Time of India2 days ago
Varanasi: The holy month of Sravan that ended in parts of the country on Saturday witnessed around 10 million pilgrims visiting Varanasi, where the local administration and the police had made elaborate arrangements that helped them manage the crowds without any major incidents.
'Around 150,000-200,000 pilgrims visited Varanasi every day (six days a week). On four Sravan Mondays, 600,000-700,000 devotees visited, and taking together Nag Panchami, the total number was almost a crore (10 million) in the last one month,' Varanasi police commissioner Mohit Agarwal told ET.

The police and the local administration had enhanced the city's drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring, implemented special crowd management systems, and set up more medical assistance and police booths during the period to manage the influx of pilgrims to the holy city, which is also the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The number of pilgrims who visited Varanasi during the
Sravan month
last year was marginally lower compared with this year. However, during the Maha Kumbh, around 100 million people a month visited in January and February this year, which was a big challenge to handle, Agarwal said. The learnings from the time helped make arrangements during the Sravan month this time, he said.
Police personnel were given special behavioural training to handle pilgrims with empathy, care and respect, Agarwal said.

The entire area near the
Kashi Vishwanath Temple
was turned to a no-vehicle zone for the first time and parking facilities have been earmarked outside the city periphery for big buses and vehicles, he added.
'A control room was set up which was monitored by the commissioner of police, district magistrate divisional commissioner from the night ahead of Sravan Mondays, as the devotees started to assemble in large numbers and crowd flow was monitored,' Agarwal said.
Two lanes of the four-lane highway from Prayagraj to Varanasi were dedicated for 'kanwaris' as they travelled to Varanasi.
Kanwar Yatra
, undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva, or 'kanwaris', is one of the most prominent religious activities during the Sravan month.
On the last Monday of the month of Sravan, devotees gathered in large numbers in Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath Temple. With water levels of the Ganga increasing above the danger level and most of the ghats getting submerged in the past few days, authorities had to make special arrangements this year, including to barricade the ghat, the police commissioner said.

Citizens in limbo as lack of clarity clouds bus pick-up, drop-off points

1 2 Nagpur: Travellers in Nagpur are grappling with confusion over where they will board or alight from private buses after the traffic police issued a notification banning pick-up and drop-off services inside the Inner Ring Road. The decision, they say, has come without clear communication, leaving both commuters and operators uncertain about designated points. The notification is part of the police's effort to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in the city. However, passengers argue that the implementation was abrupt and poorly planned, without considering the practical needs of thousands who rely on these services daily. Private bus operators say that around 350 to 400 buses run from Nagpur each day, carrying over 12,000 passengers. The absence of clearly defined alternative locations, they claim, will disrupt services and inconvenience thousands, particularly daily commuters and long-distance travellers. Many passengers told TOI that they were taken by surprise by the sudden order. Aniket Upadhyay, a Wardha native who works in Nagpur, is among them. He parks his bike at Chhatrapati Bus Stop before riding to his office near Ajni. "If suddenly bus operators start dropping me near the airport, Chinchbhuvan or outside the city, it will be very inconvenient. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Consider S&P 500 Index Funds? eToro Market Updates Learn More Undo There's no secure parking at those locations, and I'd have to travel further," he said. Upadhyay is one of many who use Chhatrapati or Somalwada stops for regular trips to Wardha, Yavatmal, Chandrapur and other nearby cities. Long-distance travellers are also uneasy. Shishir Zore, a resident of Indora who frequently travels to Pune, boards near Bole Petrol Pump because it is convenient for him. "There is no clarity among the public about where the new boarding points will be. If they are outside the city, how will I reach them, or get home when I return?" he asked. The commuters and operators have called for the traffic police to work with stakeholders to identify suitable locations for pick-up and drop-off, preferably at places with good connectivity and passenger safety measures. Until then, travellers say, the current situation remains a logistical headache — one that risks leaving thousands stranded or forcing them to spend more time and money on simply reaching their buses. Air Canada cancels flights: What do we know about strike of Canada's largest carrier?

Air Canada is cancelling flights from Thursday, as the country's largest carrier winds down service ahead of a looming Saturday strike by its more than 10,000 flight attendants. Montreal-based Air Canada said on Wednesday it plans to cease flying on Saturday after its flight attendants' union served a 72-hour strike notice due to stalled contract talks over pay. Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge carry about 130,000 customers a day. A strike would hit the country's tourism sector during the height of summer travel. Air Canada is also the foreign carrier with the largest number of flights to the U.S. Finance Value and Valuation Masterclass - Batch 4 By CA Himanshu Jain View Program Artificial Intelligence AI For Business Professionals Batch 2 By Ansh Mehra View Program Finance Value and Valuation Masterclass - Batch 3 By CA Himanshu Jain View Program Artificial Intelligence AI For Business Professionals By Vaibhav Sisinity View Program Finance Value and Valuation Masterclass - Batch 2 By CA Himanshu Jain View Program Finance Value and Valuation Masterclass Batch-1 By CA Himanshu Jain View Program The standoff is testing the country's Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney, which was asked by Air Canada to impose arbitration on both sides. Representatives of Carney and Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu did not respond to requests for comment on whether they would take action, such as imposing arbitration that would stop a strike. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canada is looking for skilled immigrants from Jamaica! Canadian Visa Professionals Sign Up Hajdu on Tuesday encouraged both parties to remain at the table until a deal is reached. The dispute hinges on the way airlines compensate flight attendants. Most airlines have traditionally paid attendants only when planes are in motion. But flight attendants in North America have sought compensation for hours worked, including for tasks such as boarding passengers and waiting in the airport. The strike by flight attendants represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees is set to begin at 12:58 a.m. EDT (0458 GMT) on Saturday. Air Canada has said customers would be fully refunded for cancellations, which could hit lucrative routes between Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. The airline also issued a lockdown notice beginning 32 minutes after the strike. It had declared a deadlock in negotiations on Tuesday, after the union rejected its proposal for binding arbitration. Live Events The carrier had offered a 38% increase in total compensation for flight attendants over four years, with a 25% raise in the first year. However, the union said the offer would raise actual wages by 17.2% over four years and was below inflation. Air Canada had offered to compensate flight attendants for some unpaid work, but only at 50% of their hourly rate. A union spokesperson said its negotiators are awaiting a response from Air Canada after it made a new proposal Tuesday night. Flight attendants have negotiated with more confidence, encouraged by improved airline earnings in 2024 and bumper pay deals for pilots since the pandemic. Such concessions would raise labor costs for Air Canada, which reported a drop in second-quarter profit, weighed down by weak passenger traffic to the U.S. FAQs Q1. Which airline has cancelled flights? A1. Air Canada is cancelling flights from Thursday. Q2. How many passengers Air Canada carry on a daily basis? A2. Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge carry about 130,000 customers a day.

Aanathazhchira near Technocity to be developed into tourism hub

Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to promote lesser-known destinations and boost local tourism, state tourism department has launched a major initiative to transform Aanathazhchira, near Technocity in Pallippuram, into a vibrant tourism spot. Spread across 16.7 acres owned by revenue department and Andoorkonam grama panchayat, the project aims to tap into the region's natural beauty and strategic location near the fast-developing IT corridor. As part of the formal procedures, revenue minister K Rajan handed over the title deed of the land to tourism minister P A Mohamed Riyas at a function held at Aanathazhchira Ground on Wednesday. Minister for food and civil supplies G R Anil, who represents the area, presided over the event. Riyas said the project would be beneficial for the local community, besides giving a facelift to the landscape of the village. The revenue minister said the project would leverage the immense tourism potential of Aanathazhchira. Anil lauded the tourism minister for taking up the project proposed by him considering the immense potential of the place. It was Anil who initially proposed the Aanathazhchira tourism project, recognising the location's untapped tourism potential and connectivity advantages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Diversify your portfolio with Edelweiss NFO Edelweiss Mutual Fund AMC Undo Following the land transfer, minister Riyas suggested including the development plan under the proposals discussed at the tourism investors meet (TIM) held earlier this year. The tourism department has entrusted the project management unit, formed as part of the TIM follow-up, to draw up a detailed project framework. This will explore ways to fully utilise the site's tourism potential and integrate it into broader state tourism strategies. The project is slated to be developed through a public-private partnership model. An expression of interest (EoI) inviting construction partners for the project, envisioned as a 'nightlife tourism destination', is expected to be floated in Sept. The project will prioritise eco-friendly infrastructure, with plans for water adventure sports, a children's eco-park and a dedicated cycling track. The focus on sustainability and innovation is expected to make Aanathazhchira a unique model for integrated urban tourism and recreational development, authorities said.
