, however, are getting nervous over the multiple extensions by Trump that appear to be circumventing established law. They fear there might come a point when Congress says enough. Also, China wants to retain a minority stake in the company and ownership of the all-important app that keeps users engaged by offering them a nonstop supply of preferred videos. Investors are hearing from China-hawks in Congress — those who really believe the app's user data is used by the Chinese surveillance state for spy-craft purposes — that even a minority stake by the Chinese might violate the law. 3 TikTok supporters in 2023 protesting against a ban. Getty Images If so, and if they agreed to a deal, these investors could be on the hook for hundreds of billions of dollars of liability if let's say a less deal-friendly DOJ after Trump leaves office brings a case given the way the ban law is written. Some private investors are demanding indemnification or their out. Trump may also be losing patience with the whole TikTok saga. He has touted that he has multiple buyers to create what is essentially a new US company to keep it alive, but people involved in the deal doubt that he will allow Xi to use it as a bargaining chip in the broader trade deal, I am told. He isn't going to give up a lot just to keep TikTok alive, they predict. A White House spokesman had no comment. TikTok and its estimated 170 million US users got a new lease on life after its once fiercest critic, Trump, pulled a major U-turn. He wanted it banned when he was president the first time, believing it was used by the Chinese surveillance state for nefarious purposes. More recently, he wanted it saved after he came to believe pro-Trump messaging on the app helped him win in 2024 by turning a swath of TikTok's youngish users into die-hard MAGA supporters. Just hours into his second term, Trump overruled bipartisan legislation signed into law by President Biden and upheld by the Trump-friendly Supreme Court that banned the app unless it divested from the Chinese by Jan. 19. Through executive orders he has extended the life of the app several times since.

Trump Hosting Apple Exec to Tout $100 Billion Investment

Apple CEO Tim Cook greets former President Barack Obama at the inauguration of President Donald Trump at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on January 20, 2025. Credit - Julia Demaree Nikhinson—Pool/Getty Images President Donald Trump is set to host an event on Wednesday to take credit for Apple's latest promise to boost its spending in the U.S. In the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon, Trump will announce Apple is adding $100 billion to the $500 billion pledge the company made in February to increase its investment in U.S. manufacturing and tech training, according to two White House officials. The announcement comes as Apple tries to avoid Trump's tariffs on imports impacting the cost of its iPhones and computers in the U.S. Trump's announcement will bring Apple's promised investment in the U.S. to $600 billion over the next four years. It follows a pattern of Trump stepping forward to tout investments companies are making in the U.S. It's unclear how much of those investments would have been made anyway. Trump has predicted his threat of tariffs on imports will pressure companies to increase manufacturing inside the U.S. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the total number of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. has ticked downward slightly since Trump took office. Apple announced in February that it planned to expand facilities in Arizona, California, Iowa, Oregon, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Washington state. The company said it would construct a new factory in Houston, Texas by the end of 2026 intended to build servers that support Apple's AI products. Apple has also promised to increase education for tech manufacturing workers. The Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit, Michigan, is scheduled to open on Aug. 19. Apple said it would double its designated U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Fund from $5 billion to $10 billion. Apple's investment promises during Trump's second term haven't all been tied to manufacturing. The company said in February that its additional spending would also be used for building more artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centers, and show production for the Apple TV+ streaming service. 'Today's announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry that will simultaneously help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security,' White House assistant press secretary Taylor Rogers said in a statement.
