Hulu's Best New Show Lands A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score
If you are currently working your way through your streaming services, trying to find something to watch, it turns out Hulu has a new series that's starting out reviewing especially strong.
That would be Dope Girls, the series that originally aired on the BBC, but has now made its way to Hulu, and it currently has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from a limited number of critics. While this may sound like some sort of modern day drug-dealing drama, it's the opposite. Rather, it chronicles a much different type of tale. Here's the synopsis:
If you think you recognize the actress who plays Kate, you are almost certainly right. That is Julianne Nicholson, and while you may not know her name, if you have watched Hulu's other big show this year, the now Emmy-nominated Paradise, you'll know her as the (mostly) villainous Sinatra, the force of power behind the entire city. And she also got an Emmy nomination for that role.
Nicholson is recognizable from a slew of projects. She's been in 13 movies and shows since 2020 alone, including The Outsider, Mare of Easttown, Blonde, The Amateur and Hacks, in addition to Paradise and Dope Girls. Dope Girls, however, is a rare chance where she's been given the opportunity to lead a production, and clearly that has gone well.

Dope Girls, the six-episode series, appears to be a one-and-done, based on a 1991 book, Dope Girls: The Birth of the British Drug Underground, written by Marek Kohn. Here's what some critics are saying about the series:
These are mostly UK outlets, so now that the show has made its way to Hulu, more reviews may start to come in, as might an audience score, as it doesn't have one of those yet.
As for Nicholson's main project, Paradise, that has been renewed for season 2 and is supposed to be out sometime in 2026. It was nominated for four Emmys: Best Drama, Best Lead Actor (Sterling K Brown), Best Supporting Actor (James Marsden) and Best Supporting Actress (Nicholson). I would be a little surprised if it won any of those, given how steep the competition is in the drama categories, but hey, this is a pretty big achievement for both a Hulu show and something in the post-apocalyptic genre. In spite of all that, Better Man is a remarkably confident, assured musical, a film about the perils of fame and stardom and the vices that go along with it. More than anything, Better Man is worth watching because of Williams' music, and director Michael Gracey brings it to life with a remarkable degree of vision. You can watch Better Man on Amazon Prime Video. Thief (1981) Michael Mann's debut feature is indicative of the style that he would bring to his entire career. The movie follows Frank (James Caan), a highly skilled professional thief who treats his work like a job. Frank wants to walk away after one big job, but when the person he works for won't let him go, he's forced to fight for his right to a quiet life. It's a familiar story brought to life by Mann, Tangerine Dream, and James Caan. Thief is a remarkably confident, tense first feature. It remains one of the best movies of the 1980s. Edinburgh Festival Fringe: 'I went to see an '80s TV icon and left after 20 minutes'
The British television icon, Bobby Davro, has returned for his second full length run at the Edinburgh Fringe. I was warned in advance about what to expect, however in an attempt at maintaining journalistic neutrality, I went into this experience with an open mind. I've always been of the persuasion that all art is inherently political… and I still do believe that, however what Bobby Davro does is not art at all, and it certainly isn't political - it's just rehearsing 90 minutes worth of the things reposted on Facebook by your uncle that no longer gets invited to Christmas. READ MORE: Edinburgh Fringe performer fights back tears as 'a third of her audience walk out' READ MORE: Edinburgh street remains locked down as police erect 'black tent' outside home The show opens with a satirical disclaimer poking fun at the 'woke' agenda, followed by a singalong of The Proclaimers' '500 Miles' where he encourages his audience to chant his name during the chorus - something I'm told he's been doing for a very long time, this got a good response. From the outset, Davro makes repeated gags about trans and queer people, the one receiving the best audience reaction being his intentional misspelling of LGBTQ+ … a joke I'm sure took him hours to come up with. Other jokes in the show featured such explosive comedy as 'I'm not racist, I've got a colour TV' as well as upon gesturing to an audience member, 'look, she laughed so much at that one she's got tears dribbling down her leg!'. Some of the women in the crowd appeared visibly disturbed and at times confused by the 'jokes' being told on stage and while at no point do I claim that I speak for women - I'm fairly comfortable saying that this show is not targeted towards a female audience… at all. This performance had no charm, substance or depth. The act would have been somewhat meta or reflective if it were written about 30 years ago and by the sound of the material itself, it was. Listen, Bobby Davro (Robert Christopher Nankeville) has the right to earn a living as much as anybody, unfortunately for him I just don't think the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the place to do that. In truth I left this show about 20 minutes in, I felt uncomfortable and cringed out for my entire time there. I'd like to offer my utmost apologies to Mr Davro if the part of the show I missed turned into the most profound, era defining comedy anyone's ever seen… but I sincerely doubt it.
