Benjamin Sesko ‘ready to play' as Ruben Amorim plots Manchester United's return to European football
Slovenia's Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig last weekend for a transfer fee of 76.5 million euros ($89 million) with 8.5 million in bonuses. United have spent around 200 million pounds this summer after finishing 15th last season.
'We didn't have a lot of time but he is ready, physically he is ready, that is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart… he is ready to play, we will see if he is going to start,' Amorim told reporters on Friday.
Amorim said United, who last season had their worst finish in the English top-flight since 1973-74, will go into the 2025-26 campaign aiming for a return to European soccer.
'We cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better. We're training harder and are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game,' he said.
'We want to return to Europe. We have to be realistic with our fans. We will have to fight a lot because there are more teams with time together than us. We have to focus game by game. We want to win against Arsenal.'
Arsenal's new Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres is primed to make his Premier League debut against Manchester United, with manager Mikel Arteta predicting on Friday that the striker will have a 'tremendous impact' this season as the club chases silverware.
Arsenal splashed nearly 200 million pounds ($271.12 million) in a summer spending spree to land six new players including Gyokeres, who was hot property on the transfer market after netting 54 times in all competitions for Sporting last term.
Sesko had been on Arsenal's radar before moving to United and in a twist of transfer fate, the two clubs' new strikers are set to face off at Old Trafford when the age-old Premier League rivals play each other in a rare season opener.
'I can just talk about Viktor and how happy we are to have him. He is going to have a tremendous impact in the team and his adaptation has been really, really good and we are happy to have him,' Arteta told reporters.
'Many strikers have come from different leagues and been successful. It's on us, creating the right context for Viktor to do what he does best, which is to score goals.
'He is getting better and better every day. He is normally a really fit player and he has had the small moments in two (pre-season) games with us, so let's see what he brings on Sunday.'

Premier League 2025: Sunderland crush West Ham 3-0 in dream return; Dan Ballard shines on debut
Sunderland announced their Premier League return in emphatic style with a 3-0 win over West Ham, sending the Stadium of Light into raptures. After years of frustration in the lower leagues, the Black Cats looked sharp, organized, and clinical against a toothless Hammers side. This is Sunderland's first Premier League win since 2017(X/@SunderlandAFC) The breakthrough came on 61 minutes when Eliezer Mayenda met a superb Omar Alderete cross with a thunderous header to give Sunderland the lead, reported The Guardian. Dan Ballard, later named Player of the Match, doubled the advantage 12 minutes later with yet another commanding header before substitute Wilson Isidor wrapped things up in injury time. Dan Ballard shines like a star on debut For Ballard, the occasion was extra special. According to Sky Sports, he delivered a near-flawless defensive performance, and his headed goal sealed a clean-sheet victory on his Premier League debut. Speaking to Sky Sports, Ballard said it was the perfect start and added that he believes the team executed their game plan 'really well'. 'The new signings have added quality, but the spirit of this team is what got us promoted, and you saw that today,' he was quoted as saying. The numbers reflected his dominance: no player won more aerial duels (10) or made more clearances (eight). Sky Sports' Lewis Jones compared Ballard to 'Concorde' commanding the skies. Granit Xhaka's leadership and Habib Diarra's energy The Guardian report added that new captain Granit Xhaka marshalled the midfield with authority while Habib Diarra caused West Ham problems throughout with his pace and direct runs. Their composure in transition allowed Sunderland to nullify West Ham's possession game and strike decisively when chances arose. Manager Regis Le Bris, who was overseeing his first Premier League game, was full of praise. He was quoted in The Guardian that he is happy for the fans and that it was a strong performance against a tough side. Le Bris said, 'We just have to enjoy this moment.' In contrast to a rather dominating 64% possession, the side hardly created much, managing just a mere 0.63 expected goals out of 11 shots, the Sky Sports report stated. Potter was quoted as saying that the second half was not good enough, and the team did not perform the basics: defend their box. He said that although it was disappointing but they 'must improve quickly'. Reportedly, questions have begun arising on Potter's system, which seems to be throttling Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Pagueta, West Ham's two most creative outlets. Bereft of their trademark counter-attacking snap, the Hammers indeed looked blunt and frail. Match Stats Goals: Mayenda (61'), Ballard (73'), Isidor (90+2') Possession: Sunderland 36.8% – West Ham 63.2% Shots on Target: Sunderland 5 – West Ham 4 Corners: Sunderland 5 – West Ham 7 FAQs Q1: Who scored for Sunderland against West Ham? Haaland fires Man City to opening win at Wolves
Manchester City signalled their intent to take back the Premier League title as Erling Haaland struck twice in a 4-0 win at Wolves on Saturday to begin their campaign. HT Image After four consecutive titles, City finished a distant third last season as Pep Guardiola's men failed to win any trophy for the first time in eight years. New signings Tijjani Reijnders, who was the star of the show at Molineux, and Rayan Cherki were also on target to give Guardiola hope his side will be back in the title race this season. Guardiola made a bold call amid ongoing uncertainty over City's goalkeeping situation. James Trafford made his first senior appearance for the club after returning for a second spell at the Etihad from Burnley. Ederson was not in the travelling squad as he is reportedly close to a move to Galatasaray, which could see City pursue a deal for out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain 'keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Wolves are among the favourites to be relegated after losing talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Vitor Pereira's were ultimately well beaten, but the outcome could have been very different had they made the most of an uncertain City start. Marshall Munetsi powered a header into the bottom corner but was flagged offside. Instead, the game swung decisively in City's favour with two goals in three minutes, thanks to Reijnders creativity and goal threat from midfield. The £46.5 million ($63 million) signing from AC Milan jinked through the Wolves midfield before dinking a pass into Rico Lewis, who squared for Haaland to tap in at the back post. Moments later Oscar Bobb released Reijnders to arrow in a precise finish on his left foot. Trafford did not have many saves to make, but showed his ability with his feet to begin a flowing move for City's third. The England goalkeeper cushioned a long pass into Reijnders, who played a one-two with Bobb, before cutting the ball back for a clinical Haaland finish. Haaland was denied the chance to net a hat-trick as he was replaced by Cherki 17 minutes from time. The French international took just another eight minutes to make his mark by picking out the bottom corner from outside the box. Tougher tests of this new-look City are around the corner with Tottenham, Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester United in their next four league games. But the convincing nature of victory was more like the City of old, which will strike fear into their title rivals. kca/ea GALATASARAY SPORTIF
