Pirates news: Coach rejects Riveiro job; Kaizer Chiefs target snatched?

Orlando Pirates, on the hunt for Jose Riveiro's successor, have a new man in their sights, but it hasn't gone according to plan.
Simba coach and Cape Town native Fadlu Davids is enjoying an emphatic season in Tanzania, sitting second on the log and recently dismissing Stellenbosch to reach the CAF Confederation Cup, where they face RSB Berkane.
The 43-year-old knows the Soweto giants well, having spent two years as assistant coach to Josef Zinnbauer, winning the club's first of four MTN8 Cups in five years.
Orlando Pirates are hoping for a reunion, but the former Maritzburg United sounds settled in Tanzania, derailing any hopes of acquiring his services.
'Yes, it's true that Orlando Pirates wanted Davids back. It was not only Pirates, Raja (Casablanca) also wanted him, but he wanted to remain with Simba,' Citizen reported .
'He says he still has some unfinished business with Simba. He has done well at Simba and the fans love him so he wants to stay at the club.'
Yanela Mbuthuma has what many South African soccer players dream off: Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates interest.
Both clubs are eager to have him, but of course, only one can.
'There are several players that the club is looking at for next season but the first priority is the striking department and it's believed that they have identified Richards Bay United's Yanela Mbuthuma and the club is set to table an offer for him,' a source said.
The 23-year-old has netted five goals across all competitions this season.

Bafana Bafana's preliminary squad for FIFA World Cup qualifiers!

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has announced his preliminary squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Broos' charges will take on Lesotho and Nigeria on 5 and 9 September respectively in their attempt to qualify for the 2026 global showpiece. There are familiar faces in the preliminary squad, including that of Sipho Mbule, Mohau Nkota who recently moved to Saudi Arabia. Orlando Pirates youngsters Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Relebohile Mofokeng have also cracked the nod. Interestingly, Kaizer Chiefs have also been represented by Bradley Cross and Mduduzi Shabalala. As expected, Mamelodi Sundowns dominate this preliminary Bafana Bafana squad with the majority of their top stars making the cut. There are concerns, though, with two of Sundowns players in Khuliso Mudau and Themba Zwane who have also been included. Mudau is yet to kick a ball for Sundowns this season while Zwane suffered an injury against Pirates last week. Zwane is expected to be out for at least two months, according to his Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso. Now, Broos is expected to trim the squad down to 23 closer to the dates of these two crucial fixtures. Bafana Bafana top the Group C standings with 13 points from six matches followed by Rwanda who are on eight points. Tinkler urges bravery as Sekhukhune chase MTN8 comeback

Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler calls on his players to be brave and focused as they chase an MTN8 semi-final comeback against Stellenbosch. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media Eric Tinkler wore a weary smile at the PSL offices on Thursday during the pre-match press conference ahead of Sekhukhune United's MTN8 semi-final second leg against Stellenbosch. The coach's expression reflected the exhaustion he has endured over the past three weeks due to mounting expectations. Babina Noko assembled a strong squad during pre-season, and there were high hopes for them to build on their fourth-place finish in last season's league campaign. They duly answered the call, beating TS Galaxy in the MTN8 quarter-final and Orlando Pirates in their Betway Premiership opener. 🚨 NEXT MATCH 🚨 We are going into the MTN8 Semi-Final 2nd Leg! 🆚 STELLENBOSCH 🏟 New Peter Mokaba Stadium 📅 Saturday, 23 Aug | 18:00 📺 SuperSport (202) & SABC 2 🎟 R100 | at OpenTickets: Be part of it. Tinkler lamented after that defeat that his troops had not followed instructions — an error they corrected by thrashing Orbit College 3-0 in the league on Wednesday night. Having endured a rollercoaster of results in recent weeks, Tinkler cut a stern and weary figure in Parktown. Despite the deficit and the possibility of missing out on one of their season targets, the ginger-haired coach insists they cannot throw in the towel just yet. 'I try to treat this game as the second half of the tie, and turn it around like we did against TS Galaxy,' Tinkler said, referencing their comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2. 'We obviously have to take more risks in attack, be braver on the ball, and more assertive going forward. But you mustn't be reckless. "You know they are going to hit you on the break and counter-attack. Your work ethic and concentration levels must be high. Most importantly, you need to stay positive, go out there, and try to get that early goal. A 2-1 lead is never a comfortable position.' Tinkler may still be chasing his first Wafa Wafa trophy with Sekhukhune, but he knows what it takes to win the competition, having lifted it with the now-defunct SuperSport United in 2017. He admitted he wants to create another milestone with Babina Noko, especially after the team has grown in leaps and bounds since he took charge earlier this year. 'I think it would be massive to reach a cup final,' Tinkler said. 'That's the target we set at the beginning of the season: to try and go all the way. 'Obviously, the players know the importance of turning the result around. For a club like Sekhukhune, winning a cup would add a piece of history to what the club has already achieved. 'Since I've been here, we've broken a number of records, and hopefully we can continue doing that. That's the objective.' Tinkler may be the chosen leader of Babina Noko, but he knows he needs the buy-in and contribution of everyone — especially the players — to succeed. 'I asked the players, 'What do you want? Do you want a coach-centred team or a player-centred team?'' Tinkler explained. 'I can be a dictator if you want me to be, or I can be a leader if that's what you prefer. So you must choose: dictator or leader. The players chose a leader. 'They've taken that ownership and created a culture within the team. For that reason, we see what we see right now: character, discipline, and unity within the squad.'

Luke Baartman made to wait for Kaizer Chiefs debut by Spurs

Newly-signed Kaizer Chiefs attacker Luke Baartman will have to wait a little longer for his official debut. Baartman was unveiled by Amakhosi on Tuesday night following the ruling by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) The PSL DRC on Monday ruled that Baartman was a free agent as Cape Town Spurs are now an amateur side. However, Spurs argued that Baartman still had an exisiting contract with them despite their relegation to the ABC Motsepe League. Now, according to iDiski Times , Spurs have taken the matter on appeal to the South African Football Association (SAFA). The Urban Warriors feel aggrieved by the ruling, and strongly believe that SAFA will interprete the rules differently. Nonetheless, this Baartman-Spurs saga is likely to have the same ending as that of Asanele Velebayi who was also declared a free agent by SAFA before joining Chiefs. Now, Chiefs will NOT be able to play Baartman until SAFA rules on the matter brought forward by Spurs. Luke Baartman will wear jersey No.11 at Kaizer Chiefs.
