Pilots have this tiny detail on their uniform that you probably never noticed — here's what it's for

New York Post20-05-2025
A pilot revealed the big meaning behind a small detail on their uniform.
While flight attendants have their own designated uniforms, obviously so do pilots.
And if you've ever taken a good look at a pilot when boarding a flight, you may have noticed that some of them have small gold stripes on their white-collared shirts — and there's a good reason for that.
An Emirates pilot explained in a TikTok video posted by the airline that a pilot's epaulettes, or sometimes referred to as shoulder boards, indicate their rank.
'One bar is for a training pilot, two bars are for a first officer, three bars are for senior first officers and four bars are for captains, like me,' the proud Emirates aircrew explained.
One of the commenters on the video said, 'Airlines mostly have slightly different rules regarding this.' And there is some truth to that.
According to the flight training center, AeroGuard, 'Depending on the airline, two, three or four stripes are shown on a pilots' shoulders.'
'A flight engineer or second officer wears two stripes, a first officer wears three stripes on their pilot uniform and a captain normally wears four,' as explained on their site — which differs from Emirates' pilot rankings.
When it comes to those in charge of flying planes — people are not only checking out their uniforms, they're also flirting with them.
A 25-year-old woman named Tanya Pidgorodetskiy shared her chance encounter with a handsome pilot while she was flying home to Cleveland with her family in a series of TikTok videos.
'Every time I tell the story, people think I'm making it up,' Pidgorodetskiy captioned one of her clips.
The pilot caught Pidgorodetskiy's attention when she was waiting to board a Frontier flight. She originally thought the good-looking stranger was going to be flying the flight she was soon getting on — but it turned out he was off-duty in uniform, flying as a passenger like everyone else.
The two didn't interact on the flight but he did leave a sweet note when it was time to deplane.
'I was sitting in a row towards the back, and 20 minutes before landing, I got a tap on my shoulder, and it's that guy, and he handed me a napkin, and I was just so confused,' Pidgorodetskiy said in her video. 'I made my mom and my sister read it first. I was freaking out.'
'Hi, I'm sure you get notes like this all the time, but I would love to take you out to dinner and get to know you. If that's something you'd be up for, let me know,' the sweet note from the pilot read.
And long story short — the two lovebirds have been dating ever since.

ATP partners with TikTok to capitalize on the rise of behind-the-scenes content

NEW YORK (AP) — The newest popular influencer on TikTok's 'For You" page might be the scroller's favorite tennis player. At least, the ATP hopes so. The governing body of men's professional tennis announced Tuesday it will be partnering with TikTok to further develop tennis content and bolster engagement on the platform. The partnership is two-fold. One of its stated goals is player engagement, aimed at helping more ATP players build up followings on the platform and give tennis fans 'exclusive behind-the-scenes' access to the sport, according to a press release. Its other goal is the creation of the 'Tennis Creator Network,' an initiative that will help existing non-athlete creators create TikTok content at ATP tour events. 'This strategic content partnership with TikTok builds on current trends with our audiences, places ATP at the forefront of the intersection of culture and sport, and creates discoverable content that cuts through for both players and tournaments,' Andrew Walker, senior vice president of brand and marketing for the ATP, said in the release. Currently, only 20 of the ATP's top 100 players have a presence on TikTok. Some of those 20 have become verifiable stars on the platform — Carlos Alcaraz has 1.1 million followers, Novak Djokovic has 666,000 and Ben Shelton has 448,000, to look at the upper echelon. They share everything from behind-the-scenes looks at tournaments to clips of them mowing the lawn and learning calligraphy. The ATP TikTok account itself has nearly 600,000 followers. The partnership is an acknowledgement of a blazing trend in sports media — candid, behind-the-scenes content created by athletes. Its popularity and virality is on the rise, manifesting itself everywhere from TikTok accounts to podcast studios. In July, a pair of Minnesota Lynx players — Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, nicknamed 'The Studbudz' — amassed hundreds of thousands of views and followers after live streaming the entirety of WNBA All-Star weekend, parties and all. The duo have now turned the momentum into official merchandise and newfound stardom. Athlete-hosted podcasts, with an hour of casual conversation from star athletes, have also repeatedly become headline makers. 'New Heights' with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is an obvious one, but shows like Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham's 'Show me something' have spiked similar engagement as their hosts offer candid insight into life beyond the game. The ATP is looking to tap into that surge in behind-the-scenes content with this partnership. '(It) encourages more players to share their stories," said TikTok's head of global sports partnerships, Rollo Goldstaub, in the release, "further igniting tennis' cultural movement on TikTok.' ___ AP tennis: Alyce Brown, The Associated Press Sign in to access your portfolio

How Kaylee Gonclaves' Brother Found Love After Sister's Murder

Originally appeared on E! Online Steven Goncalves is leaning on someone special. Nearly one month after Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of Kaylee Goncalves and her three friends, her brother shared that he and Olivia Vitale—the reporter he met during the investigation—are now engaged. "I interviewed Steven's family," Olivia detailed to NewsNation's Banfield Aug. 18. "This was when Bryan was still not arrested yet." The independent journalist noted that Steve Goncalves—Steven and Kaylee's dad—and his wife Kristi Goncalves learned about her TikTok, which has amassed over 1.3 million followers, through their daughter and reached out to her through email. "Several days before she had passed, she had sent my page to Kristi and was talking about it," Olivia explained. "So they wanted to reach out and do a documentary with me." However, she didn't meet Steven until a year later while she was filming the demolition of the house on King Road, where Kaylee, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin had been murdered. "But we didn't start dating until almost even a year after that. We were friends first, and then I invited him to—I was filming a documentary with NBC—and I wanted Steven to be a part of it, and it was on set where we bonded." It was this January, while filming the project, that the documentarian and Steven got to know each other. "We were skipping rocks," she recalled. "That was really when we first really met, and we just became best friends after that. And it's history." For Steven, his relationship has been the silver lining of their family's tragic few years. "There is a bright spot," he told host Brian Entin. "I did meet Olivia. I do have my partner for the rest of my life and I'll hold on to that." As for what their future looks like? While Olivia is still interested in sharing compelling stories to help other families, she and Steven have been interested in putting down roots. "Eventually, we would like to homestead, get some chickens, raise a family together," she explained. "I probably won't have as much time to be on the road and I'll be more working for home. But we'll do some stories together and help other families, 'cause that's what it really boils down—helping other people and giving them a voice."
