Florida football adds blue-chip ATH Heze Kent to 2026 recruiting haul

USA Todaya day ago
It may be the dog days of summer, but Florida football's recruiting efforts remain in high gear.
On Saturday, the Gators added four-star athlete Heze Kent out of Brunswick (Georgia) to their 2026 recruiting class. The 6-foot-6-inch, 310-pound prospect chose the Orange and Blue from a list of 38 offers, which included the Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes and Texas Longhorns, who were included among his top four destinations.
Kent's main focus when evaluating various schools was the ability to remain at the tight end position, where he has logged the most time during his prep playing days. However, his size and athleticism make him a great fit on both the offensive and defensive lines — and many programs have noted this — but Florida was among the few who believed in his ability to play tight end.
To that point, his relationship with offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Russ Callaway helped seal the deal on his verbal pledge.
"That's like a father or a brother to me," Kent told Swamp247. "My coach had told me how he was as a person, like the same person he is on the field is the same person he is off."
He also added, "My relationship with Florida is how you see Kyrie (Irving) and LeBron (James)."
Heze Kent's Recruiting Summary
Kent is ranked No. 149 overall and No. 9 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 158 and 14, respectively.
"One of the more unique evaluations in the 2026 cycle," 247Sports national analyst Hudson Standish.
"Jumbo athlete hovering around 6-foot-6, 310 pounds who primarily plays tight end at the prep level but likely projects to offensive tackle or defensive tackle on Saturdays... Shows significant developmental blocking upside when asked to stay attached, possesses nimble movement skills and redirection ability that directly translate from his work as a forward on the basketball court...
"Uncommon movement skills from a player of his size in the open field and will make acrobatic ladder-climbing snags in the red zone... Dominates South Georgia 5A competition in a variety of ways and has even found success as a ball carrier... Could start his career as a specialty tight end in 12/13 personnel groupings before transitioning to a long-term positional home...
"Sheer size and athleticism point to obvious long-term NFL upside, especially if he embraces a role along the offensive or defensive line at the next level."

Former Iowa baseball star Cade Obermueller among ESPN staff's favorite MLB draft picks

Iowa baseball is starting to build a nice MLB pitcher pipeline as of late. In recent years, names like Brody Brecht and Adam Mazur have heard their names called on draft night, with the latter making his MLB debut earlier this season. And the Hawkeyes were able to add another pitcher to the big league ranks when Cade Obermueller was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd round of the 2025 MLB draft. Obermueller is seen as a quick riser through the minor league systems and many figure he could debut sooner rather than later. That thought process had a lot of scouts and executives excited over his potential and lead to him being drafted pretty early in this years draft. And the selection of Obermueller earned high praise from one veteran ESPN writer. Phillies named big winners after Obermueller selection ESPN MLB writer Kiley McDaniel released his favorite picks of the first day of the MLB draft on Monday morning and the Phillies were mentioned after their selections of Obermueller and Arkansas pitcher Gage Wood. The Phillies' next pick, Cade Obermueller, is another possible starter who also could move quickly as a lefty turning 22 later this month with two knockout pitches in his fastball/slider combo. Odds are good that at least one of them can provide big league value in the next 12 months if Philly wants to utilize them that way. -McDaniel. Obermueller is more than deserving of the praise after a stellar career at Iowa. Across three seasons with the Hawkeyes, Obermueller started 30 games and pitched 165 innings. He had a 3.60 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and an astounding 226 strikeouts. Last season for the Hawks, Obermueller started 15 games, going 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 117 strikeouts in 83.1 innings. He was named an All-Big Ten first team selection following his 2025 season. Obermueller was previously drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 2024 MLB draft, but chose to return to school to improve his stock. And that decision payed major dividends. He now joins an organization that knows how to develop pitching, with names like Ranger Suarez, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez and Mick Abel all having success in their system. And now Obermueller will get the chance to add to the Hawkeye pitching tree, which continues to blossom under Rick Heller. New WR trade target emerges for Steelers amid contract dispute in NFC West

The Steelers roster is primed for success in 2025 — but if they add another talented wide receiver opposite DK Metcalf? That could propel Pittsburgh to Super Bowl contender status. Enter 49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who's coming off a breakout 2024 season and appears to be available for the Steelers to acquire. According to insider Adam Schefter, Jennings — who's set to make $7.5 million in 2025 — is seeking a new contract or a trade, presenting the perfect opportunity for the Steelers to acquire a bona fide WR2 at a bargain. Jennings is coming off his best production in 2024, accumulating 975 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 15 games — only 10 of which were starts. The Steelers are no strangers to trade talks with the 49ers, as Pittsburgh spent the majority of summer 2024 looking to acquire WR Brandon Aiyuk. Acquiring Jennings — who produced the first 900-plus receiving yard season of his four-year career last season — should be relatively cheap, potentially a fifth-round pick and a Day 3 pick swap at the most. If Pittsburgh is truly all in on what's looking like Aaron Rodgers' last season in 2025, trading for Jennings could push what's already a stacked Steelers roster to instant Super Bowl contender status. New offseason video shows Carson Cooper's continued improvement in three-point shot

It's the middle of the summer so live basketball content is not often available, but, thanks to the Moneyball Pro-Am, we get an inside look to how the Spartans are improving their games this offseason. For one Spartan big man, that apparently includes adding a three-point shot. Early this summer, fans began to speculate about Carson Cooper working to develop a three-point shot thanks to a social media post of the Spartans practicing. That speculation and fan interest has only grown after some of the most recent Moneyball Pro-Am games where Cooper has shown off a nice looking shot from deep. Thanks to Spartans Illustrated, a highlight video of Cooper and starting point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. has hit the social media timelines. In this video, we can see Cooper knocking down some threes -- which has not remotely been part of his game up to this point in his Michigan State career. At least during games, that is. Check out the clip of Cooper drilling some deep shots below: As we do with any Moneyball Pro-Am content, I will remind you that we can't put too much emphasis on what we get out of these exhibition games. In the past, that has burned us when we raised the bar too high on guys like Pierre Brooks III and Lourawls "Tum Tum" Nairn Jr. But, with that being said, Cooper's shot looks pretty nice from the video clip seen above, so... maybe this is actually something we should be monitoring for this fall. Cooper has only taken one three-point shot attempt in a game since coming to Michigan State -- which was a miss. So I'm not going to act like this is the beginning of a sharp shooting big man for the Spartans. But let's just file this away as further evidence of potentially a new part of Cooper's game coming our way this season. And, should it actually turn into something we consistently see, then that would go a long way for Cooper and the Spartans this year.
