The Team Behind ‘Iron Saga VS' Talks About Their Love Of Super Robots

Forbes21-03-2025

'Iron Saga VS' owes its visual style to the 'Super Robot Wars' games.
What with Iron Saga VS finally released on Steam, I caught up with Renaud Cormier, Global Media Director at Game Duchy about the game.
If you remember, I played Iron Saga VS at last year's Tokyo Game Show and I was very impressed. Infusing the style and pathos of the Super Robot Wars games into a cogent 2D fighting game, Iron Saga VS definitely stood out.
The game is now finally released and in addition to an interesting roadmap of content over the coming year (shown below), I thought it worth digging more into the studio behind the game, something Renaud was very kind enough to oblige.
'Most members of Game Duchy are either mecha fans, fighting game fans, or both. After building technical experience with Iron Saga mobile, it made sense to move on to the next logical type of game, a fighting game. It's been a dream for a lot of us to finally see our favorite super robots in a modern, easy to get into yet competitive one-on-one fighting game. Alongside these classic anime mecha are our own Iron Saga originals, who introduce some unique fighting styles and weaponry, together, they create a solid roster where each design complements the next. The rising popularity of units like Kaguya and Qing Long during our open betas, alongside fan-favorite super robots like Getter Robo and Mazinger Z, has only reinforced our confidence in the beauty of this combination. This is what inspired our most recent splash artwork of Kaguya facing off against Getter 1, currently used as the main image in the Steam store.
'The design team has been significantly inspired by the Street Fighter series, particularly Street Fighter V. Many of Iron Saga VS's core mechanics reflect this influence, for example, things like the Flash Counter mixing Street Fighter V's Crush Counters and Street Fighter 6's Punish Counters, further customized with our own special twist, the Arsenal System. Each of our playable mecha has a set of 2 distinct, unique move lists primarily affecting which attacks are used with the 'D' button, somewhat akin to Street Fighter V's V-Skill and V-Trigger selection.

'We have also taken cues from various other games, including the King of Fighters and Guilty Gear series, for instance, their expanded combo freedom and air mobility. The final result is a fine-tuned assembly reminiscent of classic fighting series while still keeping our own unique identity. Visually, this identity is immediately clear: instead of boxing or using magical powers, our giant robot characters will be firing off missiles and rocket punches while boosting across the battlefield, brandishing laser swords.
This year's roadmap for 'Iron Saga VS' has a lot of impressive content.
'Our roster features a mix of popular mecha and pilots from the mobile game, alongside a few that we believed would bring a distinct, unique visual style and gameplay mechanics. For example, Nero and its pilot Slokai, the 7th pope of the Mechanical Vatican, are already highly popular among our mobile users. Meanwhile, the lesser-known Wu Shuang will truly shine in a fighting game with its Lu Bu-inspired weaponry and its own original 'pilot' created for the game: Yin, the computerized spirit of an ancient warrior. Story-wise, Iron Saga VS is a spinoff and splits from the narrative of Iron Saga mobile, so they should be considered as two alternate timelines.
'As mecha game fans, we've also been following the Super Robot Wars tactical role-playing games in many ways. Inspired by its fun animation style, we wanted to capture the same excitement while still ensuring we keep the body proportions of each mecha, such that the limbs are long enough for a fighting game's close combat animations. You can also see it communicated in the cut-ins of our Supermoves, where a zoomed-in, highly detailed version of the mecha will perform the awesome final attack. That said, this art style also integrates well with our bones-based animation style, further encouraging us towards this choice. The end result is a fun and vibrant mecha fighting game we hope still manages to carry on the classic legacy of super robots.
'We are also excited to share that we are past the planning phase for other platforms and have begun developing on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, iOS, and Xbox. We are also striving to provide cross-platform play as much as possible in order to let our players face their friends regardless of their preferred device. Additionally, our testing for the Steam Deck has been very positive, and we will work on obtaining certification shortly.'
The extra content on the way also looks great, especially the story mode and the addition of Zeorymer. The latter is a genuine beast in Super Robot Wars J, with its upgrade to Great Zeorymer being notably rather scary.
In any case, I'm just happy I can use Final Dancouga to punch other mecha in the face and that makes me very happy indeed.
Iron Saga VS is now available to play on PC via Steam.

Indian couple's extravagant wedding parade shuts down Wall Street — meet the bride and groom

It was a marriage made in Manhattan — and it brought Wall Street to a full stop. An extravagant Indian wedding parade, or baraat, turned the Financial District into a full-blown block party on Saturday, halting traffic and causing jaws to drop faster than a stock market crash. Hundreds of people, decked in glittering sarees, sequinned lehengas and gold-embellished finery, gathered outside Cipriani Wall Street to watch the happy couple arrive and grooved to a pulsating blend of Bollywood beats and pop bangers spun by a live DJ. 'We shut down Wall Street for a 400-person Baraat,' DJ AJ @djmumbai wrote alongside a clip of the epic moment. 'Who would've ever thought?!' 'Who are the bride and the groom? Must be billionaires,' one person commented. Turns out, the mystery newlyweds weren't Bollywood royalty — but they might as well be. Thanks to a plethora of social media posts tagging them, the duo was identified as Varun Navani, CEO of enterprise AI platform Rolai, and Amanda Soll, a director of legal compliance and risk management, per their LinkedIn pages. Their identities were confirmed by their wedding page on The Knot, which contained the details of their four-day wedding celebration. The high-powered pair hail from Boston, Mass., but decided to tie the knot in the city that never sleeps. The bride and groom didn't just break the internet — they broke the bank. According to city records viewed by The Post, the couple filed 28 permits for their big day, likely shelling out between $25,000 and $66,000 per location to shut down the Financial District. The Mayor's Office classifies street events — which take over curbs, sidewalks and roads — by size and impact, with 'large' events requiring a full block closure and extensive setup, and 'extra-large' events demanding even more space, permits and NYPD coordination. The baraat — a time-honored tradition in Hindu and Muslim South Asian weddings — is essentially a pre-ceremony procession where the groom's family and friends dance their way to the venue, often with dhol drums, music and more flair than a Broadway finale. Traditionally, the groom arrives on horseback, following rituals like his sister feeding daal-channa (lentils) to the steed and sisters-in-law applying kaala teeka (a black dot) to the back of his neck to ward off the evil eye. According to their Knot page, the lovefest kicked off Friday, May 23, with breakfast and afternoon tea at the Conrad hotel, followed by a lively sangeet — a pre-wedding bash full of music, dancing and revelry — at The Glasshouse. Saturday brought more breakfast, brunch and tea at the Conrad before the main event: the baraat at 3:30 p.m., followed by a lavish reception at Cipriani Wall Street that kept guests partying from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. For the baraat, Navani arrived in a traditional ivory long coat, or sherwani, and layered pearl necklaces and stunned onlookers, who captured the dazzling scene of hundreds dancing down the historic street. The groom was also seen riding in a white vehicle down the street at one point and clapped with a megawatt grin as his crew hoisted him into the air. Soll, the bride, stunned in a deep ruby lehenga by renowned Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, adorned with ornate gold embellishments and matching glimmering jewelry. Her brunette tresses swept into an elegant updo with soft face-framing tendrils. Her glam? A modern classic with kohl-rimmed, winged liner, glistening highlighter and rosy blush on her cheekbones and a minimal nude lip. Even the groomsmen brought the fashion heat in coordinated pink-and-white ethnic attire, setting a festive tone for the scene that had bystanders wondering if they'd stumbled onto a movie set. But wait — there's more. On Sunday, the pair hosted another round of breakfast and tea before exchanging vows again in an evening Jewish wedding at Cipriani and an after-party at Slate that lasted until 4 a.m. And on Monday, they wrapped it all up with one last post-wedding brunch and lunch send-off at the Conrad's West Ballroom before guests were bussed out of the Big Apple — likely in need of a vacation from the wedding. From boardrooms to baraats, these newlyweds made Wall Street dance to their own beat.

Steam Deck Gets Direct Access to GeForce Now With Dedicated App

Steam Deck owners with a subscription to Nvidia's GeForce Now no longer need a workaround to use the cloud gaming service. A new app just for Steam Deck gives users of the handheld gaming device the option to play games at the highest graphics settings without quickly draining its battery. Nvidia released its GeForce Now app for Steam Deck on Thursday, according to a blog post from the company. This app lets Steam Deck players enjoy their games at the max graphics settings with all the visual bells and whistles. If docked while connected to a TV, it can also output 4K at 60 frames per second. To download the app, Steam Deck owners must be in Desktop mode. From there, open a browser and head to the download page to get the installer. After double-clicking on the GeForceNowSetup program and selecting "Execute, " this will add GeForce Now to your Steam Library. After installation, users need to select "Return to Gaming Mode" from the desktop. The app will be available in the Non-Steam Games section of the Steam Library. The GeForce Now app allows users to play games at a higher graphics setting than the Steam Deck and allows for longer battery life while streaming. According to a report from The Verge, playing a game via GeForce Now resulted in seven to eight hours of gaming. This is a big upgrade from the typical two to three hours most would get with a game at the highest graphical settings. As with any streaming service, the big concern will be the internet connection speed available. Players will need to have a fast connection to play games with little lag. Nvidia does have servers across the US, but if someone is a bit too far away from the server and doesn't have fast internet, it's likely they will see some lag while playing. Now Playing: GeForce Now is good enough to addict you to cloud gaming 01:39 Nvidia's new app for Steam Deck is another step in the company's push to have GeForce Now on every smart device. It's currently available on phones, tablets, Windows and Apple computers, Xbox Series consoles, Switch OLED, the PS5, Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest Chromecast, Android TV and certain smart TVs from Sony, Samsung and LG. GeForce Now is available for free, but that tier is limited to one-hour sessions. The Performance tier offers six-hour sessions and short queue times for $10 monthly, while the Ultimate tier comes with eight-hour sessions, the shortest queue times and access to the highest graphics settings available. While GeForce Now does offer thousands of games to play, subscribers need to own the games from different platforms, such as Steam or the Epic Games Store, or they need to be subscribers to services such as Xbox Game Pass.
