ASEAN gains major respect on international stage
Citing his recent engagements with global leaders in Brazil, Italy and France, he said that, without exception, each bilateral session with Malaysia involved discussions about ASEAN — clear testament to the grouping's rising stature on the world stage.
'Everyone had recognised the role of ASEAN. ASEAN has now achieved a spectacular position, (gaining) major respect and international recognition. I thank you all, particularly the foreign ministers,' he said in his opening remarks at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings here Wednesday.
The Prime Minister said the ten member countries have done relatively well, reiterating the strong level of trust and confidence among them.
Anwar described ASEAN's strength as a guarantee of peace and economic growth, stressing that unity must be preserved to protect the interests of the region's more than 600 million citizens.
'ASEAN's strength is a guarantee of security; ASEAN's strength is also a guarantee of economic growth, and this strength is expected to safeguard the interests of the ASEAN people as a whole,' he said.
Anwar noted that even in addressing challenges such as the Myanmar crisis and the Five-Point Consensus, ASEAN leaders have shown a consistent spirit of engagement, support and understanding.
He said ASEAN had engaged with Myanmar's junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and National Unity Government (NUG) leader Mahn Win Khaing Than, and added that 'we were able to proceed with the support and confidence shown by all leaders'.
On the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, he said ASEAN responded swiftly and collectively, driven by a shared commitment to peace and stability.
'We had no hesitation at all to immediately call our colleagues in both countries to express our concern and support all intended initiatives to secure a lasting peace,' he shared.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that there are some areas where ASEAN could improve, such as in intra-ASEAN trade and joint investments.
Anwar also expressed gratitude to senior ASEAN leaders past and present, as well as to the foreign ministers, for helping build a foundation of trust that continues to drive ASEAN forward.
The ongoing 58th AMM and related meetings are being held under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025 with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.

PM: Tokenisation and digital assets must benefit all
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will continue to ensure that the implementation of tokenisation and digital assets is inclusive, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a post on X last night, the Prime Minister said the implementation would also deliver broad benefits to the people and be strictly regulated to ensure the safety and stability of the country's digital ecosystem. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, chaired the second Digital Assets and Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council meeting of the year today, which focused on the future of digital assets in Malaysia's capital market. "Among the main agenda items discussed were developments in blockchain technology, tokenisation, post-quantum cryptography, and the launch of the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure (MBI), which is a key driver of the nation's digital ecosystem." "This meeting also served as a platform to exchange views on global market trends, the potential of digital assets, and future performance expectations based on technical perspectives from strategic partners," he added. On May 6, the Malaysian Securities Commission issued a consultation paper to gather public feedback on the proposed framework for tokenised capital market products. The paper seeks input on key areas including governance controls, record-keeping and registration requirements, technology risk management, and additional requirements for licensed individuals dealing with tokenised capital market products.– BERNAMA

Anwar: Fatwa institutions must act collectively, guided by experts
KUALA LUMPUR: Fatwa institutions must operate collectively and ensure that any religious edict is based on information gathering and in-depth analysis by qualified experts, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post last night, Anwar said the matter was among those discussed during his meeting with the Penang State Fatwa Committee, led by Penang Mufti Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Sukki Othman. "The responsibility of issuing fatwas is a noble and vital duty in providing clarity on religious rulings for the understanding of the ummah. The ummah needs fatwas that are in line with local realities and the current era, in addition to developing new skills in dealing with contemporary issues and challenges for the benefit of society," he said. In the same post, Anwar said he and members of the Penang State Fatwa Committee also exchanged views on the development of Islamic scholarship, particularly in matters related to fiqh, maqasid syariah, and efforts to strengthen fatwa-related research. - BERNAMA

Chinese chambers of commerce welcomes govt's measures to ease cost of living
KUALA LUMPUR: The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) has welcomed the government's newly announced measures aimed at easing the cost of living and boosting consumer spending. "These measures would help to ease the cost of living and spur household consumption expenditure," ACCCIM said in a statement. Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made a highly anticipated announcement, which he described as an 'extraordinary tribute' to Malaysians. The measures include a one-off RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above, the freezing of toll hikes on 10 highways, and continued Rahmah Madani sales. The government also announced that the RON95 petrol price will be reduced to RM1.99 per litre when targeted subsidies begin this September. In addition, Sept 15 has been declared a public holiday for Malaysia Day celebrations. The association said that the fuel price drop would benefit around 18 million car and motorcycle users, pending further details on the eligibility criteria. ACCCIM expressed hope that the targeted subsidy mechanism would be easy to implement to ensure a smooth rollout. Looking ahead, ACCCIM said it was looking forward to the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) on July 31 and the 2026 Budget on Oct 10, with a focus on sustaining economic resilience and development continuity. The chamber urged the government to avoid new tax measures or policies that could further burden businesses, which are already grappling with rising costs.
