19 urban health and wellness centres in Coimbatore await inauguration

Time of India5 hours ago

Coimbatore: As many as 19 urban health and wellness centres (UHWCs) in Coimbatore -- whose construction work has been completed and staff members have been recruited -- are awaiting inauguration.
The Coimbatore city municipal corporation has 32 urban primary health centres (UPHC). The Tamil Nadu govt has constructed 19 UHWCs in Coimbatore to enhance the health services in the city. They include those in Ganapathy Maa Nagar, Townhall, Olympus, Ondipudur, Rathinapuri, Selvapuram, Kovilmedu and Pappanaickenpalayam.
The state govt spent Rs 25 lakh for the construction of each centre, The construction work of the wellness centres was completed at least six months ago.
More than 70 people have joined various postings including doctors, staff nurses, health inspectors and housekeeping staff members, in the 19 centres.
"The state govt has completed the recruitment of staff members for the UHWCs. They include doctors, staff nurses and other cadres who will work on a contract basis. The centres will help the poor people. The centres were expected to be inaugurated by the chief minister M K Stalin last month, but it was postponed," said an official.

Commenting on this delay, N R Ravisankar, an activist in Cheran Maa Nagar, questioned the public health preparedness of the corporation. "Public health is very important. While there are high possibilities of monsoon infections like dengue and flu, the lack of these facilities forces the public to opt for private hospitals and clinics. Medical expenses in the private sector are not affordable, and many people fail to avail proper treatment.
If these facilities are open, people from all walks of life can get better healthcare at the earliest, that too free of cost." said Ravisankar.
A senior corporation official said, "The situation is the same across the state, with 208 centres awaiting inauguration."
Meanwhile, all the staff members recruited for these 19 centres are on duty at various urban primary health centres.
Stalin in 2022 announced the establishment of 708 urban health and wellness centres across Tamil Nadu, with 72 centres allocated to the Coimbatore district. Of this, 64 centres fall under the jurisdiction of the city corporation, of which 45 have been open to the public.

3 common foods that are secretly harming the liver

The liver is among the most critical organs of the body, responsible for detoxification, digestion, and metabolism. However, despite its toughness, the liver is more and more at risk from the latest trends in diet. Unexpectedly, it's not necessarily alcohol or fast food causing the harm, as most people imagine, but Recent health news and trending medical content, such as a reel from a top wellness expert, Palak Midha, based out of Dubai, identified three everyday foods that can be quietly destroying your liver without you even knowing. Here's a closer look at these undercover offenders: Fructose-laden and sugary food (The deadliest of all) From sugary drinks and candies to breakfast cereals and flavored yogurts, sweet foods have become dietary staples. Most of us believe that having cereal for breakfast is a healthy thing to do, but little did we know that it is one of our worst enemies and is hurting our bodies internally. Hidden beneath the sweetness is a dangerous threat. Much of the processed sugar, particularly high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), overwhelms the liver. Fructose is metabolized nearly entirely in the liver, in contrast to glucose, which cells all over the body utilize. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo In large quantities, the liver stores it as fat, causing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Numerous studies have associated high fructose consumption with inflammation of the liver, insulin resistance, and long-term injury. It's particularly deadly since the harm gets to quietly build up year after year before symptoms become apparent. The solution: Cut back on sweetened drinks, packaged foods, and sweets. Use whole fruits instead, which include fiber that delays sugar intake. Refined vegetable oils (Seed oils) Frequently marketed as "heart-healthy," oils such as soybean, corn, sunflower, and safflower oil are ubiquitous in processed foods, restaurant meals, and even home recipes. Individuals make mustard oil the culprit, while, the types of oils we consume daily, except mustard oil, are harmful to our health. These are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which in excess can throw the body's natural balance of omega-3 to omega-6 out of whack and stimulate inflammation. When cooked at high temperatures, these oils also release dangerous chemicals called aldehydes that are toxic to liver cells. With time, chronic exposure to these oils leads to oxidative stress and damage to the liver cells. The solution: Swap refined seed oils with health-friendly versions like cold-pressed olive oil, avocado oil, or ghee. When dining out, avoid deep-fried foods and highly processed foods. Fruit Juice—Even the 100% natural ones Fruit juice is usually seen as a healthier soft drink alternative, but the reality is different. Although it does not contain additives and preservatives, fruit juice is not fiber-rich, so its sugar becomes more destructive than fruit. For example, one glass of orange juice can have as much sugar as a soda. The liver metabolizes this abrupt influx of fructose in juice quickly, leading to fat buildup and metabolic strain. Regular consumption of juice can be particularly hazardous to individuals who are prediabetic or overweight. The solution: Enjoy whole fruits rather than juicing them. If you need to consume juice, water it down and make portion sizes tiny. The actual risk of these three foods—fructose-containing foods, seed oils that are highly refined, and fruit juices—is that they're thought to be normal or even healthy. However, with time, they can lead to liver dysfunction in people who don't drink alcohol or have existing liver disorders. The good news? The liver is incredibly regenerative. By making educated eating changes now, you can reverse early damage and improve long-term health. Focus on whole foods, healthy fats, and low-sugar options, and your liver will reward you quietly but immensely. This article is informational only and not a substitute for medical advice. 9-year-old dies after undergoing anesthesia for a dental procedure: What went wrong?

Representational image In a tragic case, a nine year old girl has died after undergoing anesthesia. She was supposed to have a dental procedure. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office, Silvanna Moreno, "underwent dental surgery under anesthesia in Vista and transitioned to a recovery room afterwards. She was later discharged from the facility. She fell asleep during her ride home. Upon arrival, she stayed sleeping and was transitioned into her bed at home. Family checked on her throughout the day to later find her unresponsive in bed and called 911 for emergency services assistance. Responding paramedics contacted the decedent and provided lifesaving measures while transporting her to the Rady Children's Hospital Emergency Department. Upon her arrival, medical staff assumed the provision of lifesaving measures to no avail with death being pronounced." She died on March 18. The report mentions her cause of death to be "Methemoglobinemia in the setting of recent nitrous oxide administration." What is Methemoglobinemia? Methemoglobinemia is a rare but serious blood disorder where your red blood cells can't carry oxygen. Normally, hemoglobin works like a delivery agent, bringing oxygen to all the tissues in your body. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo But when someone has methemoglobinemia, a form of hemoglobin called methemoglobin starts to build up. This version can't carry oxygen like it's supposed to. It's like your oxygen delivery system broke down halfway through the job. Now here's where it gets tricky: this condition can be genetic (you're born with it), or it can happen because of exposure to certain drugs, chemicals, or even foods high in nitrates (like well water or too much spinach in babies). People with methemoglobinemia might look blue or gray-ish (a condition called cyanosis), feel short of breath, dizzy, or super tired all the time. In severe cases, it can cause seizures or even death if left untreated. Yes, anesthesia can sometimes cause methemoglobinemia, especially certain types of local anesthetics like benzocaine, prilocaine, or even lidocaine in high doses. These drugs can trigger the formation of methemoglobin in the blood, making it harder for red blood cells to carry oxygen. This risk is higher in babies, people with genetic susceptibility, or those getting large doses during surgery or dental work. Symptoms might show up shortly after exposure—like bluish skin, shortness of breath, or fatigue. She was administered anesthesia by Dr. Ryan Watkins. "The patient was referred to our office for dental treatment under general anesthesia due to her young age and acute situational anxiety," he told PEOPLE. "Throughout the procedure, she was continuously monitored by our dentist anesthesiologist ... with no complications observed." New reports say Dr Watkins had faced disciplinary action before.
