Stronger Malaysia-Russia ties not at others' expense

KAZAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Saturday that Malaysia's growing ties with Russia should not be seen as a zero-sum game, stressing that as an open trading nation, it is vital for the country to expand partnerships broadly to protect its economic interests. He stressed that strengthening relations with one country does not mean weakening ties with others, including the United States (US).
Advertisement 'It should not be seen as a matter of a zero-sum game. It should be complementary,' Anwar told reporters at the exit press conference at the end of his four-day official visit to Russia, when asked if close ties with Moscow would affect Malaysia's relations with other countries. His official visit here included meetings with President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and several industry leaders in Moscow and Kazan. In fact, as an open trading nation, Malaysia remains committed to expanding trade partnerships broadly and independently, as part of efforts to protect and promote national economic interests, said Anwar, who is also Finance Minister. 'Malaysia is a trading country. To protect our interests, we have to broaden and expand our market and trading partnerships,' he said.
Advertisement Malaysia continues to welcome American investments, citing recent discussions between Malaysian agencies and US counterparts. 'In fact, just last week, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices Inc) was there. There have been serious discussions to expand activities, and we certainly welcome that,' said the prime minister. Touching on the sanctions faced by Russia, Anwar reiterated Malaysia's position that only sanctions endorsed by multilateral institutions like the United Nations (UN) carry weight in its foreign policy considerations. 'If a sanction is imposed by a multilateral agency like the UN, of course, we respect that. But if it is a unilateral action by any individual country, that is difficult for us as an independent country to just honour,' he said. He acknowledged that payment-related issues were raised by Malaysian businesses operating in Russia, but said both governments are working to find solutions. 'There are many areas that are not under sanction, such as education. We are moving forward in those sectors,' he said. Increasing retirement age will balance with providing opportunities for youth
KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry has assured that any review of the retirement age will strike a balance between retaining an experienced workforce and creating opportunities for the younger generation. Its minister Steven Sim said several factors must be taken into account in developing a long-term framework, including Malaysians' rising life expectancy, the health and productivity levels of older workers, national labour demand, and the youth unemployment rate. "The Ministry also considers the long-term impact on youth employment, ensuring that any policy change will not add further pressure to the national labour market. "The main focus is to maintain a balance between retaining experienced workers and providing opportunities for the younger generation to secure jobs suited to their qualifications," he said in a written parliamentary reply. Sim said the retirement age set under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012 is 60, which represents the minimum age at which an employee may retire. "However, the Act does not prevent employers from hiring workers above the age of 60 or extending their employment," he said. He was responding to Riduan Rubin (Independent–Tenom), who asked about the empirical rationale and long-term policy framework behind the ministry's review of the retirement age, to ensure it does not increase pressure on youth employment opportunities or leave a highly educated younger generation without suitable jobs. On May 23, Sim said the issue of retirement age is among 28 labour laws under the purview of the ministry currently undergoing review, reforms and updates. He said the matter was being considered carefully, taking into account the suitability of any changes in the Malaysian context, as there are both pros and cons to raising the retirement age.

UN experts denounce massacres and sexual violence against Syria's Druze
GENEVA: United Nations human rights experts have condemned widespread atrocities against Syria's Druze minority in the southern Sweida region over the past month. A panel of more than a dozen UN specialists denounced what they described as an outbreak of massacres, sexual violence and kidnappings targeting the religious minority. 'The scale of violence reported -- including massacres, looting of homes, shops and livestock, and use of stolen phones for extortion -- points to a targeted campaign against the Druze minority,' the panel of more than a dozen UN experts said Thursday. Fighting erupted in the Sweida region on July 13 between local Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouin communities before rapidly escalating. The conflict drew in government forces and volunteers from other parts of Syria following the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad late last year. Syria's new interim regime stated its forces intervened to restore order but faced accusations of committing human rights abuses during operations. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported approximately 1,600 fatalities from the violence, with many victims being Druze civilians. 'The experts pointed to the reported abduction of at least 105 Druze women and girls by armed groups affiliated with the Syrian interim authorities, with 80 still missing,' the UN statement said. The panel documented intense sectarian clashes triggered by looting and retaliations between Bedouin and Druze communities that escalated into widespread violence. Hateful rhetoric spread through online platforms and Syrian media outlets portrayed Druze community members as traitors loyal to neighbouring Israel. 'Some women who were released cannot return home due to safety fears. In at least three cases, Druze women were allegedly raped before being executed.' Some public calls demanded the abduction and enslavement of Druze women according to the experts' findings. The expert panel comprises specialists in human rights and related disciplines mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to report on the situation. The panel urged Syrian authorities to enhance protection for all minority communities including the Druze population. They called for an immediate halt to incitement to violence and demanded upholding civilian safety with special protections for women and girls. Protests have emerged following the deaths with Druze communities pushing for self-determination rights. – AFP
